Chapter 10: Emily’s Final Message

I watched the video three times.

The first time, I couldn’t move.

The second time, I looked for signs that it wasn’t real.

The third time, I finally accepted the impossible.

Emily had recorded a message after the night she supposedly died.

She knew something was coming.

She knew she might not survive.

And she had prepared for the possibility that I would one day find this.

The screen froze on her face.

My wife.

The woman whose voice I had spent three years trying not to forget.

Vanessa stood across from me, silent.

For once, she wasn’t trying to explain herself.

She wasn’t defending her actions.

She was watching the same woman who had haunted every room we entered.

I pressed play again.

Emily’s voice filled the hotel room.

“Daniel, if you’re watching this, it means Vanessa failed to protect Sophie.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face turned pale.

The video continued.

“I know that sounds impossible. I know you probably don’t understand why Vanessa would be involved. But please listen to everything before you make any decisions.””

I froze.

Emily knew.

She knew Vanessa.

She knew what would happen.

The video showed Emily sitting at a small table.

Her hair was pulled back.

She looked tired.

Not like someone preparing a goodbye.

Like someone preparing for a fight.

“I found out about Carter Holdings.””

My chest tightened.

“I found out my father-in-law was using the company for things Daniel would never approve of.””

I stopped the video.

My hands started shaking.

My father.

Richard Carter.

The man who taught me that loyalty mattered more than money.

The man who told me family always protected family.

I pressed play.

“Daniel, your father wasn’t alone.””

A pause.

“There was someone helping him.””

I leaned closer.

“Someone who had access to everything. Someone who knew every decision. Someone who knew every weakness.””

Emily looked directly into the camera.

“And that person was closer to us than you think.””

The video ended.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Just darkness.

I sat there staring at the screen.

Because suddenly the message from the photograph made sense.

The person who caused my death is someone you trust.

Someone close.

Someone who knew exactly how to break my life apart.

Vanessa sat down slowly.

“I didn’t know about the video.””

I didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

Her voice was quiet.

“I really didn’t.””

I looked at her.

“Why should I believe anything you say?””

She accepted the question.

“I don’t know.””

That answer surprised me.

She didn’t fight.

She didn’t manipulate.

She just looked exhausted.

“I made terrible choices.””

“Yes.””

“I hurt Sophie.””

“Yes.””

Her eyes filled.

“But I never wanted her gone forever.””

I looked away.

Because part of me wanted to hate her.

It would have been easier.

Simple.

Clean.

But life wasn’t simple anymore.

The woman who betrayed me had also been threatened.

The woman I trusted had hidden things.

The woman I loved had almost destroyed my family.

And somewhere behind all of it was someone worse.

Someone who had been watching.

Waiting.

Planning.

My phone rang.

Marcus.

I answered.

“Did you find something?””

His voice was low.

“Daniel, I need you to get out of that hotel.””

My body immediately tensed.

“Why?””

“Because someone accessed your reservation.””

I stood.

“What?””

“I checked the system.””

“How?””

“Don’t ask.””

“Marcus.””

“There was a request made thirty minutes ago.””

“From who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your father’s old attorney.””

My blood ran cold.

“My father’s attorney died.””

“I know.””

The room went silent.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying someone is using his account.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She saw my face change.

“What happened?””

I ignored her.

“Marcus, send me the name.””

A few seconds later, my phone buzzed.

I opened the message.

The name appeared.

Thomas Reed.

My father’s closest friend.

My godfather.

The man who gave a speech at my wedding rehearsal.

The man who held Sophie after Emily died.

The man who told me:

“You and that little girl are going to be okay.””

My stomach turned.

No.

Not him.

Not Thomas.

I remembered Emily’s words.

Someone closer than you think.

I looked at the sleeping room where Sophie was.

My daughter.

My entire world.

And suddenly every memory felt dangerous.

Because what if the person who comforted us after Emily died…

Was the same person who caused it?

We left the hotel within minutes.

No luggage.

No plans.

Just movement.

Marcus met us at a parking garage two streets away.

When he saw my face, he already knew something was wrong.

“You found out.””

I nodded.

“Thomas Reed.””

Marcus looked away.

“That’s what I thought.””

I stared at him.

“You thought?””

He sighed.

“I’ve been investigating Carter Holdings for months.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t have proof.””

I looked at him.

“Now?””

He handed me a folder.

Inside were copies of old documents.

Payments.

Transfers.

Messages.

And one photograph.

Thomas.

My father.

And someone else.

Emily.

My hands froze.

“When was this taken?””

“Two days before she died.””

I looked closer.

Emily looked angry.

Not scared.

Angry.

“She knew.””

Marcus nodded.

“She confronted them.””

“Who?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“Your father’s secret partner.””

I turned the photograph over.

A name was written on the back.

A name I had never expected.

Vanessa Reed.

My mind went blank.

“What?””

Marcus pointed at the picture.

“That’s Thomas’s daughter.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“No.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The world stopped.

I looked at Vanessa.

Then at the photograph.

Then back at her.

“You knew Thomas Reed?””

Her face went completely pale.

“I…”

“Answer me.””

She swallowed.

“Yes.””

“How?””

May you like

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because he’s my father.””
