Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Plan
The video kept playing.
But nobody in the ballroom moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because the voice coming from the speakers belonged to someone Marcus had trusted for years.
Someone who had been welcomed into his home.
Someone who had been there when his family was at its most vulnerable.
Richard.
But he wasn’t alone.
The second person on the recording stepped closer to the hidden camera.
The image was blurry.
The lighting was poor.
Yet there was no mistaking the voice.
“I still don’t understand why we need to wait,” the person said.
Marcus’s face became pale.
Because he knew that voice.
I knew it too.
Everyone did.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“No…”
The person on the screen was not a stranger.
It was someone from Marcus’s past.
Someone who had always acted like family.
Someone who had spent years standing beside him.
Marcus whispered:
“Ethan.””
The room erupted.
A man near the back of the ballroom immediately looked down.
Ethan.
Marcus’s childhood friend.
His business partner.
The person who had helped him after Emily died.
The person who had told him he would always protect Zoe.
The person who had held his hand at the funeral.
The person who had said:
“Marcus, you don’t have to do this alone.””
Now his voice was on a recording about taking control of Zoe’s inheritance.
Marcus turned slowly.
Ethan stood frozen.
Everyone looked at him.
“Say something,” Marcus said.
Ethan didn’t move.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
Marcus’s voice was quiet.
“Don’t say my name like you still have the right.””
Ethan swallowed.
“You don’t understand.””
A bitter laugh escaped Marcus.
“That sentence again?””
He looked around the room.
“Is that all everyone says when they get caught?””
Ethan stepped forward.
“I can explain.””
“You have one chance.””
The room became silent.
“Explain.””
Ethan looked at the screen.
Then at Vanessa.
Then back at Marcus.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.””
Marcus stared.
“What wasn’t?””
“The wedding.””
A chill went through me.
Ethan continued.
“The plan was never to hurt Zoe.””
I looked at him.
“Then why was she accused?””
His eyes moved toward Vanessa.
And Vanessa looked away.
That told everyone enough.
Marcus noticed too.
“You used her.””
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You convinced her there was a way to control Zoe’s inheritance.””
Ethan didn’t answer.
“You found her insecurity.””
Silence.
“You told her she could become the person in charge.””
Still silence.
“And then you watched her destroy my daughter.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
For the first time, he looked ashamed.
But it was too late.
Vanessa suddenly turned toward him.
“You said nobody would get hurt.””
Everyone looked at her.
Ethan’s face hardened.
“Vanessa.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You said Marcus would never find out.””
Marcus looked between them.
“So you admit there was a plan.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I didn’t know what he was really doing.””
Ethan laughed quietly.
“Don’t pretend you were innocent.””
Her face turned toward him.
“You told me you were helping me.””
“I was.””
“You said Marcus would eventually understand.””
“And you believed me.””
Vanessa looked destroyed.
Because that was the truth.
She had been manipulated.
But she had also chosen to participate.
Marcus shook his head.
“I don’t understand.””
He looked at Ethan.
“Why?””
That one question carried years of friendship.
Why?
Why would someone who had stood beside him betray him?
Ethan looked away.
“Because you had everything.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
“You had the perfect life.””
Ethan’s voice became bitter.
“You had Emily. You had a daughter. You had a successful company. Everyone trusted you.””
“That’s why?””
“No.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“That’s why I knew you wouldn’t notice.””
The words were cold.
Marcus stared.
“Notice what?””
Ethan laughed.
“You never saw me.””
The room became quiet.
“I was always there.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You were my best friend.””
“Exactly.””
Ethan’s face tightened.
“I was always the one helping you.””
“You helped me because I trusted you.””
“And you never wondered why I knew so much?””
Marcus said nothing.
Ethan continued.
“I knew your finances. I knew your business. I knew your family.””
My stomach turned.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
Information.
Access.
Documents.
Richard.
Vanessa.
All connected.
Marcus looked at the USB drive.
“You used Emily’s trust.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“She was smart.””
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“What did you do?””
Ethan looked away.
“That’s enough.””
“No.””
Marcus’s voice became stronger.
“You’re going to tell me.””
Ethan didn’t answer.
So Daniel played the rest of the recording.
The hidden camera showed Richard and Ethan sitting in an office.
Vanessa was not there.
Richard spoke first.
“Once the marriage is complete, everything becomes easier.””
Ethan nodded.
“She trusts him.””
Richard smiled.
“That’s the point.””
The room went cold.
Marcus stared at the screen.
Richard continued:
“Marcus is emotional. He wants a family. He wants to believe people are good.””
Ethan replied:
“And Zoe?””
Richard leaned back.
“She’s a child.””
The words made everyone uncomfortable.
“She won’t understand what’s happening.””
I felt anger rise.
But the recording continued.
Ethan asked:
“What about Emily?””
Richard smiled.
“She’s gone.””
The entire room froze.
Marcus’s hand tightened around the table.
Daniel paused the video.
Nobody spoke.
Because that sentence carried something darker.
Not just a plan.
Not just greed.
Something cruel.
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“What did he mean?””
Ethan looked terrified.
“I didn’t know.””
“You were there.””
“I didn’t know he thought that.””
“You were planning with him.””
Ethan looked down.
“I thought it was only about money.””
Marcus stepped back.
“And Emily?””
Ethan said nothing.
That silence was terrifying.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“You knew.””
Everyone turned.
She looked at Ethan.
“You knew something about Emily.””
Ethan’s face changed.
Vanessa continued.
“You told me she was the reason everything was complicated.””
Marcus stared.
“What did you say?””
Ethan looked trapped.
Marcus’s voice dropped.
“What did you know about my wife?””
Ethan shook his head.
“Nothing.””
“Lie.””
Marcus moved closer.
“You knew about the inheritance before Emily died.””
Ethan stayed silent.
“And you knew she was investigating someone.””
Still silent.
The truth was coming out.
Piece by piece.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Everyone looked at him.
He answered.
“Yes?””
His expression changed.
“What?””
A pause.
Then he looked at Marcus.
“The police are here.””
Nobody moved.
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
Daniel swallowed.
“They received a report.””
“About what?””
Daniel looked toward Ethan.
And then Vanessa.
“About Emily’s death.””
The room became completely still.
Marcus’s face changed.
Because for two years, he had believed he lost his wife in an accident.
But now…
After everything that had been revealed…
One terrifying possibility entered his mind.
“What report?””
Daniel looked at his phone.
“Someone anonymously submitted evidence.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“What evidence?””
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Evidence that Emily’s accident may not have been an accident.””
The ballroom went silent.
And then the doors opened.
Two officers walked inside.
One of them looked directly at Marcus.
“Mr. Carter?””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Yes?””
The officer held out a folder.
“We need to ask you some questions.””
“About what?””
The officer looked at Ethan.
Then Vanessa.
May you like
Then back at Marcus.
“About who wanted your wife gone.””
