Chapter 9: The Man Robert Trusted
The flashlight slipped slightly in my hand.
Because the voice coming from the basement belonged to someone who should not have been there.
Someone I believed was gone.
“Margaret.””
The voice came again.
Older.
Weaker.
But familiar.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who is that?””
The figure slowly moved into the light.
And my heart stopped.
“Eleanor?””
My attorney stood at the bottom of the stairs.
Her face was pale.
Her clothes were covered in dirt.
“What are you doing here?””
She looked at both of us.
Then at the open door behind her.
“I came because I found something.””
I stared.
“You scared us half to death.””
“I know.””
She looked shaken.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel helped her up the stairs.
“What happened?””
Eleanor looked at him.
Then at me.
“I found the ledger.””
My entire body went still.
“The ledger?””
She nodded.
“Robert’s ledger.””
She reached into her bag and pulled out an old leather notebook.
The cover was damaged.
The pages yellowed.
But the handwriting was unmistakable.
Robert’s.
I touched it carefully.
“Where did you find this?””
“In my office.””
I frowned.
“Your office?””
“Yes.””
“That makes no sense.””
Eleanor looked uncomfortable.
“It was hidden there.””
“By who?””
She didn’t answer.
That worried me.
“Eleanor.””
She took a breath.
“By Robert.””
Silence.
My husband had hidden something in my attorney’s office?
Why?
“Why would Robert hide this from me?””
Eleanor looked at the ledger.
“Because he believed someone close to him could be pressured.””
My eyes moved to Daniel.
He noticed.
“Mom.””
“I’m not accusing you.””
But the words sounded weak.
Because after everything, trust had become complicated.
Eleanor opened the ledger.
Inside were dates.
Names.
Payments.
Meetings.
Then she stopped.
“Here.””
She pointed.
I looked.
The page showed records from thirty years earlier.
Richard Collins.
Robert Bennett.
A third name.
I recognized it.
“Who is that?””
Eleanor looked at me.
“That’s the person who started everything.””
I read the name.
*Thomas Whitmore.*
“Who is he?””
“Your husband’s business partner before Richard.””
“Before Richard?””
“Yes.””
Eleanor turned the page.
“Thomas owned the original company. Robert and Richard worked for him.””
“And then?””
“Then Thomas discovered Richard was moving company funds.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“So Richard stole from him?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Eleanor looked serious.
“Thomas disappeared.””
The room went silent.
“Disappeared?””
“Yes.””
“Like…?””
“Like nobody ever found him.””
I felt a chill.
“What does that have to do with my land?””
Eleanor pointed at another page.
“This.””
I read the note.
The property.
The company.
The ownership dispute.
Then I saw it.
A signature.
Robert’s.
“He was protecting the land because of Thomas.””
Eleanor nodded.
“Your husband believed Thomas left evidence there.””
“Evidence of what?””
“Everything Richard did.””
Daniel looked horrified.
“So Richard isn’t trying to get the land.””
“No.””
Eleanor closed the ledger.
“He’s trying to erase what’s buried there.””
I thought about Richard’s confidence.
His warnings.
His certainty.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
He wasn’t chasing wealth.
He was chasing silence.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Who is it?””
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel?””
He showed me.
The caller ID said:
*Tiffany Collins.*
He answered.
“Tiffany?””
At first, there was only breathing.
Then her voice.
Quiet.
Terrified.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“Where are you?””
“No time.””
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then:
“Your father’s property isn’t the only thing Richard wants.””
Daniel looked at me.
“What do you mean?””
Her voice cracked.
“He wants the evidence gone.””
“We know.””
“No.””
She sounded desperate.
“You don’t understand.””
“What don’t we understand?””
A long silence.
Then she whispered:
“He knows about the basement.””
My blood froze.
“How?””
“He found the old plans.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What plans?””
“The original farmhouse plans.””
I looked toward the basement.
The basement where Eleanor had appeared.
The basement that held secrets my husband buried.
Tiffany continued.
“Margaret…”
“Yes?””
“You need to leave.””
“Why?””
Her voice dropped.
“Because Richard isn’t coming for the documents.””
The lights suddenly flickered.
Everyone froze.
Then Tiffany said the words that made my heart stop.
“He’s coming for the person who knows where they are.””
The call ended.
At that exact moment, a car door slammed outside.
Daniel turned toward the window.
His face went pale.
“Mom.””
I looked.
A black SUV sat at the edge of the property.
The same one from earlier.
Eleanor whispered:
“He found us.””
Then the front door handle moved.
Slowly.
Someone was trying to open it.
And standing in the darkness of the farmhouse, I realized something.
Robert had spent years hiding the truth.
Richard had spent years hunting it.
May you like
But now the secret was no longer buried.
And neither was I.
