Chapter 15 - THE FALL

He raised the gun again. Straight toward me.
“Your father-in-law’s orders,” he said. “No survivors. Clean and quiet.”
I grabbed a heavy metal pipe from the floor and threw it—not at him, but at the high window above his head. Glass shattered. Sirens blared in the distance—loud, approaching, impossible to ignore. Elena had not failed. She had been delayed, but she had come.
The attorney flinched at the noise. In that split second, I lunged, knocking the gun aside. We struggled. He was older, weaker than he looked. I wrenched the weapon from his grip and sent him sprawling. Sirens screamed louder. Blue and red lights began flashing through the broken windows.
He scrambled backward, eyes wide, realizing he had run out of time.
“Robert Sterling will not stop,” he spat. “He will find that boy. He will make him his own. Blood is all that matters to him. Even if he has to kill everyone in his way.”
Police burst through the doors. Guns drawn. Shouts echoing. They seized the attorney. They rushed to Vanessa. Paramedics checked her pulse. One of them stood up slowly, shaking his head. She was gone.
I walked to Olivia. Cut her free. She collapsed into my arms, sobbing, trembling.
“She… she knew,” Olivia whispered. “She knew Father would kill her. That is why she sent for me. That is why she tried to make a deal. She was terrified of him. At the very end… she was trying to save me.”
It took hours to give statements. To answer every question. To watch them carry Vanessa out beneath a white sheet. Robert Sterling’s attorney sat in the back of a police car, silent and stone-faced. He would not speak. Not to me. Not to detectives. He had taken an oath, and he intended to keep it—even if it meant spending the rest of his life in prison.
Elena found me sitting on the back of an ambulance, staring blankly at the ground. She handed me a phone.
“Bad news,” she said quietly. “Robert Sterling is gone. He boarded a private plane ninety minutes ago. Destination unknown. He drained his accounts. Liquidated assets. Vanished completely.”
“And Noah?” I said, my voice cracking.
“He is safe. With my best people. But Adrian… this is not over. As long as Robert Sterling is free… Noah is not safe. That man believes his legacy has been stolen. He believes Noah carries his family’s blood. He will hunt him. For years. For as long as he lives.”
I thought of what Vanessa had said in her final moments. He wanted Noah. Not to love him. To control him. To mold him into the heir he thought his own daughter had failed to become.

I stood up. My legs felt weak, but my resolve was harder than ever.
“Then we will be ready,” I said. “We will move. We will change our names. We will build a life where he can never find us. And if Robert Sterling ever comes for my son… he will find that I am not the same man he tried to destroy.”
