Chapter 8: The Brother Who Refused the Crown
I found Adrian in the oldest conference room in Caldwell Technologies.
Not the executive boardroom.
Not the luxurious office at the top of the building.
The old conference room on the twenty-third floor.
The one nobody used anymore.
It had scratched wooden tables and faded chairs.
A room forgotten by everyone.
Except him.
When I entered, Adrian was standing near the window.
He looked nothing like what I imagined.
No arrogance.
No expensive suit designed to impress people.
Just a quiet man in a gray sweater, holding a folder.
He turned.
And for a moment, neither of us spoke.
I searched his face.
Looking for my mother.
A familiar expression.
A familiar smile.
Something.
Anything.
“You know,” he said softly, “I wondered how long it would take.””
My throat tightened.
“You knew who I was?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Since the day you hired me.””
The answer hit harder than expected.
“You worked beside me knowing you were my brother?””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He walked toward the table.
“Because if I told you immediately, you would have believed I wanted something.””
I said nothing.
Because he was right.
After everything with Ethan, trust felt like a luxury I could no longer afford.
“You think I wanted the company,” Adrian continued.
“Didn’t you?””
He smiled sadly.
“No.””
“Everyone wanted something from my mother’s legacy.””
“I didn’t.””
“Then what did you want?””
He looked at me.
“For you to know the truth when you were ready.””
I laughed quietly.
“Everyone keeps deciding what I’m ready for.””
His expression softened.
“You’re right.””
That surprised me.
No defense.
No excuse.
Just acceptance.
“My mother hid you from me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Adrian looked at the folder in his hand.
“Because Daniel Caldwell tried to use us against each other.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“My father was obsessed with control.””
“He wasn’t your father?””
“He was.””
The sadness in his voice was unmistakable.
“But being someone’s father doesn’t mean they know how to love you.””
He opened the folder.
Inside were old letters.
“My mother discovered Daniel was moving company assets into private accounts.””
“My mother knew.””
“Yes.””
“And she stopped him.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the papers.
“Then why hide you?””
“Because Daniel threatened her.””
My blood ran cold.
“With what?””
“With you.””
I froze.
“He knew you existed?””
“Yes.””
Adrian looked away.
“He told my mother that if she exposed him, he would destroy both of us.””
I swallowed.
“He threatened a child?””
“He threatened everyone.””
The room became silent.
A painful silence.
“My mother spent years protecting me.””
“And me.””
He looked at me.
“That’s why she created the trust.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“She knew one day Daniel’s influence would return.””
My voice lowered.
“Through Ethan.””
Adrian did not answer.
He didn’t need to.
The answer was obvious.
I sat down.
The pieces were finally connecting.
Ethan’s obsession with legacy.
His belief that Caldwell Technologies belonged to his family.
His need to prove himself.
He had inherited a war he never understood.
“Does Ethan know about you?””
Adrian shook his head.
“Not until recently.””
“How recently?””
“The night of the promotion ceremony.””
I looked at him.
“What happened?””
“Vanessa found old records.””
My expression changed.
“She found them?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Adrian looked serious.
“She wasn’t looking for company secrets.””
“Then what was she looking for?””
“You.””
A chill moved through me.
“She wanted to know who had the power to remove Ethan.””
“And she found me.””
“Yes.””
I stood.
“She’s not just trying to expose me.””
“No.””
“Then what is she trying to do?””
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“She wants control.””
“Of the company?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
He opened another document.
I read the first line.
EMERGENCY SUCCESSION AGREEMENT.
My stomach dropped.
“What is this?””
“Your mother’s backup plan.””
I looked confused.
“Why would she create a backup plan?””
“Because she knew powerful people would fight for control.””
I read further.
Then I saw the condition.
“If the chairwoman is removed or publicly discredited…”
I stopped.
“The trust transfers voting authority.””
Adrian nodded.
“To whom?””
My eyes moved down.
And then I understood.
“Ethan.””
Silence.
My husband.
The man who betrayed me.
The man who had just lost everything.
The man who could regain control if the world believed I was unfit.
I looked at Adrian.
“Vanessa knows.””
“Yes.””
“She’s trying to destroy my reputation.””
“Yes.””
“And make Ethan the victim.””
“Yes.””
I closed the folder.
“She planned this.””
Adrian nodded.
“She planned it for months.””
My phone suddenly vibrated.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
A video.
Vanessa.
Standing beside Ethan.
My breath stopped.
Because Ethan was not angry.
He was not confused.
He was not being manipulated.
He was smiling.
May you like
The message beneath the video was only four words.
