Chapter 6: The Brother Who Knew
I didn’t scream.
That surprised me.
I thought I would.
I thought I would throw something.
Break something.
Demand answers until my voice disappeared.
But I didn’t.
I just stood there.
Holding my phone.
Reading the same name over and over.
Daniel Anderson.
Mark’s brother.
The man who had carried Lily on his shoulders at family gatherings.
The man who bought her birthday presents.
The man who called her “little princess.””
The man sitting at that Thanksgiving table while Megan slapped her.
I looked at Mark.
“Did Daniel know?””
His face told me everything.
“Yes.””
The answer came so quietly.
But it destroyed me.
“Everyone knew.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Megan knew.””
Silence.
“Your mother knew.””
Silence.
“Daniel knew.””
His shoulders dropped.
“Chloe…”
“Everyone knew except me.””
He didn’t deny it.
I walked away from him.
Into the kitchen.
Because I needed distance.
I needed walls.
I needed something between me and the man I had married.
“How?””
Mark followed.
“Chloe—”
“How did this happen?””
He stopped.
I turned around.
“How did my entire family know something about my child that I didn’t?””
His voice cracked.
“Because I was scared.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Stop saying that.””
“Why?””
“Because scared people tell the truth. Cowards hide it.””
The words hurt him.
Good.
For once, I wanted him to feel something.
“I didn’t know what to do.””
“You knew exactly what to do.””
“What?””
“Tell me.””
Mark looked away.
“I thought if I told you, I would lose Lily.””
“You weren’t protecting Lily.””
“I loved her.””
“You were protecting yourself.””
His eyes filled.
And I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Then I remembered Lily’s question.
*Daddy didn’t come because I was bad?*
No.
She didn’t get to carry the weight of his choices.
Not anymore.
“Who is Daniel’s father?””
Mark looked confused.
“What?””
“The test.””
I held up my phone.
“It says Daniel.””
He went pale.
“That’s not what it means.””
“Then explain it.””
He didn’t answer.
“Explain it!””
He looked toward the window.
Then whispered:
“Daniel isn’t her father.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He’s not.””
“Then why is his name there?””
Mark’s hands shook.
“Because Daniel helped me.””
“Helped you?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
He sat down.
And for the first time, I saw how much he had been carrying.
Not enough to forgive him.
But enough to understand he had been living with this secret for years.
“The night before the test, I thought I was going to lose everything.””
I stared at him.
“What are you talking about?””
He swallowed.
“Daniel took the test for me.””
The room went silent.
I felt sick.
“You’re saying…”
“Yes.””
“He lied?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Mark closed his eyes.
“Because he was my brother.””
I laughed.
A cold, empty sound.
“So he helped you deceive your wife.””
“Yes.””
“And everyone just agreed?””
“Yes.””
I sat down.
Because my body suddenly felt too heavy.
The entire Anderson family.
All those dinners.
All those smiles.
All those moments where they called Lily theirs.
A performance.
A lie.
My phone buzzed again.
This time, it was Zoe.
*You need to come here. Now.*
I called immediately.
She answered.
“Chloe?””
“What happened?””
Her breathing was fast.
“Emma came to my house.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“She brought something.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then Zoe whispered:
“Another recording.””
I looked at Mark.
He was watching me.
He knew.
“What recording?””
Zoe’s voice dropped.
“The conversation between Megan and Daniel.””
My heart began pounding.
“What were they talking about?””
Zoe didn’t answer.
“Zoe.””
She took a shaky breath.
“They weren’t talking about Lily’s father.””
I frowned.
“Then what?””
Her voice broke.
“They were talking about why Megan hit Lily.””
I gripped the phone tighter.
“Why?””
A long silence.
Then Zoe said:
“Because Lily had found something.””
“What?””
“A document.””
“What document?””
Zoe whispered the words that changed everything.
“A document proving Mark was never Lily’s biological father…”
I waited.
“…and proving someone else in that family had known the truth all along.””
I looked at Mark.
And suddenly I understood.
The secret wasn’t only about who Lily’s father was.
May you like
The secret was about who they were protecting.
And why.
