Chapter 14: The Woman Who Planned Her Own Goodbye

Rico stared at the phone.

He didn’t understand.

He couldn’t.

Elena.

The woman who had been murdered.

The woman everyone believed had been a victim.

The woman whose death had destroyed his family.

Was connected to the money?

“No.””

Dante’s voice came through the speaker.

“Sir.””

“No.””

Rico repeated it.

Not as an answer.

As a refusal.

“My wife would never.””

Clara watched him.

Not because she doubted him.

Because she understood.

Sometimes the hardest truths weren’t about enemies.

They were about people we loved.

“Send me everything.””

Dante hesitated.

“Sir.””

“Everything.””

The call ended.

Rico stood there silently.

Leo looked up.

“Daddy?””

Rico immediately knelt.

“I’m okay.””

Leo frowned.

“You lying again.””

Clara almost smiled.

Even now.

Even in chaos.

The child saw through him.

Rico touched his son’s hair.

“Yeah.””

A pause.

“I am.””

Later that night, they gathered in Rico’s private office.

The documents were spread across the desk.

Clara stood beside Isabella.

Dante stood near the window.

Rico read every page.

Then he read them again.

Finally, he leaned back.

“Elena created this account.””

Dante nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Until Isabella spoke.

“Because she knew.””

Rico looked at her.

“Knew what?””

“That if she disappeared, you would destroy yourself trying to find the person responsible.””

Rico looked away.

Because again, Elena had known him.

Too well.

“She wanted to protect Leo.””

“How?””

Isabella pointed at the documents.

“She moved money away from the family businesses.””

Dante looked closer.

“She was hiding assets.””

“Yes.””

Rico frowned.

“From me?””

Isabella nodded.

“For Leo.””

The room became quiet.

Elena had not betrayed him.

She had protected their son.

Even from him.

Clara watched the realization settle.

Rico had spent months believing he failed Elena.

But maybe Elena had spent her final days trying to save what mattered most.

His family.

Dante found another document.

“Sir.””

Rico looked over.

“What?””

“This signature.””

He pointed.

“This authorization was made three days before Elena died.””

Rico frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because she was already being watched.””

Dante nodded.

“Exactly.””

Clara stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Rico stared at the signature.

Then he whispered:

“She had help.””

A long silence.

“Who?””

Rico looked at the document.

The answer was there.

The person who helped Elena move the money.

The person who helped hide the accounts.

The person she trusted.

A name.

Rico’s expression changed.

“No.””

Dante saw it.

“Who?””

Rico didn’t answer.

Because the person was impossible.

The person was family.

Again.

“Rico.””

He handed over the document.

Dante read.

Then looked shocked.

Clara leaned closer.

“What does it say?””

Rico looked at her.

“It says my father’s old attorney helped Elena.””

Dante frowned.

“But he died years ago.””

Rico nodded.

“Yes.””

“So?””

Rico looked at the date.

“He signed it after his death.””

Everyone went silent.

A dead man’s signature.

A hidden account.

A family secret.

None of it made sense.

Until Isabella spoke.

“Unless he wasn’t dead.””

Rico looked at her.

“What are you saying?””

She swallowed.

“I’m saying your family has been hiding things for a very long time.””

Before anyone could respond, the lights went out.

Every light.

The entire house went dark.

Dante immediately moved.

“Security!””

No response.

Rico stood.

“Something’s wrong.””

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Confident.

Everyone prepared.

Then the emergency lights turned on.

A figure stood at the end of the hall.

Older.

Gray hair.

A familiar face.

Rico froze.

Because the man standing there was impossible.

His father’s attorney.

The man who had died fifteen years ago.

The man whose signature was on Elena’s documents.

The man everyone thought was gone.

He looked at Rico.

May you like

And said:

“You finally found the truth.””
