Chapter 9: The Final Piece
For a moment, nobody moved.
The silence was unbearable.
Daniel’s words hung in the air.
Your father.
I looked at Richard.
My father.
The man standing beside me.
The man I had spent my entire life believing was my protector.
“Say something,” I whispered.
My father didn’t.
That scared me more than Daniel’s accusation.
Daniel smiled.
“There it is.””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
“That look.””
He stepped closer.
“The look everyone gets when they realize the person they trusted was never who they thought.””
“Shut up.””
His smile disappeared.
“Ask him.””
I looked at my father.
“Is it true?””
My father’s silence lasted too long.
Then he said:
“No.””
Relief came for half a second.
Then he continued.
“But there is something you need to know.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Another secret.
“What?””
My father looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“I found out Daniel was working with Victor years ago.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you still let him live?””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“I needed proof.””
Daniel laughed.
“You always needed proof.””
My father stepped forward.
“And you always thought you were smarter than everyone else.””
I looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Daniel pointed at the flash drive in my hand.
“That contains the truth.””
My fingers tightened around it.
“What truth?””
Daniel smiled.
“The truth about who really killed your mother.””
My father went pale.
I noticed.
And Daniel noticed that I noticed.
“Interesting, isn’t it?””
Daniel whispered.
“Your father doesn’t want you to hear it.””
I looked at my father.
“Open it.””
“Emily—”
“Open it.””
My father closed his eyes.
Then nodded.
We plugged the drive into Daniel’s computer.
A single audio file appeared.
Created twelve years earlier.
My hands shook as I pressed play.
Static.
Then voices.
My mother.
And another man.
Victor Hale.
“You promised this would stay hidden.””
Victor’s voice answered.
“It will.””
My mother sounded angry.
“You’re destroying everything we built.””
“No.””
Victor replied.
“I’m taking what should have always been mine.””
Then another voice.
A younger voice.
A voice I recognized.
My father.
“I’m not letting you do this.””
My breath stopped.
The recording continued.
“You think you can scare me, Richard?””
Victor laughed.
“You’re too weak.””
Then my father said something that changed everything.
“You don’t know what I’m willing to do to protect my family.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel looked at me.
“There.””
He whispered.
“Your father threatened Victor.””
I looked at my father.
“Did you kill him?””
My father looked devastated.
“No.””
Daniel laughed.
“Of course he says no.””
My father stepped toward me.
“Emily, listen to me.””
I wanted to.
I wanted to believe him.
But after a lifetime of secrets, trust was not something I could simply hand back.
Then another sound came.
A slow clap.
From the doorway.
We all turned.
A man stood there.
Older.
Elegant.
Smiling.
Victor Hale.
“Beautiful.””
His voice echoed through the office.
“I always wondered when this family reunion would happen.””
My father’s expression changed.
“You.””
Victor smiled.
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“You’re alive.””
“Very much.””
Daniel looked confused.
“You told me he was gone.””
Victor ignored him.
His eyes stayed on me.
“You have your mother’s eyes.””
I felt cold.
“You killed her.””
Victor smiled slightly.
“No.””
He looked at my father.
“He did.””
My father stepped forward.
“That’s a lie.””
Victor laughed.
“Is it?””
He pulled out a document.
“I think Emily deserves the truth.””
I looked at the paper.
My name was printed on it.
An inheritance transfer.
Signed.
But the signature wasn’t mine.
My blood ran cold.
“What is that?””
Victor smiled.
“The agreement that proves your father planned everything.””
I stared.
My father.
Daniel.
Victor.
The lies had become too tangled.
Then Victor said:
“Your father didn’t hide you from danger, Emily.””
He stepped closer.
“He created it.””
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message appeared.
From Dr. Harris.
One sentence.
*Emily, I found the missing medical records. The person who changed your diagnosis was not Daniel.*
I looked at the screen.
Then at my father.
Then at Victor.
And I realized something.
Everyone had been fighting over the same thing.
The same secret.
The same evidence.
But nobody knew the truth.
May you like
Because the person who started everything…
Was still hiding.
