Chapter 3: The Stranger Who Knew the Truth

Claire stared at the photograph until the words on the screen blurred.

Your husband has been lying to you since the day you met him.

The sentence repeated in her mind.

She wanted to dismiss it.

She wanted to believe there was a reasonable explanation.

A misunderstanding.

A coincidence.

Anything.

But the picture made that impossible.

Daniel was standing in the Ashford mansion years before she had ever known him.

Before he became part of their family.

Before he smiled at Maya and promised to protect her.

He had been there before.

And he had never told her.

Claire slowly lowered the phone.

“Where did you get this?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the photograph.

For the first time since she met him, Claire saw something she had never seen before.

Fear.

Not anger.

Not frustration.

Fear.

“Daniel.””

He looked away.

“Claire, you need to stop listening to whoever is sending those messages.””

“That’s your answer?””

“Yes.””

“You’re not going to explain the photo?””

Daniel walked toward the desk and picked up the picture.

“It’s not what you think.””

Claire almost smiled.

Because that was exactly what people said when it was exactly what she thought.

“Then tell me what it is.””

Daniel remained silent.

The silence became an answer.

Claire stepped backward.

“How long have you known about this?””

“Known about what?””

“The mansion. The vase. That photo.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Claire, I didn’t know about the vase.””

“But you knew this house.””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

Too instantly.

Claire crossed her arms.

“Then why are you in that picture?””

Daniel looked down.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Finally, he spoke.

“Years ago, I worked for a company that handled estate properties.””

Claire waited.

“And?””

“And this mansion was one of the properties.””

“That’s all?””

“Yes.””

But something about his voice told her it wasn’t.

Claire had spent years learning Daniel’s expressions.

She knew when he was annoyed.

She knew when he was tired.

She knew when he was pretending everything was fine.

This was different.

This was someone trying to bury something.

Before she could continue, Maya appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Mommy?””

Claire immediately turned.

Her daughter looked small in the oversized pajamas she wore.

“You’re awake.””

Maya nodded.

“I heard voices.””

Claire’s heart broke.

She didn’t want Maya hearing another argument.

Not after everything.

She walked toward her.

“Go back to bed, sweetheart.””

Maya looked past her at Daniel.

The fear returned to her eyes.

Daniel noticed.

And for once, he looked uncomfortable.

“I’m not going to hurt you,” he said.

Maya didn’t respond.

She simply held onto her mother’s hand.

That hurt Claire more than any accusation ever could.

Because Maya didn’t see Daniel as a father figure anymore.

She saw him as someone dangerous.

The next morning, Claire made a decision.

She needed answers.

Not from Daniel.

From someone else.

The unknown sender.

She waited until Maya was at school, then replied.

“Tell me who you are.””

For several minutes, nothing happened.

Then her phone buzzed.

“My name is Rebecca.””

Claire frowned.

The name meant nothing.

“Why should I believe you?””

The response came quickly.

“Because I was there when Daniel learned how to lie.””

Claire stared at the screen.

“What does that mean?””

Another message appeared.

“I was married to him.””

Claire froze.

She read the sentence again.

I was married to him.

The room suddenly felt colder.

Daniel had been married before.

She knew that.

At least, she thought she did.

He had told her his previous relationship ended years before they met.

He had never mentioned another wife.

Not once.

Claire typed:

“You’re his ex-wife?””

“Yes.””

“Why contact me now?””

The reply took longer this time.

Then:

“Because I saw what happened to Maya.””

Claire’s fingers tightened around the phone.

“You were watching us?””

“No. I saw the news about the vase.””

“What news?””

“Your family’s charity event was mentioned online. The broken Ashford vase. The accusation against your daughter.””

Claire felt sick.

Someone outside their family had seen it.

Someone had seen Maya being humiliated.

Rebecca continued.

“I knew exactly what Daniel was doing.””

Claire looked at the photo again.

“Why?””

“Because he did something similar to my son.””

Claire stopped breathing for a moment.

Your son.

The boy in the photograph.

The same boy standing beside Daniel years earlier.

“What happened?””

The reply came after almost a minute.

“Daniel destroyed his reputation.””

Claire sat down.

“Explain.””

A message appeared.

Then another.

And another.

Each one revealing pieces of a past Daniel had buried.

Rebecca explained that when she and Daniel were married, he had always been obsessed with controlling how people saw him.

To outsiders, he was charming.

Helpful.

Generous.

But inside their home, things were different.

He needed to be right.

Always.

If something went wrong, someone else had to be responsible.

Their son, Lucas, had learned that lesson too early.

One night, an expensive watch disappeared from their house.

Daniel accused Lucas.

The boy was only nine.

He cried.

He begged.

He said he didn’t take it.

But Daniel convinced everyone otherwise.

Rebecca believed him.

Until she found the truth.

The watch had been hidden in Daniel’s own office.

The accusation had been a test.

A way to see whether the family would choose him over a child.

Claire stopped reading.

Her hands were shaking.

Because suddenly, the vase was not an accident.

It was a pattern.

She typed:

“Why didn’t you expose him?””

The answer came slowly.

“Because I tried.””

A pause.

“People believed him.””

Claire looked toward the stairs.

Toward Maya’s bedroom.

The same thing had almost happened again.

Rebecca sent one final message.

“I need to meet you.””

Claire hesitated.

“Why?””

“Because I have proof.””

The message was followed by a picture.

It was a document.

An old legal file.

Claire zoomed in.

At the top was Daniel’s name.

And beneath it was a phrase that made her stomach turn.

“Pattern of fabricated accusations and emotional manipulation.””

Claire stared at the screen.

This was bigger than a broken vase.

Much bigger.

But before she could respond, her phone rang.

The caller ID appeared.

Daniel.

Claire looked at the phone.

She didn’t want to answer.

But she did.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then Daniel’s voice.

“Who have you been talking to?””

Claire froze.

“How do you know I’ve been talking to someone?””

Another silence.

A dangerous one.

Then Daniel said quietly:

“Because Rebecca always makes the same mistake.””

Claire’s grip tightened.

“What mistake?””

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“She thinks showing people the truth will save them.””

Claire stood up.

“And what happens when people learn the truth?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“They lose everything.””

The call ended.

Claire stared at the screen.

For a moment, she felt fear.

Not for herself.

For Maya.

Because Daniel wasn’t trying to protect his reputation anymore.

May you like

He was trying to protect a secret.

And somewhere in that secret was the reason he had chosen an innocent eight-year-old girl as the person to destroy.
