Chapter 4: The Woman From His Past
Claire did not sleep that night.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Maya standing in the living room.
The broken vase.
The accusing fingers.
The way her daughter looked around the room, searching for one person who would say, “I believe you.””
And now Claire knew something that made her feel even worse.
Daniel had done it before.
Not the exact same thing.
But the same cruelty.
The same pattern.
Find someone smaller.
Someone easier to blame.
Someone whose voice people would ignore.
Then stand there pretending to be the victim.
At six in the morning, Claire was already dressed.
She sat at the kitchen table with her laptop open, staring at the messages from Rebecca.
She had read them dozens of times.
Every sentence felt impossible.
But every piece of evidence made Daniel’s story weaker.
The old photograph.
The legal documents.
The way he reacted when she mentioned Rebecca’s name.
He wasn’t surprised.
He was afraid.
The sound of small footsteps interrupted her thoughts.
“Mama?””
Claire looked up.
Maya stood in the doorway holding her stuffed rabbit.
“Why are you awake?””
Maya shrugged.
“I heard you walking.””
Claire forced a smile.
“Come here.””
Maya climbed onto the chair beside her.
For a few seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Maya quietly asked:
“Is Daniel leaving?””
Claire looked at her daughter.
The question was so simple.
So innocent.
But it carried everything Maya had been feeling.
Fear.
Uncertainty.
A child wondering if the person who hurt her would still be part of her life.
“I don’t know yet,” Claire admitted.
Maya looked down at her rabbit.
“Did I make you and him fight?””
Claire immediately shook her head.
“No.””
“But if I didn’t touch the vase…”
“You didn’t.””
Maya looked up.
This time, Claire didn’t hesitate.
“You didn’t break anything.””
The little girl’s eyes filled with tears.
“Why didn’t you believe me before?””
Claire felt the pain of those words.
Because she deserved them.
“I should have.””
Maya wiped her face.
“I told the truth.””
“I know.””
“But nobody listened.””
Claire reached across the table and held her hand.
“I’m listening now.””
Maya squeezed her fingers.
“But Daniel is still here.””
Claire looked toward the hallway.
She knew Maya was right.
Daniel was still in the house.
Still somewhere nearby.
Still dangerous because she no longer knew what he was capable of.
A few minutes later, Claire heard his footsteps.
Daniel entered the kitchen.
His expression was calm.
Too calm.
“Morning.””
Neither Claire nor Maya answered.
Daniel looked between them.
Then he smiled slightly.
“I see we’re having family conversations without me.””
Claire stood.
“Maya, go upstairs and get ready for school.””
Maya hesitated.
Then she left.
Daniel watched her leave.
“She’s afraid of me.””
Claire turned.
“Yes.””
His face tightened.
“You’re making me the villain.””
“No.””
Claire stepped closer.
“You did that yourself.””
Daniel sighed.
“You really talked to Rebecca.””
It wasn’t a question.
Claire froze.
“How do you know?””
Daniel walked toward the counter and poured himself coffee.
“Because she always finds a way back.””
“Who is she?””
“You know who she is.””
“No, Daniel. I know the version of her you told me.””
He looked at her.
“The version where she was unstable.””
“The version where she was difficult.””
“The version where everything was her fault.””
Daniel said nothing.
Claire continued.
“You made me hate someone I had never met.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“She betrayed me.””
“Did she?””
“Yes.””
“Or did she discover something you wanted hidden?””
The silence returned.
Daniel placed the coffee cup down.
“You have no idea what she’s capable of.””
Claire shook her head.
“That’s the same thing you said about me believing Maya.””
Daniel stared at her.
For the first time, Claire saw something behind his eyes.
Not anger.
Calculation.
He was thinking.
Planning.
And that frightened her more.
“I think you should leave,” Claire said.
Daniel laughed quietly.
“You’re serious?””
“Yes.””
“You’re going to throw away our marriage because of a stranger?””
Claire looked at him.
“No.””
She pointed toward the staircase.
“I’m protecting my daughter because of what I saw with my own eyes.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
The calm disappeared.
“You’re making a mistake.””
“Maybe.””
Claire took a breath.
“But this time, I’m making my own decision.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You don’t know what you’re getting yourself into.””
Claire held his gaze.
“Then tell me.””
He stopped.
“Tell me everything.””
Daniel looked away.
And Claire knew.
She had asked the one question he never wanted to answer.
Later that morning, Claire met Rebecca at a quiet coffee shop across town.
She almost turned around twice before entering.
She didn’t know what to expect.
A liar?
A jealous ex-wife?
Someone trying to destroy Daniel?
But when she saw Rebecca sitting alone by the window, Claire noticed something unexpected.
She looked tired.
Not dangerous.
Not angry.
Just tired.
Rebecca stood when Claire approached.
“Claire?””
Claire nodded.
Rebecca looked at her carefully.
“I’m sorry.””
Claire frowned.
“For what?””
“For not reaching out sooner.””
Claire sat down.
“You knew about Maya?””
Rebecca looked down.
“I saw the article.””
“And you knew Daniel would do something like that?””
Rebecca’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised Claire.
Rebecca opened her bag and placed a folder on the table.
“I brought everything.””
Claire looked at the folder.
“What is it?””
“Records. Messages. Court documents.””
“From your divorce?””
Rebecca shook her head.
“From after.””
Claire opened the folder.
Inside were printed emails.
Photos.
Statements.
And something that immediately caught her attention.
A police report.
She looked at Rebecca.
“What happened?””
Rebecca took a breath.
“After I divorced Daniel, he tried to make sure nobody believed me.””
“How?””
“He told everyone I was unstable. He told my family I was trying to ruin his life.””
Claire looked through the documents.
The same accusations.
The same words.
The same strategy.
Then Rebecca placed one more item on the table.
A small envelope.
“What is this?””
Rebecca looked nervous.
“The reason I think Daniel chose Maya.””
Claire slowly opened it.
Inside was an old photograph.
Not the one she had already seen.
A different one.
This picture showed Daniel standing in the Ashford mansion again.
But this time, he wasn’t alone.
Standing beside him was a young woman.
Claire recognized her immediately.
Her breath caught.
Because she knew that face.
Everyone in the Ashford family knew that face.
It was Claire’s older sister, Emily.
The sister who disappeared eight years ago.
The sister nobody talked about anymore.
Claire looked at Rebecca in shock.
“What does my sister have to do with Daniel?””
Rebecca’s voice became quiet.
“Everything.””
Claire stared at the photograph.
A thousand questions rushed through her mind.
Why was Daniel with Emily?
Why had he been in the mansion years before they met?
Why had nobody ever told her?
Then Rebecca whispered the words that changed everything.
“Daniel didn’t enter your family by accident.””
Claire looked up.
“What do you mean?””
Rebecca pushed another document across the table.
A name was written on the page.
A name Claire had never seen connected to Daniel before.
But underneath it was a date.
The same date her sister disappeared.
Rebecca pointed at the paper.
“Your husband has been hiding the real reason he came into your life.””
Claire looked at the document.
May you like
And for the first time, she wondered if the broken vase was never the beginning of Daniel’s plan.
Maybe it was just the moment he finally got caught.
