Chapter 4: My Own Sister Betrayed Me
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
My sister, Lauren, had held Chloe in the hospital the night Emily died. She had stayed at my house for two weeks afterward, cooking meals I barely touched and sleeping on the couch because Chloe couldn't bear to be alone at night.
Lauren had been the person who told me I didn't have to be both parents perfectly. I only had to be present.
And now her name was on a legal document accusing me of neglecting my daughter.
"Robert," I said slowly, "tell me you made a mistake.""
"I wish I could, Daniel. The affidavit bears her signature. I haven't verified whether every statement in it is accurate, but the filing is real.""
"What exactly did she claim?""
"That Chloe is frequently left unsupervised, that you travel without making reliable childcare arrangements, and that your daughter has displayed signs of emotional distress.""
I looked at my phone's camera feed.
Vanessa was pulling Chloe toward the stairs. Patricia stood beside the front door, apparently deciding whether to let Marcus inside.
"Chloe has never been left alone," I said.
"We have a nanny who comes during school holidays, and Vanessa is home most days.""
"Then we need documentation proving that. Employment records, school attendance, childcare arrangements, messages. Everything.""
"How long has this been going on?""
"The petition was filed three weeks ago.""
Three weeks.
That was the same week Vanessa had started insisting that Chloe needed stricter rules. It was also the week Lauren had invited me to dinner, asking pointed questions about how often I traveled and whether I had ever considered hiring a full-time nanny.
I had interpreted those questions as concern.
Now they sounded like preparation.
"Robert, I need you to listen carefully," I said.
"My wife and her mother are trying to take Chloe somewhere. My friend is outside my house, and they won't let him in.""
"Call the police if you believe Chloe is in immediate danger. I'm contacting the family-law specialist now. Do not attempt to resolve this by threatening anyone.""
"I understand.""
"And Daniel?""
"Yes?""
"Don't underestimate what a false allegation can do if you leave it unanswered. Preserve everything.""
I ended the call and immediately dialed 911.
While the operator asked for my address, I kept watching the cameras.
Marcus was still on the porch.
"Vanessa!"" he called through the door.
"Daniel asked me to pick up Chloe. Please open up.""
Patricia approached the door but kept the chain lock in place when she opened it a few inches.
"She's getting ready," she said.
"Then I'll wait inside.""
"That won't be necessary.""
Marcus glanced at his phone.
"Ma'am, Daniel specifically asked me to make sure Chloe was safe.""
Patricia's expression hardened.
"This is a family matter. You have no authority here.""
Marcus didn't argue.
Instead, he stepped back and called me.
"Daniel, they won't let me in. Chloe was crying a minute ago, and I heard someone tell her she wasn't going anywhere.""
The emergency operator was still speaking in my ear.
I gave her the details and explained what I had witnessed through the security cameras.
Then I returned to Marcus.
"Stay where you are. The police are on their way.""
He lowered his voice.
"Is there something you're not telling me?""
I looked at the screen, where Vanessa had disappeared upstairs with Chloe.
"Yes," I said.
"But first, I need to get my daughter out of that house.""
Inside the bedroom, Vanessa was opening drawers and throwing clothes into a suitcase.
Chloe stood near the closet, hugging her schoolbag.
"Where are we going?"" she asked.
Vanessa didn't look at her.
"To Grandma's house.""
"Can I tell Daddy first?""
"No.""
"But—"
"Chloe, I said no.""
The little girl fell silent.
Patricia entered carrying the manila envelope.
"We need to leave in ten minutes.""
Vanessa zipped the suitcase.
"What about the school?""
"I'll call them.""
"And Daniel?""
Patricia gave her a cold look.
"Your husband has a meeting. By the time he understands what's happening, we'll have the paperwork in order.""
Chloe looked up.
"What paperwork?""
Neither woman answered.
Vanessa took the pink notebook from the bed and shoved it into her handbag.
Chloe immediately stepped forward.
"Please! Give that back!""
Vanessa held it above her head.
"Why? What's so special about this little book?""
"It's mine!""
"Then you should have thought about that before you wrote things you weren't supposed to write.""
Chloe's eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't write anything bad.""
Patricia closed the bedroom door.
"Then you won't mind telling us what's in it.""
Chloe backed against the wall.
"I just write things down when I'm sad.""
Vanessa laughed without humor.
"How convenient.""
She opened the notebook and flipped through several pages.
I couldn't read the writing from the camera angle, but I could see Vanessa's fingers stop at one page.
Her expression changed.
Patricia moved closer.
"What is it?""
Vanessa turned the notebook toward her mother.
Patricia read silently.
Then she whispered, "She wrote the date.""
Vanessa's face drained of color.
"Every time," she murmured.
Patricia seized the notebook.
"Chloe, where did you get the information for these entries?""
Chloe shook her head.
"I didn't get it from anywhere. I was there.""
Patricia stared at her.
"Don't lie to me.""
"I'm not!""
Vanessa slammed the notebook shut.
"Stop shouting.""
Chloe's breathing became shallow.
"I just want my daddy.""
Something in me broke.
I had spent years believing that love meant providing stability: a safe house, good schools, a comfortable life, and a future Chloe wouldn't have to worry about.
But none of those things mattered if my daughter was afraid to ask for her father.
I opened the camera's two-way audio.
"Chloe, sweetheart, listen to me. Daddy is here.""
All three of them froze.
Vanessa slowly turned toward the camera.
"Daniel?""
"I'm watching everything. Step away from my daughter.""
Her face tightened.
"You have no right to spy on me in my own home.""
"It's my house, too. And the cameras were installed for our family's safety.""
"You can't understand what it's like living with a child who refuses to respect me.""
"She's ten years old!""
"She's manipulative!""
"She's frightened!""
Vanessa opened her mouth, but I continued.
"I saw the bags with Emily's belongings. I heard what you and your mother said about the adoption. I know about the guardianship petition.""
Patricia stepped forward.
"You have no idea what you're talking about.""
"Then explain the petition my sister signed.""
Silence.
Vanessa looked at Patricia.
Patricia looked at Vanessa.
For the first time, neither woman had an answer ready.
I leaned closer to the microphone.
"Where are you planning to take Chloe?""
Vanessa's voice became brittle.
"We're taking her somewhere calm until you stop making this into a spectacle.""
"You are not taking my daughter anywhere.""
"You can't order me around from another state!""
"I can tell the police exactly what I've seen.""
Patricia grabbed Vanessa's arm.
"Hang up.""
Vanessa ignored her.
"Daniel, if you come home and start accusing me of things you don't understand, you'll destroy this marriage.""
I looked at Chloe, who was standing between them with her hands pressed over her ears.
"You destroyed it when you made my daughter afraid of her own home.""
I ended the intercom connection.
A moment later, the front door camera showed two police cruisers pulling up outside.
Marcus stepped toward the officers and pointed to the house.
Patricia saw them through the window.
"Vanessa," she whispered, "get the notebook.""
Vanessa clutched her handbag.
"Why?""
"Because if they find it, we're finished.""
The officers knocked.
"Police! We need to speak with the occupants.""
Vanessa looked at Chloe.
Then she did something that made my blood run cold.
She grabbed the girl's shoulder and forced a smile onto her face.
"Remember what we discussed," she whispered.
"If anyone asks, Daddy has been making you upset. You understand?""
Chloe shook her head.
Vanessa bent closer.
"Do you understand?""
Chloe's eyes darted toward the camera.
"Yes, ma'am," she whispered.
The words sounded like a surrender.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I stayed on the line with the dispatcher while the officers entered the house.
One officer remained near the living room while the other spoke with Vanessa and Patricia in the kitchen.
Marcus stood near the staircase, waiting for permission to approach Chloe.
Vanessa immediately began explaining.
"My husband is overreacting. Our daughter has been acting out, and I'm trying to discipline her. He's watching us through cameras and making threats.""
The officer glanced at the cleaning bucket, the wet floor, and the abandoned sponge.
"Why was the child cleaning the floor in her school uniform?""
Vanessa blinked.
"She spilled something.""
"At what time?""
"I don't remember.""
"Why wasn't she at school?""
"She was about to leave.""
The officer looked toward Patricia.
"Ma'am, do you live here?""
"No.""
"Then why are you here?""
"Helping my daughter.""
The officer nodded toward the hallway.
"Would you mind waiting in the living room while we speak with everyone separately?""
Patricia stiffened.
"Are you accusing us of something?""
"I'm asking you to cooperate.""
As Patricia walked away, Vanessa glanced toward the staircase.
Chloe was no longer there.
Marcus had found her in her bedroom, sitting on the floor beside her bed.
He crouched several feet away.
"Hey, kiddo," he said gently.
"Your dad sent me. I'm going to stay with you, okay?""
Chloe stared at him.
"Is Daddy mad at me?""
Marcus's face crumpled for a fraction of a second.
"No, sweetheart. Not at you.""
"Did I do something wrong?""
"No.""
Chloe looked down at her hands.
"Then why is everybody fighting?""
Marcus didn't answer immediately.
He simply sat on the floor beside her, leaving enough space for her to decide whether she wanted him closer.
After a moment, Chloe leaned against his shoulder.
I turned away from the screen and pressed my knuckles against my mouth.
My daughter had spent months trying to make herself small enough that nobody would get angry.
And I had been too busy to notice.
The officer called me back through Marcus's phone.
"Mr. Carter, we've spoken with your wife and mother-in-law. We don't have enough information to make any conclusions about the broader allegations at this point. However, given what you've reported, we're arranging for your daughter to remain with a trusted adult while the situation is assessed.""
"Can Marcus take her?""
"We're checking that now.""
"Please. He's someone she knows and trusts.""
"We understand.""
The officer paused.
"Mr. Carter, we also found several documents in a bag near the kitchen. One appears to be related to a proposed guardianship arrangement. We'll need to determine what those documents are and why they were brought here.""
My eyes moved to the corner where Emily's belongings had been stored.
"There's more," I said.
"My wife and her mother have been discussing an adoption. They have a flash drive that may contain evidence of something involving my late wife.""
The officer made a note.
"Do you know what's on it?""
"No. But they were frightened when they watched it.""
"I'll make sure the investigating officer knows.""
Then he asked a question I wasn't prepared for.
"Mr. Carter, is there anyone else who could help us understand the situation? Someone who has regular contact with your daughter?""
I thought of Lauren.
My sister's signature was on a sworn statement accusing me of neglect.
But I needed to know why.
"I can give you a name," I said.
"Whether she'll tell the truth is another question.""
Before I could explain further, Marcus appeared on the camera near the front door.
He was holding Chloe's hand.
She had her backpack on again, but this time he had adjusted the straps so they weren't pulling her shoulders down.
As they stepped outside, Chloe looked back at the house.
She stared at the front door for several seconds.
Then she whispered something to Marcus.
The camera microphone caught every word.
"Can we take my notebook?""
Marcus glanced at the bag Vanessa was carrying.
"Is it inside?""
Chloe shook her head.
"No. She took it.""
Marcus turned toward the officers.
One of them went back inside to retrieve Chloe's belongings.
But when he returned, the notebook was missing.
Vanessa claimed she had never seen it.
Patricia said Chloe must have misplaced it.
And Chloe stood silently beside Marcus, staring at the ground.
I knew she was telling the truth.
I also knew the notebook contained something important enough to frighten two grown women.
My phone vibrated.
An unfamiliar number appeared.
I answered.
A woman's voice spoke quietly.
"Daniel, this is Emily's old friend, Rachel. I heard something happened at your house.""
I straightened.
"How did you hear about it?""
"Lauren called me last night. She asked whether I still had copies of the documents Emily left before she died.""
My heart stopped.
"What documents?""
Rachel hesitated.
"Daniel, there's something you need to know about Emily's death. Something she asked me to keep secret until Chloe was old enough to understand.""
I stared at the camera feed as the police car carrying my daughter pulled away from the curb.
"What does that have to do with my wife?""
Rachel took a shaky breath.
"Everything. Because Emily didn't just leave you a letter.""
May you like
She paused.
"She left one for Chloe, too.""
