Chapter 7: The Enemy Inside The Door
Clara had always believed fear announced itself.
A raised voice.
A slammed door.
A threatening gesture.
Something obvious.
Something a person could prepare for.
She was wrong.
Real fear was quieter.
It was the way Sarah stopped breathing.
The way her fingers went cold around Clara’s hand.
The way every muscle in her body seemed to scream one command.
Run.
But Clara couldn’t move.
Because the person standing in the doorway wasn’t a stranger.
It wasn’t a man with a weapon.
It wasn’t someone who looked dangerous.
It was Marco Bellini.
The restaurant manager.
The man who had once covered her shifts when her brother was sick.
The man who remembered her coffee order.
The man who had told her she was “too kind for this business.””
He stood there holding a folder against his chest.
His expression was calm.
Almost gentle.
That was the worst part.
“Sarah,” Marco said softly.
She stepped backward.
“Don’t.””
Marco’s eyes moved to Clara.
A flash of surprise crossed his face.
Then it disappeared.
“Clara.””
She stared at him.
“Why are you here?””
Marco looked at Sarah.
“Because this has gone too far.””
Sarah laughed.
A broken sound.
“You don’t get to say that.””
Marco’s jaw tightened.
“Sarah, listen to me.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You listen to me.””
The room became painfully quiet.
Marco closed the door behind him.
Not locking it.
Not threatening them.
Just closing it.
Somehow, that made Clara more nervous.
“Where’s Mr. Moretti?”” Marco asked.
Clara didn’t answer.
Marco noticed.
His eyes shifted.
“He’s downstairs.””
Still no answer.
A faint sadness crossed his face.
“You really don’t trust me anymore.””
Sarah stared at him.
“You sold Elena out.””
The words hit the room like glass breaking.
Marco froze.
Clara felt her stomach drop.
Because she had expected denial.
Anger.
Confusion.
Anything.
But Marco only looked tired.
“I didn’t.””
Sarah stepped forward.
“You think I didn’t see?””
“See what?””
“You meeting Matteo.””
Marco’s expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Clara noticed.
“You know Matteo?””
Marco looked at her.
“Everyone knows Matteo.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
A long silence followed.
Then Marco sighed.
“I made mistakes.””
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“Mistakes?””
She laughed.
“You call helping him kill Elena a mistake?””
Marco looked away.
Clara felt the room tilt.
“Did you?””
Marco looked back.
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
Clear.
“I didn’t kill Elena.””
Sarah shook her head.
“You expect us to believe that?””
“I expect you to understand that knowing someone’s plan and supporting it are two different things.””
Clara studied him.
That was not the answer of an innocent man.
But it also wasn’t the answer of someone who felt caught.
It was the answer of someone who had been carrying something heavy.
“Then tell us.””
Marco looked at her.
“You don’t know what you’re asking.””
“I’m asking why my friend is terrified.””
Sarah looked away.
Marco’s face softened.
“Sarah wasn’t supposed to be involved.””
Sarah laughed bitterly.
“Neither was Elena.””
The room went still.
Marco closed his eyes.
“Damn it.””
Clara heard movement outside.
Footsteps.
Multiple.
Marco heard them too.
His expression changed instantly.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For them.
“Hide.””
Clara stared.
“What?””
“Now.””
Sarah looked toward the door.
“They’re here.””
Marco moved toward the wall panel beside the bookshelf.
He pressed something.
A hidden section opened.
Clara froze.
Il Destino had secret rooms?
Of course it did.
This was Rico Moretti’s world.
A world where even walls had secrets.
“Inside.””
Clara grabbed Sarah’s arm.
But Sarah didn’t move.
“Why are you helping us?””
Marco looked at her.
For the first time, his mask broke.
“Because I failed Elena.””
The footsteps grew louder.
“Move.””
They entered the hidden space seconds before the door opened.
Through the narrow opening, Clara could see the room.
Marco stood alone.
A man entered.
Older.
Expensive suit.
Cold eyes.
Matteo Moretti.
Clara recognized him from the photograph.
Rico’s brother.
The man Elena had warned him about.
Matteo smiled.
“Where are they?””
Marco didn’t answer.
Matteo walked closer.
“You know what I hate about loyal people?””
Marco stared.
“They always think loyalty protects them.””
Matteo placed a hand on Marco’s shoulder.
“Where is the girl?””
Marco remained silent.
Matteo’s smile disappeared.
“You know what happened to Elena because she refused to cooperate.””
Clara felt Sarah grab her arm.
Hard.
Matteo continued.
“And now you’re making the same mistake.””
Marco looked him in the eyes.
“She was right about you.””
A dangerous silence.
Matteo smiled again.
“She always was too smart.””
Then he punched Marco.
Sarah gasped.
Clara covered her mouth.
Marco fell against the table.
Matteo adjusted his sleeve.
“Find them.””
The men with him began searching.
Then Matteo stopped.
He looked toward the hidden wall.
Clara’s heart stopped.
Had he noticed?
Matteo walked closer.
One step.
Two.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
“What?””
A pause.
His expression changed.
“What do you mean Rico knows?””
Clara looked at Sarah.
Matteo’s eyes narrowed.
“Keep him busy.””
Another pause.
Then:
“No. Do not touch the boy.””
Clara felt cold.
Because Matteo had just revealed something.
He cared about Leo being alive.
But not because he loved him.
Because Leo was useful.
Matteo ended the call.
He looked around the room.
“We leave.””
The men followed.
Only after the footsteps disappeared did Marco collapse.
The hidden door opened.
Clara rushed out.
“Are you okay?””
Marco wiped blood from his mouth.
“I’ve been better.””
Sarah stared at him.
“You knew.””
Marco looked at her.
“Yes.””
“You knew Matteo was behind it.””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
Marco’s eyes filled with regret.
“I tried.””
Sarah shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“You didn’t try hard enough.””
Marco had no answer.
Because he knew she was right.
A moment later, the door burst open.
Rico stood there.
Dante behind him.
His eyes immediately found Leo’s absence.
“Where is my son?””
Clara stepped forward.
“He’s safe.””
Rico’s expression eased slightly.
Then he saw Marco.
The blood.
The room.
The hidden door.
His face changed.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered.
Then Sarah looked at Rico.
And said the words that changed everything.
“Your brother didn’t just kill Elena.””
May you like
A pause.
“He’s trying to take Leo.””
