Chapter 5: The Man Elena Trusted

Nobody in Il Destino moved.

The stranger stood beneath the entrance lights like he belonged there.

Maybe he did.

That was what made it worse.

Rico Moretti trusted very few people.

But this man had been one of them.

Adrian Vale.

Elena’s closest friend.

Rico’s former business partner.

The man who had supposedly died six months ago in a warehouse fire.

The man whose funeral Rico had attended.

The man whose ashes sat in a cemetery outside Queens.

Except he was standing alive in front of him.

Dante’s hand went toward his weapon.

“Don’t.””

Rico’s voice stopped him.

Dante looked back.

“Sir?””

“I said don’t.””

Adrian smiled slightly.

“Still protecting people who might betray you.””

Rico stared.

“You have five seconds to explain.””

Adrian looked at Leo.

Then at Clara.

His expression softened.

“Is that Elena’s son?””

The room changed.

Rico stepped forward.

“Do not look at him.””

Adrian immediately stopped.

For the first time, his smile disappeared.

“I’m sorry.””

Rico’s eyes narrowed.

“Where have you been?””

“Running.””

“From who?””

Adrian looked around the restaurant.

“From the same people who killed Elena.””

Dante stepped forward.

“That’s convenient.””

“Yes.””

Adrian nodded.

“Very.””

He reached slowly into his coat.

Every person in the room tensed.

Then he removed a small envelope and placed it on the nearest table.

“For Rico.””

Rico didn’t move.

“Open it.””

“You first.””

Adrian sighed.

“Still impossible.””

“You’re alive.””

“Yes.””

“You disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“My wife died.””

Adrian looked down.

“Yes.””

The answer was too honest.

It unsettled Rico more than a lie would have.

“Explain.””

Adrian looked at Clara.

“Not with a child here.””

Rico glanced at Leo.

The boy was watching Adrian carefully.

Not afraid.

Just confused.

Clara noticed.

“He knows something.””

Rico looked at her.

“What?””

“He recognized him.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Of course he did.””

Rico turned sharply.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian looked at Leo.

“Because I was there the day Elena brought him home from the hospital.””

The words hit.

Rico remembered.

Adrian had been there.

He had held newborn Leo.

He had joked that the boy had Rico’s stubbornness and Elena’s eyes.

He had been family.

And family was supposed to be impossible to lose.

Rico picked up the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Elena.

Alive.

Standing outside a building.

And beside her was someone Rico recognized.

Someone he trusted.

His older brother.

Matteo Moretti.

Rico’s face changed.

“No.””

Adrian watched him.

“She found the truth.””

Rico looked up.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

“You expect me to believe my brother killed my wife?””

“No.””

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“I expect you to believe Elena.””

Rico stared at the picture.

Because in the background, Elena had written something.

A note.

A warning.

*If anything happens to me, don’t trust Matteo.*

The room felt smaller.

Dante looked away.

He had known Matteo for years.

Clara watched Rico carefully.

The strongest man she had ever seen looked like someone had just taken the ground out from under him.

“He was my brother.””

Adrian said nothing.

Rico laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

“My brother.””

Clara had never heard a person say two words that sounded so broken.

Leo stepped closer.

“Daddy sad?””

Rico immediately looked down.

He forced his expression to soften.

“No, buddy.””

Leo touched his arm.

“You lying.””

Everyone froze.

Because the three-year-old had said it so simply.

So honestly.

Rico looked at him.

And Clara saw something happen.

The feared man of Brooklyn didn’t know how to answer his son.

Because power couldn’t fix that.

Money couldn’t fix that.

Fear couldn’t fix that.

So he did the only thing he could.

He told the truth.

“Yeah.””

He swallowed.

“Daddy is sad.””

Leo stared at him.

Then slowly wrapped his arms around Rico’s neck.

Rico went completely still.

Clara watched.

The man who could command rooms with a glance looked shocked by a child’s hug.

His hands hovered.

Like he was afraid touching his own son might break the moment.

Then he hugged him back.

Carefully.

Like holding something priceless.

Adrian looked away.

Giving them privacy.

But Clara noticed something.

He looked sad.

Not jealous.

Not angry.

Sad.

As if he had lost something too.

Minutes later, after Leo fell asleep against Rico’s shoulder, Dante approached.

“Sir.””

Rico looked up.

“What?””

“We found something.””

Rico’s expression hardened.

“Already?””

Dante nodded.

“We checked the camera system.””

“And?””

Dante hesitated.

“There was another person in the restaurant before the warning was sent.””

“Who?””

Dante handed him a tablet.

The security footage showed the hallway outside Il Destino.

A person walking through the back entrance.

A person who knew the security codes.

A person who had access to every restricted area.

Rico watched the figure turn toward the camera.

Then stop.

Then smile.

Clara felt cold.

May you like

Because she recognized the person before Rico said the name.

“Sarah.””
