Chapter 12: The Woman Who Finally Fought Back
Finding Tiffany was harder than expected.
Richard had erased every trace.
Her phone was disconnected.
Her apartment was empty.
Her friends claimed they had not heard from her.
But Eleanor found something.
A transaction.
A payment made from one of Richard’s companies.
A motel outside town.
We arrived just after midnight.
Daniel drove.
He barely spoke.
I could feel his guilt filling every silence.
Finally, he said:
“Mom.””
I looked out the window.
“Yes?””
“I know I can’t fix this.””
I stayed quiet.
“But I need you to know something.””
“What?””
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
Not because I doubted him.
Because I believed him.
And that made it harder.
“I believe you’re sorry.””
He swallowed.
“But?””
“But sorry doesn’t erase what happened.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
The motel appeared ahead.
Old.
Faded.
Forgotten.
The kind of place people went when they didn’t want to be found.
We found Tiffany’s room at the end of the hallway.
Daniel knocked.
“Tiffany?””
Nothing.
He knocked again.
“Tiffany, it’s me.””
A weak voice answered.
“Go away.””
Daniel looked at me.
I stepped forward.
“Tiffany.””
Silence.
“It’s Margaret.””
The lock clicked.
The door opened slightly.
Tiffany looked terrible.
Her face was bruised.
Her eyes were swollen.
The confident woman from the wedding was gone.
This was someone broken.
Daniel moved forward.
“What happened?””
She laughed bitterly.
“You still ask questions like you’re surprised.””
He stopped.
I looked at her.
“Who did this?””
She looked at me.
“My father.””
Daniel froze.
“Why?””
“Because I took something.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
“The original documents.””
I held up the box.
“We have them.””
Her face changed.
“You found them?””
“Yes.””
She stepped back.
“Then you don’t understand.””
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“My father wasn’t trying to get your land.””
“We know.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“He wanted the evidence hidden under the land.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because it proves what he did.””
“We know about the fraud.””
“No.””
She looked at Daniel.
“It proves something worse.””
The room became silent.
“What?””
Tiffany closed the door.
Then whispered:
“My father didn’t just steal from his business partners.””
She looked at me.
“He built his entire company on stolen identities.””
I stared.
“What?””
“He took over companies after their owners disappeared.””
My stomach turned.
“Thomas Whitmore.””
Tiffany nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“You knew?””
“I found out recently.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked at him.
“Because I was scared.””
That word again.
But this time, I understood.
Fear had controlled everyone.
Me.
Daniel.
Tiffany.
Everyone except Richard.
Until now.
Tiffany reached into a bag.
Pulled out a small device.
“A recording.””
She handed it to me.
“What’s on it?””
“My father.””
I pressed play.
Richard’s voice filled the room.
“If Robert refuses, we move forward without him.””
Another voice.
Unknown.
“What about the evidence?””
Richard answered:
“His wife knows nothing.””
My blood ran cold.
The recording continued.
“She’s emotional. She trusts easily.””
I closed my eyes.
Because I knew exactly who he was talking about.
Me.
Richard continued:
“Once Daniel is married, access will be easier.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel whispered:
“I was the plan.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
“Yes.””
He shook his head.
“I was the door.””
The realization crushed him.
And maybe it needed to.
Because he finally understood.
Tiffany looked at me.
“There’s more.””
“What?””
“My father has a meeting tomorrow.””
“With who?””
She hesitated.
Then said:
“The people who will take control of the land.””
I frowned.
“Who?””
She looked at the recording.
“The same people who helped him twenty years ago.””
Eleanor stepped forward.
“Who?””
Tiffany looked terrified.
Then she said the name.
A name that made Eleanor go completely still.
“Thomas Whitmore.””
Silence.
Daniel looked confused.
“But Thomas disappeared.””
Tiffany shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“He never disappeared.””
My heart pounded.
“Then where was he?””
Tiffany whispered:
“He was working with Richard the entire time.””
The room went silent.
Because the man Robert thought was a victim…
Was the man behind everything.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A voice spoke.
An older man.
Calm.
“Margaret Bennett.””
I froze.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“The man your husband died trying to expose.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Thomas Whitmore.””
He laughed softly.
“So Robert did tell you.””
I looked at Daniel.
At Tiffany.
At Eleanor.
And I knew.
The final battle had already begun.
Because the person behind Richard Collins…
Was finally stepping out of the shadows.
May you like
And he had one thing he wanted.
The truth buried beneath my land.
