Chapter 6: The Inheritance War
I didn’t sleep.
Not because of the illness.
Not because of Daniel.
Because of one sentence.
Your mother’s death wasn’t an accident.
My father had protected me from so many things.
But now I wondered what else he had hidden.
When he arrived the next morning, I didn’t hug him.
I didn’t smile.
I simply asked:
“Tell me everything.””
He sat down slowly.
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Yes.””
My voice cracked.
“You should have.””
He looked down.
“I thought protecting you meant keeping you away from the truth.””
“And now?””
“Now I understand that secrets can become weapons.””
I looked at him.
“What happened to Mom?””
My father took a deep breath.
“Your mother discovered someone was stealing from the company.””
“Who?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me.
“Someone close.””
My mind raced.
“Who?””
My father looked at me.
“Your grandfather’s business partner.””
I frowned.
“My grandfather?””
He nodded.
“There was a disagreement over ownership. Your mother found documents proving money was being moved illegally.””
“And she died because of that?””
My father’s silence answered.
I felt sick.
All my life, I believed I lost my mother because of an accident.
Because of bad luck.
Because life was unfair.
But someone had chosen it.
My father continued.
“After she died, I disappeared because I knew they would come after you next.””
I looked at him.
“And Daniel?””
My father’s face hardened.
“Daniel is connected.””
The room felt colder.
“How?””
“His father worked with the same people.””
I closed my eyes.
The pieces started connecting.
Daniel hadn’t found me by accident.
He had known.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
My quiet life.
My inherited house.
My fake ordinary identity.
It had all been a lie.
A knock interrupted us.
Dr. Harris entered.
“Emily.””
I looked at him.
“More bad news?””
He gave a small, sad smile.
“Actually, the opposite.””
I waited.
“Your condition is improving.””
I stared.
“What?””
He placed new results on the table.
“The substance in your system was causing severe damage. Since we removed the medication and started treatment, your heart has responded.””
I looked at my father.
Dr. Harris continued.
“You were never dying naturally.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
Relief.
Anger.
Shock.
Everything at once.
“So Daniel…”
“Yes,” Dr. Harris said quietly.
“Someone was trying to make you believe you were dying.””
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
They had planned a funeral for a woman who wasn’t dying.
They had prepared a future without me.
And now they had no idea I was standing back up.
That afternoon, I made one decision.
I would stop hiding.
Daniel came that evening.
But this time, I wasn’t lying in bed pretending to be defeated.
I was sitting upright.
Waiting.
He noticed immediately.
“You look better.””
“I feel better.””
His smile faded slightly.
“That’s good.””
“Is it?””
He looked confused.
“What?””
I watched him carefully.
“You seemed so prepared for me to be gone.””
His face hardened.
“Emily.””
“No.””
I stood slowly.
“I think we’ve spent enough time pretending.””
Daniel stared at me.
“What are you talking about?””
I walked toward the table.
On it was a copy of the medication report.
I watched his eyes move.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
“You recognize it?””
He looked away.
“No.””
“Liar.””
His expression changed.
For the first time, Daniel looked afraid.
“What did you say?””
I smiled.
“Nothing.””
Because I wasn’t ready.
Not yet.
I wanted him comfortable.
I wanted him confident.
I wanted him to believe he still had control.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You’re acting strange.””
“Maybe I’m finally seeing clearly.””
He stared at me.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Jennifer.
He rejected the call.
Too quickly.
Interesting.
I noticed.
He noticed me noticing.
“What?””
“Nothing.””
He grabbed his jacket.
“I have to go.””
“Daniel?””
He stopped.
“When you planned my death…”
His face went pale.
I continued:
“Did you ever wonder what would happen if I survived?””
He didn’t answer.
He walked out.
The second the door closed, my father’s phone rang.
He answered.
Then his expression changed.
“What happened?””
He listened.
Then looked at me.
“Emily…”
“What?””
He lowered the phone.
“Jennifer just confessed something.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did she say?””
My father stared at me.
“She wasn’t Daniel’s mistress.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She was working with him.””
I waited.
“On what?””
My father’s voice became quiet.
“She was hired to make sure you died.””
The room went silent.
Then he added:
“But she also said there was someone above Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
My father hesitated.
Then he showed me the message Jennifer had sent.
One name appeared on the screen.
A name I never expected.
A name that belonged to someone who should have been on my side.
May you like
*Richard Carter.*
My father.
