Chapter 12: The Child Emily Protected

I couldn’t move.

The photograph slipped slightly in my hand.

A baby.

Emily holding a baby.

Not Sophie.

Not a stranger.

A child.

My child.

The sentence repeated in my mind.

The baby was yours.

I looked at Vanessa.

Then Marcus.

Then Rebecca.

Nobody spoke.

Because there were no words that could make sense of what I was seeing.

“My child?””

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

Marcus looked shocked.

Vanessa looked devastated.

Rebecca whispered:

“Daniel…”

I turned to her.

“Did you know?””

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“Did anyone know?””

Nobody answered.

And that silence terrified me more than anything.

I looked at the letter again.

Emily’s handwriting.

The same handwriting that had written birthday notes.

Grocery lists.

Love letters.

Now it was telling me I had another child.

I unfolded the rest.

Daniel,

I wanted to tell you.

I tried.

But everything changed when I discovered the truth about Carter Holdings.

The baby was born through a mistake that was never supposed to happen.

I was not angry.

I was not leaving you.

I was trying to protect you.

Protect us.

I stopped reading.

A mistake?

What did that mean?

I looked at the photograph.

Emily was smiling.

Not the smile of someone hiding betrayal.

The smile of someone protecting a baby.

A baby she cared about.

A baby connected to me.

I whispered:

“Who is the child?””

No answer.

I searched the box again.

Nothing.

Except the flash drive.

I plugged it into Marcus’s laptop.

One file appeared.

EMILY_FINAL.

I opened it.

A video started.

Emily appeared again.

But this time she was crying.

Not scared.

Broken.

“Daniel.””

My heart cracked hearing my name from her.

“If you’re watching this, then I ran out of time.””

She took a breath.

“There is something I need to tell you.””

She looked down.

“The baby you see in the photo is not someone else’s.””

My hands tightened.

“She is ours.””

The room disappeared.

Sophie.

Vanessa.

Everyone.

Gone.

Only Emily’s voice remained.

“She was born two months before Sophie.””

I stopped breathing.

Two months before Sophie.

A daughter.

Another daughter.

“How?””

Emily continued.

“I never cheated on you.””

I closed my eyes.

Because somehow she knew the question I would ask.

“She was from a surrogacy arrangement.””

I opened my eyes.

A surrogate.

My mind struggled to catch up.

Emily continued.

“Before Sophie was born, we tried to have another child. We wanted a bigger family. We wanted Sophie to have a sibling.””

I looked at Sophie.

She was watching me.

Confused.

Emily’s voice trembled.

“But when the baby was born, we discovered something impossible.””

The video paused.

Then continued.

“The hospital records were changed.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Emily looked directly at the camera.

“Someone switched the records.””

Marcus leaned closer.

“What does that mean?””

I couldn’t answer.

Emily continued.

“The baby was taken into another system.””

My blood ran cold.

“Why?””

“Because someone wanted control.””

She wiped her tears.

“Daniel, your father was involved.””

My chest tightened.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

“He knew about the baby.””

I stared at the screen.

“He knew I was trying to expose him.””

Emily’s voice lowered.

“He threatened me.””

I felt sick.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because he threatened Sophie.””

I looked at my daughter.

Emily continued.

“He told me if I went to the police, if I told you, Sophie would disappear too.””

I covered my mouth.

The pain was overwhelming.

Emily wasn’t hiding another child from me.

She was protecting the child we already had.

The child I never knew existed.

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Sophie quietly asked:

“Dad?””

I turned.

“What?””

She looked at the photograph.

“Do I have a sister?””

I didn’t know how to answer.

Because I had spent years trying to protect her from losing family.

And now I was discovering another piece of our family had been stolen.

I hugged her.

“Yes.””

Her eyes widened.

“Where is she?””

That was the question.

The one nobody wanted to answer.

Then Marcus’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

I stood.

“What happened?””

He looked at me.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

He turned the phone around.

A message.

A photograph.

A teenage girl.

Standing outside a school.

And beneath it:

YOU’VE BEEN LOOKING FOR HER.

YOU JUST DIDN’T KNOW HER NAME.

I stared at the picture.

The girl had Emily’s eyes.

And my heart stopped when I saw the name attached.

SOPHIA CARTER.

Not my Sophie.

Another Sophia.

May you like

My daughter.

Still alive.
