Chapter 5: The Truth Behind Caldwell Technologies

Ethan did not answer immediately.

That was the first answer.

The man who always had something to say suddenly had nothing.

I watched him walk toward the window.

The city reflected against the glass.

Years ago, I had stood beside him in a tiny apartment watching the same lights.

Back then, he had held my hand and promised me something simple.

“I don’t want to be rich,” he had said.

“I just want to build something we’re proud of.””

I believed him.

That was the tragedy.

I believed the version of Ethan who existed before power.

“What did you know?”” I asked.

His shoulders tightened.

“My father told me stories.””

“What kind of stories?””

He turned around.

“About your mother.””

I waited.

“He said she betrayed him.””

I almost laughed.

“My mother?””

“He said she took control of the company away from him.””

“That’s not what happened.””

“I know that now.””

His voice cracked.

That caught me off guard.

Ethan sat down.

“My father died when I was twenty-one. Before he died, he told me Caldwell Technologies was supposed to belong to our family.””

I crossed my arms.

“And?””

“And he said your family took it.””

I stared at him.

“So you married me because of that?””

“No.””

His answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

I studied his face.

“I didn’t know who you were when we met.””

That was true.

When Ethan and I met, I had hidden my family background.

I wanted someone who loved me without seeing my bank accounts.

I wanted a normal life.

“I fell in love with you,” he whispered.

The words hurt more than anger.

Because once, I believed them.

“Then why did you become this person?””

He looked away.

“I don’t know.””

I walked to the desk and picked up the documents.

“Your father almost destroyed this company.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You don’t understand.””

“No, Ethan. I understand perfectly.””

I placed the documents in front of him.

“Your father wanted control. My mother stopped him.””

His eyes moved across the pages.

Then he saw something.

A signature.

His face changed.

“What?””

“What is it?””

He pointed.

“This.””

I leaned closer.

A handwritten note attached to the agreement.

I read it.

“Daniel’s son must never inherit control unless he proves he values the company over himself.””

The room went silent.

Ethan stared.

“My mother wrote that?””

“No.””

I looked at the signature.

“My mother did.””

He stood suddenly.

“She knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That I would become exactly like him.””

The words hung between us.

I wanted to deny it.

I wanted to say Ethan was different.

But the memories came rushing back.

The ignored phone calls.

The hidden meetings.

The way he treated my pregnancy like an inconvenience.

The way he smiled while destroying me.

A knock interrupted us.

Michael entered.

“Clara.””

His expression was serious.

“We found something else.””

“What?””

He handed me a tablet.

“Security footage from the executive floor.””

I looked at the screen.

A recording played.

Ethan.

Vanessa.

Inside my office.

Not the office downstairs.

My private company office.

The one nobody knew I controlled.

The video showed Vanessa opening drawers.

Looking through documents.

“What is this?””

Michael answered.

“They accessed restricted files three weeks ago.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

He hesitated.

“Because they were looking for ownership information.””

Ethan went pale.

“Vanessa did this?””

I looked at him.

“You didn’t know?””

“No.””

I watched his face.

For once, he looked shocked.

Maybe he truly had not known.

But that did not erase what he did.

The door opened again.

This time, Lily rushed in.

“Mrs. Caldwell.””

She held her phone.

“Vanessa is outside.””

I frowned.

“Outside where?””

Lily looked nervous.

“The company entrance.””

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“She is speaking to reporters.””

I grabbed the phone.

A live video was playing.

Vanessa stood outside the building.

Cameras surrounded her.

Her face was full of fake sadness.

“I was manipulated,” she told reporters.

My expression hardened.

“She is blaming Ethan.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

The reporter asked, “Are you saying Mr. Caldwell used his position to pressure you?””

Vanessa looked into the cameras.

And then she said the sentence that changed everything.

“I’m saying Ethan Caldwell is not the man people think he is.””

Ethan watched beside me.

His face was empty.

Not angry.

Not hurt.

Just destroyed.

Because he finally understood.

The woman he destroyed his marriage for…

was now destroying him.

Then Vanessa looked directly into the camera.

And smiled.

“I also have proof that the real chairwoman of Caldwell Technologies has been hiding something.””

I froze.

Michael looked at me.

“What does she mean?””

The video ended.

But one thing was clear.

Vanessa was not running away.

May you like

She was fighting.

And she knew exactly where to strike.
