Chapter 5: The Message From the Past

Nobody spoke.

Not because they had nothing to say.

Because the impossible had just entered the room.

Zoe’s mother had been gone for two years.

Yet somehow, her name was now on a file connected to the biggest betrayal of Marcus’s life.

A woman who wasn’t there had just changed everything.

Daniel looked uncomfortable holding the phone.

“I didn’t open the file,” he said.

“The security manager only told me the name attached to it.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Show me.””

Daniel hesitated.

“Are you sure?””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

Daniel connected his phone again.

The screen changed.

The wedding decorations disappeared.

The smiling faces from earlier were replaced by a simple file folder.

At the top was a name.

*Emily Carter.*

Zoe’s mother.

Marcus stopped breathing for a second.

I watched him stare at the screen like he was seeing a ghost.

Nobody in the room knew what to do.

Even Vanessa, who had been preparing to leave, stood frozen near the exit.

Because whatever was inside that file mattered.

Everyone could feel it.

Daniel opened it.

A video appeared.

The date was two years earlier.

Three days before Emily’s accident.

Marcus took a step back.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“Where did you get this?””

Daniel looked at him.

“The hotel security archive.””

“Why would the hotel have a video from two years ago?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

The screen flickered.

Then Emily appeared.

She was sitting in a quiet room.

Alive.

Smiling.

For a moment, Marcus couldn’t move.

Zoe stared at the screen.

“Mommy?””

The word was so soft that everyone heard it.

Marcus immediately turned toward her.

Zoe’s eyes were locked on the image.

She had seen pictures.

She had heard stories.

But she had not heard her mother’s voice in years.

Emily looked directly into the camera.

“Hi, Zoe.””

The little girl covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Because hearing her voice again was something he never expected.

The video continued.

“I don’t know when you’ll watch this,” Emily said.

“Maybe you’ll be older. Maybe you’ll understand things I can’t explain yet.””

She smiled sadly.

“But if you’re watching this, it means something happened.””

Marcus looked confused.

Emily continued.

“I need you to remember one thing.””

The room became completely silent.

“You are loved.””

Zoe started crying.

I wrapped my arm around her.

Emily looked down for a moment.

Then she said:

“And I need your father to listen carefully too.””

Marcus stepped closer.

The message was no longer just for Zoe.

It was for him.

“Marcus, if you’re watching this, I need you to know that I trusted you with everything.””

His eyes filled.

“I trusted you with our daughter.””

A tear rolled down his face.

“I know you will protect her.””

The words seemed to hurt him.

Because tonight, he had almost failed that promise.

Emily continued.

“But there is something I never told you.””

Everyone leaned closer.

“Before I died, I found out someone was trying to access Zoe’s inheritance.””

The room changed.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She immediately looked away.

Emily continued.

“I didn’t know who it was at first.””

The video showed Emily holding a document.

“But I knew someone was asking questions they shouldn’t have been asking.””

Marcus whispered:

“Oh my God.””

Emily looked directly into the camera.

“Marcus, please don’t assume it was someone obvious.””

A strange sentence.

Everyone noticed.

“Sometimes the person who smiles at you the most is the person who wants something from you.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

The message continued.

“I created a protection plan for Zoe. If anyone tries to become her guardian or gain control over her assets, this recording should be shown.””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“She knew.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was filled with disbelief.

“She knew something like this could happen?””

Emily continued.

“I hope I’m wrong.””

She looked down.

“I hope whoever is watching this proves me wrong.””

The room was silent.

Because Emily wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t accusing.

She sounded afraid.

And that was worse.

The video continued.

“There is one more thing.””

Emily reached toward the camera.

The recording became slightly blurry.

“I left a sealed letter with my attorney.””

Marcus frowned.

“Attorney?””

The same word that had appeared before.

Daniel looked at him.

“Your attorney?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

Emily continued.

“The letter can only be opened if someone attempts to challenge Zoe’s rights.””

Then she paused.

“And Marcus…”

Her voice softened.

“If you ever find yourself doubting Zoe, watch this part again.””

Marcus looked down.

Because those words were meant for tonight.

Exactly tonight.

Emily’s final sentence was almost a whisper.

“She is a child. She should never have to prove she deserves to be believed.””

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

The silence afterward was heavier than before.

Then Zoe whispered:

“I miss Mommy.””

Marcus broke.

He dropped to his knees in front of her.

“I know.””

She touched his face.

“Did Mommy know I was a good girl?””

Marcus grabbed her hands.

“She knew.””

“How?””

“Because she knew you better than anyone.””

Zoe cried.

And for the first time that night, Marcus cried too.

Not as a groom.

Not as a husband.

As a father.

Behind them, Vanessa spoke.

“She planned this.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa was standing near the door.

Her face was unreadable.

“She planned all of this before she died.””

Marcus slowly stood.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying Emily was always suspicious.””

“And?””

“And she made you afraid.””

Marcus stared.

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She made you believe everyone was a threat.””

I stepped forward.

“No. She protected her daughter.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“You don’t know what happened between them.””

“You’re right.””

I looked at Zoe.

“But I know what happened tonight.””

Vanessa looked away.

For once, she had no response.

Then Marcus asked:

“How did you know about the inheritance?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She looked exhausted.

“I found documents.””

“Where?””

“At your house.””

Marcus frowned.

“My house?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

She hesitated.

“Months ago.””

The room went cold.

“You searched my house?””

“No.””

“You went through private documents?””

“I was trying to understand my future.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

There was no humor in it.

“My future?””

“Our future.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You were planning it before we even married.””

Vanessa’s silence confirmed everything.

Then Daniel’s phone rang again.

This time, he answered immediately.

“Yes?””

He listened.

Then his eyes widened.

“What?””

Marcus looked worried.

“What now?””

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

“The attorney’s office confirmed something.””

“What?””

“The sealed letter exists.””

Marcus took a breath.

“Where is it?””

Daniel looked at him.

“It was delivered this morning.””

“To who?””

Daniel looked down at the message.

Then back up.

“It was delivered to the bride.””

Everyone turned toward Vanessa.

Her face went pale.

Marcus stared.

“Why would Emily’s attorney send Zoe’s protection letter to you?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She couldn’t.

Because now everyone knew the question that mattered.

Not what was inside the letter.

But why Vanessa had it.

And why she had been hiding it.

Then Daniel received one final message.

He read it silently.

His expression changed.

“Marcus…”

“What?””

Daniel looked terrified.

“The attorney said the letter contains evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Evidence that someone close to this family tried to take Zoe’s inheritance before the wedding.””

A pause.

Then he added:

“And Emily recorded the person’s name.””
