Chapter 6: The Truth Emily Left Behind

I didn’t sleep that night.

Neither did Sophie.

Neither did Vanessa.

The three of us sat in my living room while the world outside continued like nothing had changed.

Cars passed.

Neighbors walked their dogs.

People went to work.

Nobody knew that my entire life had shifted in one afternoon.

The wedding that was supposed to begin a new chapter had revealed that the previous one wasn’t finished.

I kept looking at the photograph.

Emily.

Our daughter.

A hidden message.

Ask Daniel about the night she died.

The question haunted me.

Because there was one problem.

I knew exactly what happened that night.

Or at least I thought I did.

Emily called me at 8:42 p.m.

I remembered because I was in the middle of making Sophie’s dinner.

Emily said she was leaving work.

She sounded tired.

Normal.

She told me she loved me.

I told her I loved her.

Twenty minutes later, the police called.

That was the story.

That was the memory I built my entire life around.

But now someone was telling me I was wrong.

Vanessa sat across from me.

“You never told me about the call.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“The last call.””

I stared at her.

“How do you know about that?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“Emily wrote about it.””

My body went still.

“What?””

“In the journal.””

I grabbed the journal.

I flipped through pages.

“Where?””

“Near the end.””

I searched.

Then I found it.

Daniel knows I called him.

But he doesn’t know what I was going to say.

My hands shook.

I read further.

I can’t tell him yet.

If I’m wrong, I’ll destroy everything.

If I’m right, I’ll put him and Sophie in danger.

I closed my eyes.

Emily had been afraid.

And I never knew.

“What was she hiding from me?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me this before?””

Her expression changed.

The guilt returned.

“Because I thought it would make you hate me.””

I almost laughed.

“You thought sending my daughter away wouldn’t?””

She looked down.

“I was wrong.””

That was the first honest thing she had said all day.

Then my phone rang.

This time, it wasn’t unknown.

It was my old friend, Marcus.

I answered immediately.

“Marcus?””

“Daniel, where are you?””

“At home.””

“You need to listen carefully.””

His voice was tense.

“What happened?””

“I checked the license plate from the photo.””

I frowned.

“What photo?””

“The one someone sent you.””

My grip tightened.

“How do you know about that?””

“Because I got a call from someone asking me to identify it.””

The room went quiet.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Marcus.””

“I traced it.””

My heartbeat increased.

“And?””

“It belongs to a company.””

“What company?””

A pause.

Then:

“Carter Family Services.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Daniel, I think you need to see something.””

My eyes moved toward Sophie.

“What?””

“There’s a file.””

“What kind of file?””

“A file connected to Emily.””

My stomach dropped.

“Where?””

“Your old office.””

I looked around.

My old office.

The place where I kept documents.

The place where Emily’s things had been stored before I moved.

“I’ll meet you there.””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“Come alone.””

I immediately looked at Sophie.

“No.””

“Daniel, listen—”

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“I’m done leaving my daughter behind while other people make decisions.””

A silence.

Then Marcus said:

“Good.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Because I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“The person who has been hiding this information…”

He stopped.

“Marcus?””

His voice became barely audible.

“They’re closer to you than you think.””

The call ended.

I stood slowly.

Vanessa looked at me.

“What did he say?””

I grabbed my jacket.

“We’re going to my office.””

Sophie stood immediately.

“I’m coming.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

Her face fell.

Then I remembered the suitcase.

The hallway.

The fear.

I knelt.

“You are coming with me.””

Vanessa looked surprised.

I didn’t explain.

Because the truth was simple.

I wasn’t leaving Sophie alone with anyone again.

Not after today.

Not after what I learned.

We drove across town.

The entire way, nobody spoke.

When we arrived, the building looked exactly the same.

Same glass doors.

Same lobby.

Same security desk.

But something felt wrong.

The receptionist looked nervous when she saw me.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes.””

“There was someone here earlier.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at Sophie.

Then whispered:

“They asked about your wife.””

My hands curled.

“What did they look like?””

She hesitated.

Then pointed toward the elevator.

“Like her.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“Like who?””

The receptionist swallowed.

“Like Emily Carter.””

The elevator doors opened.

And inside was a small package.

Addressed to me.

No sender.

Only one sentence written across the top.

YOU FINALLY CAME LOOKING FOR THE TRUTH.

I opened it.

Inside was a key.

The same symbol.

E.C.

And beneath it…

May you like

A photograph of Emily.

Taken after the night she supposedly died.
