Chapter 7: The Return of the Sister Everyone Lost
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Claire couldn’t even breathe.
The woman standing in the doorway looked impossible.
Like a memory that had somehow stepped out of the past.
The same dark eyes.
The same small scar above her eyebrow from when they were children.
The same expression Claire had seen hundreds of times before.
It was Emily.
Her sister.
The person everyone had spent eight years grieving.
Maya stood frozen beside Claire, gripping her mother’s hand.
Daniel looked like he had seen a ghost.
Because he had.
Emily slowly stepped into the room.
Her eyes never left him.
“You were never supposed to find me.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Emily…”
Claire turned sharply toward him.
The way he said her name wasn’t the way someone spoke about a stranger.
It was the way someone spoke about someone who had haunted their dreams.
“You knew she was alive,” Claire whispered.
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Claire’s face changed.
“You knew.””
“Claire, listen—”
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You let me believe my sister was gone.””
Daniel looked at Emily.
“I thought she was safe.””
Emily gave a bitter laugh.
“Safe?””
She stepped farther into the room.
“Is that what you call hiding someone from their own family?””
Claire looked between them.
“Someone explain this.””
Emily finally looked at her.
The moment their eyes met, both sisters froze.
Eight years disappeared in one second.
Claire remembered Emily brushing her hair before school.
Emily sneaking her extra dessert at family dinners.
Emily promising she would always protect her.
Then she remembered the empty bedroom.
The unanswered calls.
The years of wondering.
“Why?”” Claire whispered.
Emily’s expression broke.
“I tried to come back.””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“Then why didn’t you?””
Emily looked at Daniel.
“Because he made sure I couldn’t.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“That’s not true.””
Emily’s face hardened.
“You’re still doing it.””
“Doing what?””
“Acting like the victim.””
The words hit the room like a door slamming shut.
Maya moved closer to Claire.
Claire noticed.
Even after everything, her daughter still looked afraid.
And suddenly Claire understood something.
This was not just about the vase.
It was not just about a lie.
Daniel had spent years creating versions of reality where everyone else was wrong and he was innocent.
Emily walked toward the table.
She placed a small bag down.
“I brought the proof.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What proof?””
Emily looked at him.
“The proof you spent years trying to find.””
Claire looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
Emily reached inside the bag and pulled out an old notebook.
The cover was damaged.
The pages were yellow.
She placed it on the table.
“This belonged to Grandpa.””
Claire stared.
Their grandfather’s notebook.
The one nobody had seen since before Emily disappeared.
“Where did you get that?””
Emily looked at her.
“I found it.””
“Where?””
“Where he hid it.””
Claire opened the notebook carefully.
The first pages contained family records.
Dates.
Names.
Property information.
Then she saw something familiar.
The vase.
There were drawings of it.
Notes about its origin.
And a sentence written underneath.
“The Ashford inheritance was never about wealth. It was about proof.””
Claire looked up.
“Proof of what?””
Emily sat down.
“That our family owned something someone else wanted.””
Daniel looked away.
Emily noticed.
“You know exactly what I mean.””
Claire turned to Daniel.
“What is she talking about?””
Daniel stayed silent.
Emily answered for him.
“Years ago, Daniel discovered that the Ashford family had documents proving ownership of land and assets that were hidden during a legal dispute.””
Claire frowned.
“Land?””
“Yes.””
“But why would he care?””
Emily looked at Daniel.
“Because his father was involved.””
The room became silent.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“Your father?””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Emily continued.
“Daniel grew up believing your family destroyed his father’s life.””
“That’s not true,” Daniel said.
Emily looked at him.
“You spent years telling yourself it was.””
Claire felt overwhelmed.
“Wait.””
She looked at Emily.
“So Daniel came into our family because of revenge?””
Emily hesitated.
“No.””
That answer surprised Claire.
“Then why?””
Emily looked down.
“At first, I think he wanted answers.””
She glanced at Daniel.
“Then he wanted control.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
Emily laughed quietly.
“I understand more than anyone.””
She pointed at him.
“I was there when you changed.””
Claire looked at Daniel.
“What happened between you two?””
Emily took a deep breath.
“When I discovered what Daniel was doing, I confronted him.””
“Doing what?””
“Searching Grandpa’s belongings.””
Claire looked at the notebook.
“He thought there was something hidden inside the family records.””
“And was there?””
Emily looked at the notebook.
“Yes.””
Claire leaned closer.
“What?””
Emily turned a page.
A small handwritten note appeared.
But before Claire could read it, Emily closed the notebook.
“Not yet.””
Claire frowned.
“Why?””
“Because if Daniel knows exactly what we found, he’ll try to take it.””
Daniel suddenly spoke.
“You don’t know what you’re risking.””
Emily looked at him.
“No. You don’t know what you’re risking.””
The tension between them was impossible to ignore.
Claire realized there was a story between them.
One she had never heard.
One Daniel had erased.
“Emily,” Claire said quietly.
“What happened the night you disappeared?””
Emily looked at her sister.
For the first time, the anger disappeared.
Only sadness remained.
“I found the evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“The evidence that proved Daniel had been manipulating people for years.””
Claire looked at Daniel.
Emily continued.
“He knew I was going to expose him.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I never hurt you.””
Emily stared.
“You followed me.””
“I was trying to talk.””
“You took my phone.””
Daniel said nothing.
Claire’s eyes widened.
“What?””
Emily looked at her.
“That night, I was leaving town because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of him?””
“Yes.””
Claire looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
“I called the police.””
Emily’s voice became softer.
“But before they arrived, Daniel convinced them I was unstable.””
Claire felt sick.
The same strategy.
The same lie.
Different person.
Different victim.
The room went quiet.
Then Maya spoke.
A small voice.
“But why did he blame me?””
Everyone looked at her.
Maya held her rabbit tightly.
“If he wanted the notebook… why did he say I broke the vase?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Because that was the question nobody wanted to face.
Emily looked at Maya.
And her expression changed.
She walked closer and knelt down.
“Because he needed to know something.””
Maya whispered:
“What?””
Emily looked at Claire.
Then at Daniel.
“He needed to know if your family would believe him.””
Claire felt a chill.
The vase was never about the vase.
It was a test.
Daniel had created a situation where everyone had to choose.
Him.
Or Maya.
And if nobody checked the camera…
If nobody questioned him…
He would have succeeded.
Daniel suddenly moved toward the notebook.
Claire stepped in front of it.
“No.””
His eyes narrowed.
“Claire.””
“No more secrets.””
Daniel stopped.
For a moment, he looked defeated.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone looked at it.
He glanced at the screen.
And his expression changed.
Emily noticed.
“Who is it?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
The phone continued ringing.
Claire saw the name on the screen.
A name she didn’t recognize.
But Emily did.
Her face turned pale.
“No.””
Claire looked at her.
“What?””
Emily whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
The phone kept ringing.
Daniel slowly answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel’s face lost all color.
A voice came through the speaker.
A voice Claire couldn’t hear clearly.
But she heard Daniel’s response.
“Wait…”
A pause.
Then:
“You’re alive?””
Emily stepped backward.
Because she knew exactly who was calling.
And before Daniel could say another word, the person on the other end spoke again.
This time, the voice was loud enough for everyone to hear.
“Daniel, you have something that belongs to me.””
Emily’s eyes widened.
Because the voice belonged to the one person she thought had disappeared forever.
Her father.
Claire’s grandfather.
The man whose death had started the entire mystery.
But he wasn’t dead.
May you like
He was alive.
And he wanted the notebook back.
