Chapter 1: The Secret Zoe Kept

Zoe’s silence terrified me more than her words could have.

The car was parked on the side of an empty street, the engine humming softly while Lily sat in the back seat clutching her stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Outside, Thanksgiving decorations glowed from the houses around me.

Warm lights.

Happy families.

People laughing behind windows.

It felt cruel.

Because only an hour earlier, I had walked into my husband’s family dinner believing I was surrounded by people who loved us.

Now I was sitting in the dark, wondering if I had ever really known them at all.

“Zoe,” I whispered.

“What recording?””

For several seconds, all I heard was the sound of her breathing.

Then she answered.

“The one Mark made last year.””

My forehead creased.

“Made what?””

“A recording of a conversation between him and Megan.””

My grip tightened around the steering wheel.

“Why would Mark record a conversation with his sister?””

“He didn’t record it on purpose.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“Zoe, you’re scaring me.””

“I know.””

“Tell me.””

She exhaled.

“Chloe, I need you to listen to me carefully. Do not call Mark. Do not text him. Do not let him know I have this.””

I looked toward the rearview mirror.

Lily was staring out the window.

Her little cheek still had a faint red mark.

A mark that should never have existed.

“Zoe,” I said quietly, “what did you find?””

Her voice lowered.

“Proof that tonight wasn’t the first time Megan crossed a line.””

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?””

“I mean Mark knew exactly what kind of person she was.””

The street suddenly felt colder.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

“No.””

“Chloe…”

“No,” I repeated.

“Mark would never—”

The words sounded ridiculous even as I said them.

Because two hours ago, I would have said the same thing about him letting someone hurt Lily.

But he did.

He sat there.

He watched.

He chose silence.

Zoe spoke again.

“I found the recording when I was helping Mom clean out the old storage room.””

I swallowed.

“What was it?””

“A voice memo. From Mark’s phone.””

“Why was it on his phone?””

“Because he sent it to himself.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It will when you hear it.””

A long pause followed.

Then I heard a car door close.

“Zoe?””

“I’m outside your car.””

I looked up.

Twenty feet away, my sister stood beside her SUV.

She had driven faster than I thought possible.

She walked toward me, her face pale.

The moment she opened my car door, she pulled me into a hug.

And I broke.

Not because of Megan.

Not because of Thanksgiving.

Because my husband had been the one person I thought would stand between our daughter and the world.

And he hadn’t.

“I’m sorry,” Zoe whispered.

I wiped my tears quickly.

“Where’s the recording?””

She looked toward Lily.

“Not here.””

I understood immediately.

My daughter had already heard enough.

I started the car again and followed Zoe back to my apartment.

The drive was silent.

Lily fell asleep halfway there.

When I carried her inside, she wrapped her arms around my neck.

“Mommy?””

“I’m here, baby.””

“Are we going back to Daddy’s house?””

My throat tightened.

“It’s our house too.””

She looked confused.

“Then why didn’t Daddy come?””

I didn’t have an answer.

So I kissed her forehead.

“Go sleep, sweetheart.””

After I tucked her in, I walked into the living room.

Zoe was standing beside the coffee table.

A small flash drive sat in her hand.

Something so tiny.

Something that could destroy everything.

“You’re sure you want to hear this?”” she asked.

I stared at it.

“No.””

Zoe looked surprised.

I continued.

“I don’t want to hear it.””

My voice cracked.

“But I need to.””

She nodded.

Slowly, she plugged it into her laptop.

The room was quiet.

Too quiet.

Then the audio began.

At first, there was only static.

Then I heard Mark’s voice.

My husband’s voice.

The voice that used to calm me when I cried.

The voice that whispered promises in the dark.

“I’m telling you, Megan, you can’t keep doing this.””

I froze.

Then Megan answered.

“You’re acting like I murdered someone.””

My stomach twisted.

Mark sighed.

“She’s a child.””

“She’s spoiled.””

“She’s five.””

“And she already knows how to manipulate people.””

My hands went cold.

Zoe watched my face.

The recording continued.

Mark’s voice became sharper.

“You scared her.””

Megan laughed.

“She needs someone to scare her.””

A few seconds passed.

Then Mark said something that made me stop breathing.

“You promised me you wouldn’t touch her again.””

The room disappeared.

Again.

The word echoed in my mind.

Again.

I looked at Zoe.

She looked like she wanted to cry.

The recording continued.

Megan’s voice became quieter.

“You’re making this a bigger deal than it is.””

“No,” Mark replied.

“I’m saying if Chloe finds out—”

“She won’t.””

“And if she does?””

Megan laughed.

“Then you’ll do what you always do.””

Silence.

Then Mark asked:

“What does that mean?””

Her answer came softly.

“You’ll choose your family.””

The recording ended.

I sat completely still.

Because suddenly I understood.

The slap at Thanksgiving wasn’t the beginning.

It was the moment they finally got caught.

And the worst part wasn’t that Megan hurt Lily.

It was that Mark had known.

May you like

He had known.

And he had still brought our daughter into that house.
