Chapter 11: The Betrayal Inside the Betrayal
Nobody spoke.
Not Richard.
Not Daniel.
Not me.
Only Eleanor.
She stared at the photograph like it had reached out and slapped her.
Because unlike me, she knew exactly what it meant.
I turned slowly.
“Eleanor.””
She looked at me.
“Margaret…”
“No.””
My voice was steady.
“Not another secret.””
She swallowed.
“There is something you need to know.””
Richard smiled.
“Finally.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t get to enjoy this.””
His smile disappeared.
Good.
For the first time, I wanted him uncomfortable.
I wanted him to understand what it felt like to have the ground disappear beneath you.
I turned back to Eleanor.
“Explain.””
She looked at the photograph.
Then at me.
“I knew Robert was investigating Richard.””
“Why?””
“Because Robert discovered financial records.””
“And?””
“And he asked me to help.””
“Help how?””
She closed her eyes.
“Legally.””
I waited.
“That’s all?””
“No.””
Her voice became quieter.
“I found evidence that Richard had been moving money through fake companies.””
My heart tightened.
“So Robert was right.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Robert asked me not to.””
I laughed once.
A painful sound.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Eleanor looked hurt.
“Margaret.””
“My husband.””
“My son.””
“Now you.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone decides what I can handle.””
Richard watched silently.
I hated that he was enjoying this.
Eleanor stepped closer.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You were trying to protect the secret.””
She didn’t argue.
That hurt more.
Daniel looked between us.
“Mom…”
I raised my hand.
“Not now.””
I turned back to Eleanor.
“What does the photograph mean?””
She looked at Richard.
Then answered.
“Robert and I met Richard before anyone knew what he was doing.””
Richard laughed.
“You make it sound noble.””
Eleanor ignored him.
“Robert wanted to expose him.””
“Did you help?””
“Yes.””
“Then why are you in that picture?””
Her face changed.
“Because I met Richard alone.””
The room went cold.
“Why?””
“To get information.””
Richard smiled.
“She was very convincing.””
Eleanor looked disgusted.
“I was trying to stop you.””
“But you failed.””
“Yes.””
The word was painful.
Richard stepped closer.
“And that failure cost Robert everything.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Richard looked at me.
“Ask her.””
I turned.
“Eleanor?””
She looked away.
That was enough.
“What happened to Robert?””
Her eyes filled.
“Margaret…”
“What happened?””
Silence.
Then:
“Robert’s accident wasn’t an accident.””
The world stopped.
I couldn’t hear anything.
Not Richard.
Not Daniel.
Nothing.
“What?””
Eleanor whispered:
“He was investigating Richard’s final move.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
My voice broke.
“My husband died in a car accident.””
“Yes.””
“And you’re saying…”
She nodded.
“He was forced off the road.””
I stepped back.
My hand covered my mouth.
For years, I had mourned a tragedy.
Now I was learning it was a crime.
Daniel looked horrified.
“Who did it?””
Richard smiled.
And that smile answered before words could.
I looked at him.
“You.””
He didn’t deny it.
“You’re making assumptions.””
“You killed my husband.””
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“I removed an obstacle.””
Daniel lunged forward.
I grabbed him.
“Daniel!””
Richard smiled.
“See?””
He looked at me.
“Your son still reacts emotionally.””
“You’re sick.””
“No.””
He looked at the documents.
“I’m practical.””
“You destroyed my family.””
“I offered your family opportunity.””
Daniel stared.
“You used me.””
Richard looked at him.
“I gave you what you wanted.””
“I wanted a career.””
“You wanted status.””
Daniel went quiet.
Because Richard knew exactly where to attack.
“You wanted to stop struggling.””
Richard’s eyes moved to me.
“And your mother always gave you a way out.””
Daniel looked ashamed.
I felt something inside me break again.
But this time, it wasn’t only pain.
It was anger.
I stepped forward.
“You think people are weak because they love.””
Richard looked amused.
“I think love makes people predictable.””
“No.””
I looked directly at him.
“Love made me survive.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
One photo.
A picture of Tiffany.
She was sitting in a car.
Her face bruised.
Under the photo were four words.
*She knows everything now.*
My blood froze.
Richard saw my expression.
“What is it?””
I looked at him.
“You have Tiffany.””
His smile faded slightly.
Only slightly.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
I turned to Daniel.
“We need to find her.””
Richard laughed.
“You still think you can save everyone.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
I picked up the box of evidence.
“Now I’m saving myself.””
We walked upstairs.
But before leaving, I stopped beside Richard.
“You made one mistake.””
He looked at me.
“What?””
“You thought I was the same woman you slapped at that wedding.””
His expression changed.
I smiled.
“I’m not.””
And as we left the farmhouse, I knew something.
May you like
Richard Collins had spent decades controlling people.
But he had never faced someone who had nothing left to lose.
