Chapter 9: The Memory Behind The Door

I didn’t tell Mark I saw the messages.

I didn’t respond.

For once, I wanted him to feel what it was like to have no control.

To wonder.

To wait.

To fear.

The way I had for years.

Ethan sat across from me while Zoe listened silently.

Nobody spoke for a while.

Finally, I asked:

“What exactly happened?””

Ethan looked at me.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Even if it hurts?””

I almost smiled.

“Everything hurts.””

He nodded.

Then he began.

“Six years ago, you found out you were pregnant.””

I looked down.

“With Lily.””

“Yes.””

“And you were my husband.””

“Yes.””

I swallowed.

“Then why don’t I remember you?””

“Because of the accident.””

“What happened?””

Ethan looked away.

“One night, you told me you were afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of Mark.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

“Because he was obsessed with you.””

The room felt colder.

“He worked with your family.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He was around all the time.””

My mind flashed.

Family dinners.

Old memories.

A man always nearby.

Always helping.

Always smiling.

“He convinced everyone he was your friend.””

Ethan continued.

“But he wanted more.””

I whispered:

“More?””

“Yes.””

My hands shook.

“When did he become involved?””

“After the accident.””

I closed my eyes.

The pieces were starting to connect.

“He told me you were gone.””

Ethan’s voice cracked.

“He told me you didn’t remember our marriage.””

I looked at him.

“And you believed him?””

“I was devastated.””

He looked ashamed.

“I made mistakes.””

“What mistakes?””

“I gave up.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I thought you had chosen a new life.””

My eyes filled.

“So Mark stole my life.””

“Yes.””

“And Lily?””

Ethan looked at me.

“He knew Lily existed.””

“Of course he did.””

“He knew because he was there.””

I froze.

“Where?””

“The hospital.””

My stomach dropped.

“The night she was born.””

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“He came to see you.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew if you remembered me, he would lose you.””

I looked at Zoe.

She was crying quietly.

Ethan continued.

“He convinced you that your memories with me were confused.””

“No.””

“He told you Lily’s father was unknown.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“He told you he was the only person who stayed.””

My breathing became uneven.

Because that sounded like Mark.

Exactly like Mark.

He never forced me to love him.

He just slowly became the only person I thought I had.

My phone rang.

This time, it was Mark.

I answered.

“What?””

Silence.

Then:

“Where are you?””

“Why?””

“Because I need to explain.””

I laughed.

“Explain what?””

“Everything.””

“No.””

“Chloe, please.””

I heard something I had never heard from him before.

Fear.

“I know what Ethan told you.””

My blood ran cold.

“How?””

“Because I know him.””

I stood.

“You know him?””

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

“Tell me why you erased my life.””

Mark’s breathing changed.

“I didn’t erase it.””

“You lied.””

“I protected you.””

I almost screamed.

“You protected me from remembering my own husband?””

“From pain.””

“No.””

My voice became cold.

“You protected yourself.””

“Chloe.””

“Where is the accident report?””

Silence.

That silence was my answer.

“You don’t have it.””

“Chloe—”

“Because there was no accident.””

The line went quiet.

Zoe looked at me.

Ethan stood.

And then Mark whispered:

“Who told you that?””

I closed my eyes.

Because I finally heard the truth.

Not from Ethan.

Not from Emma.

From Mark himself.

“There was no accident.””

Another silence.

Then Mark said:

“I can explain.””

“No.””

“Please.””

“You have explained enough.””

I ended the call.

My hands were shaking.

But not from fear.

From anger.

Because I finally remembered something.

Not everything.

Just one moment.

One image.

A hospital hallway.

A newborn baby crying.

And Mark standing beside me.

Not as my husband.

As a stranger.

Holding a piece of paper.

Telling me:

“Your old life is gone.””

I looked at Ethan.

“I remember something.””

Everyone became still.

“What?””

I whispered:

“The hospital.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“What happened?””

I closed my eyes.

And the memory returned.

“He wasn’t comforting me.””

My voice shook.

“He was threatening me.””

Zoe covered her mouth.

Ethan went pale.

“What did he say?””

I opened my eyes.

And I remembered the exact words.

“He said…”

I swallowed.

“He said if I ever tried to leave…”

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Mark.

May you like

Only one sentence.

*If you remember everything, Lily won’t be safe.*
