Chapter 9: The Betrayal Before the Fall

I watched the video three times.

Each time, the same feeling returned.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

Because somewhere deep inside, despite everything Ethan had done, a small part of me still believed there was a line he would never cross.

I was wrong.

The video showed a private meeting.

Ethan and Vanessa sitting in a restaurant.

Not arguing.

Planning.

Vanessa placed documents on the table.

Ethan leaned forward.

“So once she’s removed, I get control?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Not control.””

She tapped the papers.

“You get your father’s legacy back.””

Ethan looked at the documents.

“And Clara?””

Vanessa laughed.

“She loses everything.””

The video ended.

I stared at the black screen.

Adrian watched my face.

“I’m sorry.””

I placed the phone down.

“I defended him.””

No one answered.

“I defended him when people warned me.””

My voice became quieter.

“I told everyone he was under pressure.””

I looked at the floor.

“I told myself success changed him.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Clara.””

But I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked up.

“I need to accept the truth.””

The woman Ethan married had disappeared years ago.

And maybe she disappeared because she spent too long protecting a man who was destroying her.

My phone rang.

This time, it was Ethan.

I answered.

“What do you want?””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Where are you?””

“Why?””

“I need to talk.””

“No.””

A pause.

“You saw the video.””

I froze.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

“Then why call?””

His voice dropped.

“Because I need you to hear the truth from me.””

I almost laughed.

“Now you care about the truth?””

“Clara.””

“Goodbye, Ethan.””

“Your mother’s trust has a weakness.””

I stopped.

“What?””

He continued.

“Vanessa found it.””

My grip tightened.

“Where did you learn that?””

“Because she showed me.””

“So you’re admitting you’re working with her.””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

“I was.””

I said nothing.

“I thought I could control the situation.””

There it was.

The sentence every arrogant person eventually says.

I thought I could control it.

“You used me.””

“I know.””

“You humiliated me.””

“I know.””

“You tried to steal the company.””

“I know.””

His voice broke.

“But Vanessa never planned to give me anything.””

I looked at Adrian.

He nodded slightly.

Keep him talking.

“What happened?””

A long silence.

Then Ethan said:

“She has someone else.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I finally understand what I did.””

The words were almost impossible to hear.

Ethan Caldwell admitting a mistake.

Not a business mistake.

A human one.

“She never loved me,” he whispered.

I felt nothing.

Not satisfaction.

Not revenge.

Just exhaustion.

“You destroyed our marriage for someone who was using you.””

“I know.””

“You destroyed yourself.””

“I know.””

I closed my eyes.

“Ethan, what do you want from me?””

A pause.

“I want to help you stop her.””

I looked at Adrian.

He shook his head slightly.

Trust no one.

Not yet.

“What does Vanessa have?””

Ethan answered immediately.

“Evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“Documents showing your mother’s trust transferred company assets before you became chairwoman.””

I frowned.

“That’s legal.””

“Yes.””

“Then why would it hurt me?””

“Because Vanessa is claiming your mother stole the company from Daniel.””

My heart sank.

“She’s rewriting history.””

“Yes.””

“And people will believe her.””

“Yes.””

I looked out the window.

The truth was not always enough.

Sometimes people believed the loudest story.

“What do you need from me?”” I asked.

Ethan hesitated.

“I need access to the original Caldwell archives.””

I immediately understood.

“No.””

“Clara.””

“You want me to trust you with company files?””

“I want to prove I’m not the man you think I am.””

I looked at the phone.

“The man I think you are is the man you showed me.””

Silence.

Then he whispered:

“I deserve that.””

The call ended.

I turned toward Adrian.

“What do we do?””

Before he could answer, every screen in the office turned on.

A live broadcast appeared.

Vanessa.

Standing in front of reporters.

Behind her was a banner.

CALDWELL TECHNOLOGIES OWNERSHIP SCANDAL.

She smiled at the cameras.

“Today, I will reveal the truth about the woman controlling this company.””

Adrian moved toward the screen.

“She’s starting.””

Vanessa held up a folder.

“And I have proof that Clara Caldwell’s position as chairwoman was built on a lie.””

The reporters shouted questions.

I watched her confidence.

Her certainty.

Then she said the words that made my entire body go cold.

“The real heir to Caldwell Technologies is not Clara Caldwell.””

She smiled.

“He is sitting in this building right now.””

The camera moved.

The crowd gasped.

Because beside Vanessa stood a man I recognized.

A man I had trusted.

A man who had worked beside me for years.

Adrian.

My brother.

And he was holding the same documents Vanessa had claimed to possess.

Adrian looked at the screen.

His face turned pale.

“That’s impossible.””

But it wasn’t.

Because someone had stolen his identity.

Someone had planned this perfectly.

And now the entire world believed my brother was the enemy.

The screen went black.

Then my phone received one final message.

A photo.

A name.

May you like

And a warning.

THE PERSON WHO BETRAYED YOU IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK.
