Chapter 6: The Letter Emily Left Behind

Claire stood in Maya’s bedroom, holding the envelope so tightly that her fingers began to hurt.

Emily.

Her sister’s handwriting.

The same handwriting Claire remembered from birthday cards, old postcards, and notes left on the kitchen counter when she was younger.

There was no mistaking it.

This wasn’t a copy.

This wasn’t a trick.

This was Emily.

Her sister had written something.

And somehow, eight years after she disappeared, that message had found its way into Maya’s hands.

Daniel stood behind her, completely silent.

That frightened Claire more than anything.

Because Daniel always had something to say.

An excuse.

An explanation.

A carefully prepared answer.

But now?

Nothing.

Claire slowly turned around.

“How did this get here?””

Daniel looked at the envelope.

“I don’t know.””

The answer came too quickly.

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Claire, listen to me.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“No more.””

Maya looked between them, confused and scared.

Claire immediately softened.

“Sweetheart, go wait downstairs with Charlie.””

“But—”

“Please.””

Maya hugged her rabbit and left slowly.

Once the door closed, Claire looked back at Daniel.

“Did Emily give you this?””

“No.””

“Did you know she left something behind?””

“No.””

“Did you know she was coming here?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But Claire saw it.

“You knew.””

Daniel looked away.

“I knew Emily was looking for something.””

Claire froze.

“What?””

Daniel sighed.

“Claire, this is complicated.””

“No.””

She held up the envelope.

“This is my sister’s handwriting. This is my daughter’s bedroom. And my husband has spent years hiding information about both of them.””

Her voice broke.

“So explain.””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“I met Emily years ago.””

“I know.””

“She came to me because she needed help.””

Claire stared.

“Help with what?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said:

“The Ashford family records.””

Claire felt the same cold feeling return.

“The inheritance.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“So Rebecca told you.””

“She told me enough.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Rebecca always tells half a story.””

“Then tell me the other half.””

Daniel looked at the envelope.

“Emily discovered something about your family.””

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

Claire stared at him.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“It’s the truth.””

“You were with her before she disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“You worked at this mansion.””

“Yes.””

“You had access to family documents.””

“Yes.””

“Then how do you not know?””

Daniel said nothing.

Claire stepped closer.

“Because you do know.””

The silence confirmed it.

Daniel looked toward the window.

“When Emily came to me, she believed someone in your family had hidden something.””

“Someone?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I never found out.””

Claire almost laughed.

“You expect me to believe you were just some innocent person helping my sister?””

Daniel looked hurt.

“I did help her.””

“Then why did she disappear?””

His face changed.

And Claire noticed something.

Pain.

Real pain.

For the first time, she wondered if Daniel was hiding something more complicated than she imagined.

But she quickly pushed that thought away.

Because whatever his reasons were, he had still hurt Maya.

He had still lied.

He had still allowed an innocent child to suffer.

Claire opened the envelope.

Inside was a folded letter.

The paper was old.

The edges were worn.

Like it had been carried somewhere for years.

She began reading.

Claire,

If you are reading this, it means someone finally found the truth.

I’m sorry.

I’m sorry I left without explaining.

I’m sorry I let you believe I abandoned you.

I never wanted you to think that.

Claire’s vision blurred.

Her sister’s words felt like a voice from the past.

Emily continued.

I discovered something about our family that I was not supposed to know. Something that involved the Ashford collection and a person who had been trying to enter our family for years.

Claire stopped reading.

She looked at Daniel.

He was staring at the letter.

His face had gone pale.

The letter continued.

The person you need to be careful of is not who everyone thinks.

He will make himself look helpful.

He will make himself look like the victim.

But he has already hurt people before.

Claire’s breath caught.

She looked at Daniel.

The same words Rebecca had used.

The same pattern.

The same warning.

The letter continued.

I found proof. I hid it somewhere only you would understand.

Not Mom.

Not Dad.

You.

Because you were the only person I trusted completely.

Claire covered her mouth.

A memory suddenly returned.

She and Emily as children.

A secret hiding place.

A place only they knew.

Behind the old fireplace in their grandfather’s study.

They used to hide toys there.

Letters.

Small treasures.

Emily had always called it “the safe place.””

The letter continued.

But if Daniel is still in your life when you read this, do not trust him with the truth.

Claire stopped.

Daniel looked away.

There it was.

The warning.

Written eight years earlier.

Before Maya was blamed.

Before the vase broke.

Before Claire knew anything.

Her sister had known.

She had known Daniel was dangerous.

A sound came from downstairs.

A door closing.

Claire looked up.

“Did someone come in?””

Daniel immediately became alert.

“What?””

They rushed downstairs.

The front door was slightly open.

Cold air moved through the entrance.

Claire looked around.

“Maya?””

No answer.

Her heart stopped.

“Maya!””

A second later, Maya appeared from the hallway.

“I’m here.””

Claire ran to her and hugged her.

“What happened?””

Maya pointed toward the table.

“There was another envelope.””

Claire looked.

A second envelope sat beside the first one.

But this one was not old.

It was new.

Fresh.

Someone had placed it there minutes ago.

Daniel saw it.

And his entire expression changed.

Claire noticed.

“You know what that is.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

She picked it up.

The front had Maya’s name written on it.

Not Claire’s.

Maya’s.

Claire opened it carefully.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph of Emily.

Alive.

Standing outside a building.

And beside her was a man.

Claire recognized him instantly.

Because he was the one person she never expected to see.

Daniel.

But that wasn’t the worst part.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

The date was two years after Emily had supposedly disappeared.

Claire stared at the picture.

Her hands began shaking.

“She was alive.””

Daniel said nothing.

Claire turned toward him.

“You knew.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then why are you crying?””

Daniel froze.

Because he hadn’t noticed.

But tears were running down his face.

For the first time, he didn’t look like a man protecting a secret.

He looked like someone who had lost something.

Claire held up the photograph.

“Where is my sister?””

Daniel whispered:

“I thought she was dead.””

Before Claire could respond, the lights suddenly went out.

The mansion fell into darkness.

Maya screamed.

Claire grabbed her daughter.

Then, from somewhere inside the house, they heard a sound.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Someone was walking through the darkness.

Daniel reached for his phone.

Claire held her breath.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

A voice none of them expected.

“Claire?””

The lights flickered back on.

And standing at the entrance of the living room was a woman Claire had not seen in eight years.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

Emily.

Her missing sister.

Alive.

And the first words she spoke were not an explanation.

Not an apology.

Not a greeting.

May you like

She looked directly at Daniel and said:

“You were never supposed to find me.””
