Chapter 8: The Evidence My Wife Tried to Bury
For a long moment, I couldn't move.
Vanessa had signed a document claiming to establish Chloe's paternity. She had used that document to support a guardianship petition against me, and she had apparently done so with the help of her mother.
But why would Vanessa forge a paternity report?
If the document was false, then the story about Emily's secret relationship might also be false.
I looked at Michael.
"Are you certain?""
"No. I said the signature appears to belong to Vanessa. A handwriting expert will need to verify it. But the laboratory has confirmed that the report was not issued by them.""
"How did Vanessa get Emily's medical records?""
Michael folded his hands.
"That's one of the questions we need to answer. Emily authorized me to retain her estate documents, but her medical records were handled by a separate provider. Someone may have accessed them without permission.""
I stared at the photograph again.
Emily and the unidentified man stood outside the hospital, both smiling at something beyond the frame.
There was no obvious reason for Patricia to believe he was Chloe's father.
Unless she had been given information that made the assumption seem plausible.
"Who is the man in the photograph?"" I asked.
Michael hesitated.
"His name is Andrew Whitmore.""
I blinked.
"Whitmore? Patricia's family?""
"Andrew was Patricia's younger brother.""
I leaned back in my chair.
"Was?""
"He died several years ago. Before Chloe was born.""
I looked at the photograph again.
Emily's expression seemed softer than I had remembered. She was standing close to Andrew, but not in a way that suggested an affair. They looked like old friends.
"Why did Emily know him?""
"They were friends before she met you. Andrew worked in financial compliance and helped Emily investigate irregularities involving a family trust.""
"What irregularities?""
Michael opened another folder.
"Money had been transferred from an account associated with Patricia's family. Andrew suspected the transfers were unauthorized. Emily helped him document them.""
I stared at him.
"You're saying Patricia was stealing from her own family?""
"I'm saying Andrew believed someone had misused the trust. Emily kept copies of several records because she was afraid they would disappear.""
"Did she ever tell me?""
Michael shook his head.
"She planned to, but then she became ill. She didn't want to burden you with a complicated legal dispute while she was receiving treatment.""
I felt a wave of frustration.
Emily had tried to protect everyone by keeping secrets.
And those secrets had become weapons in the hands of people who knew how to use them.
"What happened to Andrew?""
"He died in a car accident. Patricia inherited control of several family assets afterward.""
"And now she wants control of Chloe's trust.""
Michael nodded.
"That's our working concern. But we need evidence connecting the two matters before making any allegations.""
I leaned forward.
"Then let's find it.""
Michael removed a final document from the folder.
"This is a list of people who accessed Emily's estate records after her death. Your name appears, of course. So does mine. But there's another entry that may interest you.""
He turned the page.
A name was highlighted in yellow.
Vanessa Carter.
I stared at it.
"When?""
"Eight months ago.""
My stomach tightened.
Vanessa had been my wife for almost two years by then. She had been living in my house, helping Chloe with homework, and telling me how much she loved my daughter.
At some point during that period, she had contacted Emily's attorney and requested access to confidential estate records.
"How did she get permission?""
"She didn't. The request was denied.""
"Then why is her name here?""
"Because someone later attempted to access the same records using credentials associated with your sister.""
Lauren.
Again.
I stood up and walked toward the window.
"Did Lauren know?""
"I can't say. But the access attempt occurred two days after she visited my office to discuss her own estate planning.""
I closed my eyes.
Patricia had been moving through my family like a shadow, using one person's trust to gain access to another person's secrets.
First Lauren.
Then Vanessa.
And now Chloe.
I turned back toward Michael.
"What did Emily want me to know about Patricia?""
He slid another page across the table.
It contained a short handwritten note.
Patricia believes that if she controls the story, she controls the people involved. Do not argue with her version of events. Find the original records.
I read it twice.
Then I understood why Emily had left the photograph.
The man in it wasn't Chloe's biological father.
He was the person Patricia feared because he had evidence of something Patricia wanted buried.
But Andrew was dead.
Whatever he had discovered might have disappeared with him.
Unless Emily had kept copies.
"Do you have the original financial records?"" I asked.
Michael nodded.
"Some. The rest were transferred to Andrew's estate after his death.""
"Who manages that estate?""
"His former business partner. A man named Samuel Reed.""
I wrote the name down.
Then my phone rang.
Susan.
I answered immediately.
"Daniel, where are you?""
"With Michael Bennett.""
"Good. I've just received a message from the investigating officer. Vanessa has contacted the school and claimed that Chloe is being withheld from her unlawfully.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Chloe is my daughter. Vanessa has no authority to take her anywhere without proper legal arrangements.""
"I agree, but we need to respond through the correct channels. The officer has advised that the school be given written confirmation of the situation, including the current parental arrangements.""
"Do it.""
"I also need to tell you something else. Patricia has filed a request for an emergency hearing.""
I stared at Michael.
"When?""
"Tomorrow morning.""
My stomach dropped.
"On what grounds?""
"She's claiming that Chloe's emotional condition requires immediate intervention and that you're preventing your wife from providing care.""
I let out a humorless laugh.
"She's using the distress she caused as evidence against me.""
"That's what it appears to be. But we need to be careful about how we describe it. We'll submit the recordings, school records, and witness statements. I want you to bring Chloe's notes to my office as soon as possible.""
"I will.""
After the call, I turned to Michael.
"I need to get home.""
He nodded.
"Take copies of these documents. I'll retain the originals and arrange for an independent review.""
He handed me a sealed envelope.
"Emily left one final instruction. She wanted you to give this to Chloe when she was old enough to understand it.""
I held the envelope carefully.
"What's inside?""
"I don't know. She asked me not to open it.""
I slipped it into my briefcase.
Then I asked the question that had been bothering me since I arrived.
"Why did Emily write that Patricia believed Andrew was Chloe's father?""
Michael looked down at the table.
"Because Patricia once accused Emily of having an affair with him. Emily denied it, and there was never any credible evidence supporting the allegation.""
"Then why would Patricia continue spreading it?""
Michael's answer was quiet.
"Because if she could make people doubt Chloe's parentage, she could create uncertainty about the trust. And uncertainty can be useful when someone wants to challenge an inheritance.""
I left his office with more questions than answers.
But I also had something I hadn't possessed the previous day.
Proof that Vanessa's paternity report was not authentic.
Proof that Emily had anticipated an attempt to interfere with Chloe's inheritance.
And a possible connection between Patricia's financial history and the documents she had been hiding.
It wasn't enough to resolve everything.
But it was enough to fight back.
When I arrived home, Chloe was sitting at the kitchen table with Marcus.
She had a bowl of cereal in front of her, and for the first time since I had seen her on the security camera, she was eating without looking over her shoulder.
When she saw me, she jumped out of her chair.
"Daddy!""
I caught her in my arms.
"Hey, baby.""
She hugged me tightly, then stepped back to inspect my face.
"Are you staying home now?""
I knelt.
"For as long as you need me.""
"Even if you have a meeting?""
"Even then.""
She nodded, apparently satisfied.
Then she looked toward the front window.
"Is Vanessa coming back?""
I chose my words carefully.
"Not today. And nobody is going to make you leave with anyone without making sure you're safe.""
Chloe lowered her eyes.
"She said I had to go with her because she's my mother now.""
I felt anger rise, but I kept my voice calm.
"Vanessa is my wife, but that doesn't mean she can replace your mother. Emily will always be your mother.""
Chloe's eyes filled with tears.
"Can I keep Mom's picture in my room?""
"Of course.""
"And her rabbit?""
I hesitated.
The stuffed rabbit was still among the bags of Emily's belongings.
"We'll get it back.""
Chloe nodded.
Then she whispered, "Can I tell you something without you getting mad?""
I took both her hands.
"Always.""
"Vanessa told me that if I talked about what happened, she would tell everyone that you weren't my real dad. She said people would laugh at me because I didn't know who my real father was.""
I swallowed hard.
"Did she ever tell you who she thought it was?""
Chloe shook her head.
"She said Grandma had papers that proved it.""
I exchanged a glance with Marcus.
"Did you ever see those papers?""
"Only once. Vanessa showed me a picture on her phone. There was a man in it, but I didn't know him.""
I pulled the photograph of Emily and Andrew from my briefcase.
"Was it this man?""
Chloe studied the picture.
Then she shook her head.
"No.""
My heart began to pound.
"You're sure?""
She pointed at Andrew.
"That man was in the photograph Vanessa showed me, but he was standing next to Grandma. Not Mom.""
I stared at the picture.
Emily and Andrew had been standing together outside a hospital.
But Vanessa had shown Chloe a different photograph—one of Andrew with Patricia.
That meant Vanessa had been deliberately mixing images to create a false story.
"Did she say anything else?""
Chloe hesitated.
"She said Grandma used to love him. She said Mom took him away, and that's why Grandma hated her.""
I looked at Marcus.
He was listening carefully, his expression grim.
Chloe continued.
"She also said that if the papers proved I wasn't your daughter, then I wouldn't get to live in our house anymore.""
I drew my daughter into my arms.
"You will always have a home with me.""
She held on tightly.
I could feel her trembling.
After a while, Marcus quietly left us alone.
I sat with Chloe until she calmed down, then helped her unpack her schoolbag.
Inside the front pocket was the list she had written, along with the photograph of Emily.
I placed both items in a clear folder so Susan could review them.
Then I noticed something tucked into the bottom corner of the bag.
A small envelope, sealed with a piece of purple tape.
Chloe stared at it.
"I forgot about that.""
"What is it?""
"Vanessa gave it to me last week. She said I had to keep it safe.""
My stomach tightened.
"What did she tell you was inside?""
"She said it was something I would need if I wanted to stay with you.""
I looked at the envelope.
There was no name on the front.
Only a date.
The date of Emily's funeral.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a printed photograph of a document, followed by a handwritten note.
The document appeared to be a legal acknowledgment of paternity.
But the signature at the bottom was not mine.
It belonged to someone named Richard Whitmore.
I looked at Chloe.
"Do you know who Richard Whitmore is?""
She shook her head.
I searched the name on my phone.
A news article appeared from six years earlier.
Richard Whitmore, Patricia's late husband, had died after a brief illness.
He had been a successful property developer and a longtime associate of my father.
I stared at the photograph again.
If the document were genuine, it suggested that Richard had acknowledged paternity of a child.
But it did not name Chloe.
And it did not establish that he was her biological father.
The handwritten note, however, made a much more disturbing claim.
If Daniel refuses to cooperate, show him this. He will understand that the child was never supposed to belong to him.
I felt a chill spread through me.
Who had written it?
And why had Vanessa given it to Chloe?
My phone rang.
It was Susan.
"Daniel, I need you to come to my office immediately. The court has received an additional filing from Patricia's attorney.""
"What does it say?""
"She's alleging that you knew about the paternity dispute before marrying Vanessa and concealed it to secure control of Chloe's trust.""
I looked at the note in my hand.
"That's impossible.""
"I know. But the filing includes a witness statement from someone who claims you discussed the matter with them several years ago.""
"Who?""
Susan paused.
Then she said, "Your father.""
I stared at the photograph of Richard Whitmore's signature.
"My father is dead.""
"I understand that. But the statement is dated six years ago and claims he personally informed you that Chloe might not be your biological daughter.""
I felt my stomach drop.
Someone had fabricated a statement from a dead man.
And they were using it to suggest I had knowingly hidden the truth.
I looked toward Chloe, who was watching me with frightened eyes.
"Is something wrong, Daddy?""
I forced myself to smile.
"No, sweetheart. Nothing you need to worry about.""
But inside, I knew the situation had become far more dangerous.
Patricia wasn't simply trying to take control of Chloe's inheritance.
She was building a story in which I was the villain, Vanessa was the rescuer, and Chloe was the child who needed to be removed from my care.
And if she could persuade the court to believe that story, the truth might arrive too late.
That evening, I sat in Susan's office while she spread the documents across the conference table.
The alleged statement from my father was short.
It claimed he had warned me that Emily's pregnancy involved another man, that I had agreed to raise Chloe regardless, and that I had later concealed the information to protect my inheritance.
Every sentence was a lie.
But the document bore what appeared to be my father's signature.
Susan examined it under a desk lamp.
"This may be a forgery," she said.
"We need an independent handwriting analysis. We also need to establish when and where this document was supposedly created.""
"Can we prove it isn't genuine?""
"We can challenge it. But we need evidence.""
I thought about the photograph Chloe had shown me, the false paternity report, and Emily's sealed records.
Then I remembered the name Michael had mentioned.
Samuel Reed.
Andrew Whitmore's former business partner.
If Patricia had been involved in the financial irregularities Andrew discovered, Samuel might have records connecting her to the forged documents.
I called Michael.
He answered immediately.
"I need Samuel Reed's contact information.""
There was a pause.
"Why?""
"Because Patricia is using documents connected to Andrew Whitmore to challenge my parental rights. I believe Samuel may have evidence of what really happened.""
Michael gave me the number.
I called Samuel from the parking lot.
He answered with a cautious, "Hello?""
"My name is Daniel Carter. Andrew Whitmore was your business partner.""
Silence.
Then Samuel said, "I wondered when someone would call.""
My heart began to pound.
"What do you know about Patricia?""
Samuel exhaled slowly.
"More than I wish I did.""
"Did Andrew leave records proving she forged documents or misused the family trust?""
"I can't discuss the details without knowing why you're asking.""
"My wife and mother-in-law are trying to use a false paternity report to take my daughter away from me.""
Samuel went quiet.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"Daniel, if Patricia is doing that, she's following the same plan she used against Andrew.""
"What plan?""
"She accused him of falsifying family records, had him removed from the company, and used the resulting legal dispute to gain control of his assets.""
I gripped the phone.
"Can you prove it?""
"I kept copies of everything. But there's a problem.""
"What?""
"Andrew's records include a letter from Emily. It explains why Patricia was so determined to destroy him.""
I stared at the city lights.
"What's in the letter?""
Samuel's voice dropped.
"Emily discovered that Patricia had been using Richard Whitmore's identity to authorize transfers from the family trust. She found evidence that Richard had never signed several of the documents.""
I closed my eyes.
"How does that connect to Chloe?""
"Because the same forged signature appears on a declaration claiming Richard was her biological father.""
I couldn't breathe.
Samuel continued.
"Daniel, if that declaration is false, then Patricia has been using your daughter's name to cover up something she did years ago.""
I looked at the photograph of Richard's signature.
The signature on the declaration was almost identical to the one on the statement attributed to my father.
Someone had been forging documents for years.
And now they were using the same method to target my daughter.
I thanked Samuel and arranged to meet him the following morning.
Then I returned home.
Chloe was asleep on the couch, her head resting on Emily's old photograph.
I covered her with a blanket and sat beside her.
For the first time since this nightmare began, I felt certain of one thing.
Vanessa and Patricia had created a story to make me doubt my place in Chloe's life.
But the real secret wasn't whether I was her biological father.
May you like
It was why they needed everyone to believe I wasn't.
And tomorrow, I was going to find out.
