Chapter 8: The Night Everything Changed

I didn’t go home.

I went back to the hospital.

Not because I needed treatment.

Because I needed answers.

My father was waiting in my room.

He knew immediately.

“What did Daniel tell you?””

I stared at him.

“He told me to ask what happened the night Mom died.””

My father became completely still.

That reaction told me everything.

“You know what he’s talking about.””

He sat down.

“Yes.””

My voice shook.

“Tell me.””

He looked at his hands.

“The night your mother died…”

I waited.

“She wasn’t alone.””

The words made my stomach twist.

“Who was there?””

My father looked at me.

“I was.””

The room went silent.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I stepped back.

“Stop saying that.””

My father looked hurt.

But I continued.

“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””

My voice cracked.

“But nobody tells me anything.””

He nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

The honesty surprised me.

My father continued.

“Your mother discovered Victor Hale was planning to take control of the company.””

“By stealing?””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel’s family helped him?””

“Yes.””

I listened.

But something still didn’t make sense.

“What happened that night?””

My father closed his eyes.

“Your mother called me.””

A pause.

“She said she had proof.””

“What proof?””

“A recording.””

“Of who?””

“Victor.””

I leaned closer.

“What did it prove?””

My father’s voice became quiet.

“That he ordered Daniel’s father to arrange an accident.””

I stopped.

“An accident?””

My father nodded.

“The crash that killed your mother.””

The world seemed to tilt.

“She was murdered.””

“Yes.””

I covered my mouth.

For years.

I had cried over a tragedy.

But it had never been a tragedy.

It had been a decision.

My father continued.

“I arrived too late.””

“What happened to the recording?””

He looked away.

“It disappeared.””

I stared.

“Someone took it.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

My father didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

I knew.

Victor Hale.

But then another thought came.

“Why did Daniel tell me to ask you?””

My father looked at me.

“Because he wants you to believe I failed your mother.””

“Did you?””

The question hurt both of us.

My father whispered:

“Yes.””

I froze.

“I failed her because I trusted the wrong people.””

His eyes filled.

“But I never betrayed her.””

I didn’t know what to say.

For the first time, I saw my father differently.

Not as a powerful businessman.

Not as someone who could solve everything.

As a man who had lost his wife and spent years carrying the blame.

Then the hospital lights flickered.

A second later, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A voice whispered:

“Emily?””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

“Jennifer?””

Silence.

Then:

“You need to listen carefully.””

I stood.

“Where are you?””

“Somewhere Daniel can’t find me.””

“What happened?””

Her breathing was uneven.

“He knows you’re not dying.””

My father and I looked at each other.

“When did he find out?””

“Today.””

My stomach tightened.

“What is he planning?””

Jennifer hesitated.

Then whispered:

“He’s going to destroy the evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“The evidence that proves everything.””

“Where?””

She took a breath.

“His office.””

I grabbed my coat.

My father stopped me.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

“This may be a trap.””

“Maybe.””

“But?””

I looked toward the door.

“Maybe it isn’t.””

Daniel’s office was almost empty when we arrived.

Too empty.

The lights were off.

The building felt abandoned.

My father checked his phone.

“Security cameras are down.””

“Convenient.””

We entered quietly.

Daniel’s office was exactly what I expected.

Perfect.

Clean.

Controlled.

But there was something different.

Desperation.

Drawers were open.

Files were missing.

He was already cleaning up.

I searched the desk.

Nothing.

Then my father noticed the painting.

“Emily.””

I looked over.

He removed the frame from the wall.

Behind it was a small safe.

My heart raced.

“How did you know?””

My father didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

This was Daniel’s secret place.

Inside the safe was a folder.

And one flash drive.

I grabbed it.

Then a voice came from behind us.

“You really are your mother’s daughter.””

We turned.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Calm.

That scared me.

“You found it,” he said.

My father stepped forward.

“What did you do, Daniel?””

Daniel smiled.

“What I was told to do.””

I stared.

“By who?””

He looked at me.

May you like

And said the name that made my blood freeze.

“Your father.””
