Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Wedding

The words hung in the ballroom like a warning.

“Vanessa wasn’t planning to just frame Zoe.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody even whispered.

The guests who had spent the last hour comforting Vanessa were now staring at her as if they were seeing a stranger.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel glanced down at his phone.

“The hotel security manager sent me a message. He said there was unusual activity near the bridal suite yesterday afternoon.””

Vanessa’s expression changed instantly.

“No.””

It was barely audible.

But everyone heard it.

Marcus turned toward her.

“Why would you say no before we even know what the footage shows?””

She looked trapped.

“I just mean… this is getting ridiculous.””

Daniel shook his head.

“It’s not ridiculous.””

He held up his phone.

“The security team reviewed the footage after I asked them about the hallway recording. They found something.””

I stepped closer.

“What something?””

Daniel looked at Zoe.

Then at Marcus.

“Something that explains why Vanessa wanted the ring to disappear.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“Play it.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Marcus, don’t.””

The room went silent again.

Because this time, everyone noticed.

She wasn’t asking.

She was afraid.

Daniel connected his phone to the ballroom screen.

The display changed.

The wedding photos disappeared.

A security camera view appeared.

The date at the top showed the previous afternoon.

The camera faced the hallway outside the bridal suite.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then Vanessa appeared.

She was carrying a folder.

Not a purse.

Not a makeup bag.

A folder.

She looked around before entering the room.

A few guests exchanged looks.

Marcus watched without blinking.

The footage continued.

Vanessa entered the bridal suite.

Ten minutes passed.

Then twenty.

Then the door opened.

Vanessa walked out.

But she wasn’t carrying the folder anymore.

Marcus frowned.

“Where did it go?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel switched to another camera.

This one showed the hallway from a different angle.

The room watched as Vanessa walked to a small office near the ballroom.

She looked over her shoulder.

Then entered.

A few moments later, she came back out.

This time, she was holding a stack of papers.

My stomach tightened.

“What are those?””

Daniel looked at his phone.

“We don’t know yet.””

Vanessa suddenly shouted.

“Turn it off.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice echoed through the ballroom.

“I said turn it off.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Marcus walked closer.

“Why are you scared of a video?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

“You’re really going to do this? In front of all these people?””

“You did something to my daughter in front of all these people.””

Her face changed.

For the first time, Marcus wasn’t protecting her.

He was protecting Zoe.

The difference was obvious.

Vanessa looked around.

“I made one mistake.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

She looked at him.

“You don’t know me.””

“No,” Daniel replied.

“But cameras do.””

A few people murmured.

Vanessa’s hands tightened around her bouquet.

Then she turned toward me.

“This is what you wanted, isn’t it?””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“To ruin me.””

I almost laughed.

The accusation was unbelievable.

“You accused my daughter of stealing.””

“You never accepted me.””

“You tried to destroy a six-year-old child.””

Her expression became cold.

“I tried to protect my marriage.””

The words shocked everyone.

Marcus stared.

“Protect it from what?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“From the fact that you’ll never move on.””

Silence.

Even Zoe looked up.

Marcus’s face changed.

Because now the conversation had moved somewhere deeper.

Somewhere painful.

His first wife.

Zoe’s mother.

A woman we rarely mentioned because the wound was still there.

Vanessa continued.

“You still keep her pictures.””

Marcus said nothing.

“You still talk about her.””

“Because she was Zoe’s mother.””

“But she’s gone.””

The room became uncomfortable.

I felt anger rise inside me.

Not because Vanessa was jealous.

People have insecurities.

People have fears.

But she had turned those feelings into a weapon against a child.

Marcus shook his head slowly.

“You were jealous of my daughter because she reminded me of her mother?””

“No.””

Vanessa looked away.

Then back.

“I was jealous because no matter what I did, I was never enough.””

Marcus’s voice was quiet.

“Then you should have left.””

“I loved you.””

“No.””

The word was simple.

Final.

“You loved the idea of being chosen.””

Vanessa looked wounded.

But before she could respond, Daniel interrupted.

“There’s more.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I didn’t want to show this part without Marcus knowing.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Show me.””

Daniel pressed play.

The security footage changed.

The screen showed the office Vanessa had entered.

The camera angle was not perfect.

But it showed enough.

Vanessa sitting at a desk.

Opening the folder.

Pulling out documents.

She placed them on the table.

Then she took out her phone.

She made a call.

The audio was unclear.

Daniel increased the volume.

A faint voice came through.

“Did you get it?””

Vanessa looked toward the door.

“Yes.””

“What about the signature?””

“Almost.””

Marcus suddenly stepped forward.

“Stop.””

Daniel paused.

Everyone looked at him.

His face had gone pale.

“What is it?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He was staring at the screen.

“Play it again.””

Daniel replayed the audio.

“Did you get it?””

“Yes.””

“What about the signature?””

“Almost.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Because he recognized the voice.

“Who was she talking to?”” I asked.

Marcus didn’t respond.

“Marcus?””

He looked at Vanessa.

And this time, his disappointment was worse than his anger.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Answer me.””

Her silence was enough.

Marcus turned toward Daniel.

“Can you identify the number?””

Daniel nodded.

“I asked security for the phone records.””

He looked at his screen.

“The number belongs to…”

He stopped.

“Who?”” Marcus demanded.

Daniel hesitated.

Then said:

“Your attorney.””

The ballroom erupted.

“What?””

“Why would her attorney be involved?””

“Is this about money?””

The questions came from every direction.

Vanessa’s face became completely blank.

Marcus looked at her.

“My attorney?””

She whispered.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

His voice cut through the room.

“Don’t explain yet.””

He walked toward the screen.

“Show the documents.””

Daniel switched back to the footage.

Vanessa was seen placing papers on the desk.

The camera zoomed in slightly.

The words were blurry.

But one line was visible.

A name.

Marcus saw it.

And he stopped breathing.

Because it wasn’t a wedding document.

It wasn’t a ring receipt.

It wasn’t anything related to the ceremony.

It was a legal document.

With Zoe’s name printed across the top.

My heart dropped.

“What does it say?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He was staring at Vanessa.

“What were you trying to take from my daughter?””

Vanessa finally broke.

Not crying.

Not pretending.

Angry.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked around the room.

At the guests.

At the cameras.

At everyone who had watched her perfect wedding collapse.

Then she looked at Zoe.

And said something that made my blood run cold.

“I wasn’t trying to take anything from her.””

A pause.

“I was trying to make sure she could never take anything from me.””

Zoe moved closer to me.

May you like

And Marcus whispered the question nobody wanted to ask.

“What did you sign?””
