Chapter 6: The Name Hidden in the Letter

Nobody looked at Vanessa anymore like she was a bride.

They looked at her like she was the final piece of a puzzle nobody wanted to solve.

Because everyone already knew what the letter meant.

Emily had prepared for this.

She had known someone might try to take advantage of Zoe.

And now the question was no longer whether Vanessa had done something wrong.

The question was how far she had planned to go.

Marcus stood in the center of the ballroom, surrounded by flowers, wedding decorations, and guests who had arrived to celebrate his marriage.

But the wedding was gone.

All that remained was the truth.

“Where is the letter?”” Marcus asked.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Vanessa noticed.

She knew that calm was more dangerous than anger.

The old Marcus would have shouted.

The old Marcus would have demanded answers immediately.

But this Marcus was different.

This was a father who had watched his daughter be humiliated.

A father who had heard his late wife’s final warning.

Daniel looked at his phone.

“The attorney said the letter was delivered to Vanessa because she was listed as the emergency contact for the wedding arrangements.””

Marcus frowned.

“Emergency contact?””

Daniel nodded.

“She was helping coordinate legal paperwork for the ceremony.””

Vanessa quickly spoke.

“Exactly.””

Everyone looked at her.

She straightened.

“This proves nothing.””

Her confidence was returning.

Small pieces of it.

“I received a sealed letter. I didn’t open it.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Do you expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

“I do.””

I watched her carefully.

She was not crying anymore.

Not pretending to be hurt.

She was calculating.

That was what scared me.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Then give it to me.””

Vanessa didn’t move.

A few seconds passed.

Everyone noticed.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“I can’t.””

The room reacted instantly.

A wave of whispers moved through the guests.

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“Why?””

“Because it’s private.””

“It’s about my daughter.””

“It was written by Emily.””

“And?””

“And you don’t know what she wanted.””

Marcus stared at her.

“She made a plan to protect Zoe.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. She made a plan because she didn’t trust anyone.””

I felt anger rise.

But before I could respond, Zoe spoke.

“Mommy trusted Daddy.””

Everyone became quiet.

Vanessa looked at her.

The little girl who had spent the entire night being treated like a problem.

Zoe held her stuffed rabbit against her chest.

“She told me Daddy always keeps promises.””

Marcus looked away.

The pain on his face was impossible to miss.

Because he knew exactly why those words hurt.

He had almost broken that promise.

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

Then she sighed.

“Fine.””

She reached into her purse.

The ballroom became silent.

She pulled out a white envelope.

Marcus stared.

“You had it the whole time?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I was going to give it to you.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Marcus took the envelope from her hand.

The name written on the front was simple.

*For Marcus. Only after Zoe’s rights are threatened.*

His fingers shook slightly.

Because Emily’s handwriting was familiar.

Too familiar.

He had not seen it in years.

He touched the paper like it was something fragile.

Then he opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Several pages.

Marcus read the first line.

And immediately froze.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“Marcus?””

He didn’t respond.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he whispered:

“She knew.””

Daniel frowned.

“Knew what?””

Marcus looked up.

“Emily knew Vanessa was asking about Zoe’s inheritance.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“No.””

Marcus kept reading.

“She wrote that someone had been trying to convince her that Zoe needed a different guardian.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s not true.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You talked to Emily.””

It wasn’t a question.

Vanessa said nothing.

“You talked to my wife before she died.””

Her lips parted.

“I…”

“When?””

Vanessa looked around.

Everyone was watching.

“Answer me.””

She swallowed.

“Once.””

“When?””

“A few weeks before her accident.””

The words felt heavy.

Marcus looked like he had been punched.

“Why?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

But this time, nobody rushed to comfort her.

“I wanted to understand your family.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You wanted information.””

“That’s not fair.””

“What did you ask her?””

Vanessa stayed silent.

Marcus looked at the letter.

Then back at her.

“What did you ask my wife?””

Vanessa’s voice became quiet.

“I asked if she would ever consider letting someone else help raise Zoe.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“You asked her to replace herself?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Vanessa looked frustrated.

“I asked if she thought you were capable of handling everything alone.””

Marcus looked devastated.

Because that was not a conversation anyone had the right to have.

Especially with a dying woman.

Emily’s letter continued.

Marcus read silently for another moment.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

I asked.

He looked at me.

“She wrote a name.””

Everyone held their breath.

“Whose name?””

Marcus looked down again.

His hand tightened around the letter.

Then he said:

“Richard.””

Vanessa went completely still.

Daniel looked confused.

“Who is Richard?””

Marcus looked at him.

“My attorney.””

The room erupted again.

The same attorney who had been on the phone with Vanessa.

The same attorney connected to the hidden documents.

The same attorney who apparently knew about Emily’s concerns.

Marcus kept reading.

Then he stopped.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

“Marcus?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“What did Richard promise you?””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“I don’t know what you mean.””

“Emily wrote that Richard told you he could help you gain control of Zoe’s assets.””

The room became silent.

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s impossible.””

“You knew.””

“No.””

“You knew exactly what the guardianship papers were.””

“No!””

For the first time, Vanessa sounded genuinely afraid.

Not because she had been exposed.

Because something else had happened.

Something she did not expect.

Marcus noticed.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I didn’t create those papers.””

Nobody spoke.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“I thought Richard was helping me with something else.””

Marcus stared.

“Something else?””

“I thought…”

She stopped.

“Thought what?””

Vanessa looked at the letter.

Then at Zoe.

Her voice lowered.

“I thought he was helping me protect myself.””

The answer confused everyone.

Marcus frowned.

“Protect yourself from what?””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

Then Daniel’s phone rang again.

This time, he didn’t answer immediately.

He looked at the screen.

Then his face changed.

“What is it?”” Marcus asked.

Daniel swallowed.

“It’s from the attorney’s office.””

“Richard?””

Daniel nodded.

“What did he say?””

Daniel turned the phone around.

There was a message.

Only one sentence.

But it changed everything.

*Do not open Emily’s second letter.*

Marcus stared.

“Second letter?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“There’s another one.””

My heart sank.

“Where?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

And everyone followed his eyes.

Because the message continued.

*The second letter is with the person Emily trusted least.*

The ballroom went silent.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

But Vanessa wasn’t looking at him.

She was looking at Zoe.

And for the first time that night…

she looked afraid of the little girl.

May you like

Not because Zoe had done anything wrong.

But because Zoe was carrying the one thing Vanessa had never been able to control.
