Chapter 7: Room Seven
The old Cole building looked less like a maternity center than a place everyone had agreed to forget.
Marcus killed the headlights two blocks away.
Rain tapped against the windshield.
The warehouse stood at the end of a dead industrial road, its windows boarded, its brick walls blackened by years of weather. A faded sign still hung above the entrance.
*COLE MATERNITY CENTER.*
Marcus stared at it.
“Your family owned this?””
Vanessa nodded.
“My father did.””
“And Liam was born here?””
“Yes.””
Ethan checked the street behind them.
“No movement.””
Marcus turned toward Vanessa.
“Tell me everything before we go inside.””
She shook her head.
“I already told you.””
“No. You told me pieces.””
Marcus held up the photograph.
“Your father. You. A baby.
A bracelet. A trust. A secret father.””
He looked directly into her eyes.
“I want the whole story.””
Vanessa stared through the windshield.
“When I was twenty-four, I got pregnant.””
“With Liam?””
“Yes.””
“By Ethan?””
“Yes.””
Ethan looked down.
Vanessa continued.
“Your father found out.””
Marcus waited.
“He wasn't angry.””
“That doesn't sound like Dad.””
“He wasn't angry because he already knew Ethan.””
Marcus glanced at him.
“How?””
Ethan answered quietly.
“Your father hired me when I was nineteen.””
Marcus frowned.
“For what?””
“Security.””
Marcus looked at Ethan again.
“You were his security?””
“Not exactly. I worked with his private investigators.””
Vanessa took a breath.
“My father-in-law discovered Daniel had been stealing from the company. He suspected Richard was helping him. He believed they would eventually come after Liam because Liam had a legal claim to assets they couldn't touch.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“And Jonathan?””
“He created the trust.””
“And the altered blood test?””
Vanessa's eyes closed.
“That came later.””
“When?””
“After Liam was born.””
Marcus's voice hardened.
“Who altered it?””
“I don't know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I watched the blood being taken.””
“From Liam?””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
“The results came back showing Ethan wasn't the father.””
Ethan's head snapped toward her.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I didn't know until the results arrived.””
Ethan stared.
“You told me I wasn't the father.””
“I thought you weren't.””
Marcus looked between them.
“Why would anyone alter it?””
Vanessa whispered:
“To make Liam legally unconnected to Ethan.””
Marcus frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does if the person behind it wanted Ethan out of the picture.””
Ethan's face tightened.
“Daniel.””
“Maybe.””
Marcus opened the truck door.
“Enough guessing.””
He stepped into the rain.
Vanessa followed.
Ethan came behind them.
They reached the warehouse entrance.
The door was already open.
Marcus stopped.
“No one opens an abandoned building by accident.””
Ethan nodded.
“Stay behind me.””
Marcus pushed the door.
It creaked inward.
Inside, the air smelled of wet concrete and rust.
A narrow corridor stretched into darkness.
On the walls were old photographs.
Newborns.
Mothers.
Doctors.
Marcus's flashlight moved across them.
Then stopped.
A photograph of Vanessa.
Young.
Holding a newborn.
Marcus stared.
“That was Liam.””
Vanessa nodded.
“He was three days old.””
Marcus looked at the photograph.
The baby had a tiny hospital bracelet.
*BABY BOY — COLE.*
He looked at Vanessa.
“You kept this?””
“No.””
“Then who put it here?””
A speaker crackled overhead.
Daniel's voice filled the corridor.
“Good question.””
Marcus spun.
“Daniel!””
A laugh echoed through the building.
“You always were impatient.””
Marcus shouted:
“Where's Liam?””
“Room seven.””
“Let him go.””
“Come upstairs.””
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“Trap.””
“Obviously,” Ethan said.
Vanessa whispered, “Room seven is at the end of the corridor.””
They moved.
Halfway down, Marcus saw something on the floor.
A child's glasses.
Liam's.
He picked them up.
One lens was cracked.
His hand shook.
“He was here.””
Ethan crouched.
“Blood.””
Marcus looked.
A tiny red smear marked the tile.
His breathing stopped.
“Liam.””
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Marcus.””
He pulled away.
“I should have protected him.””
“You didn't know.””
“I should have known.””
They reached a metal staircase.
At the top was a door.
*ROOM 7.*
Marcus opened it.
Empty.
An old delivery room.
A rusted bed.
A broken examination light.
And on the wall, written in black marker:
*ASK VANESSA WHO SIGNED THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE.*
Marcus turned.
Vanessa had stopped in the doorway.
“Who?””
She stared at the writing.
“I don't remember.””
“You don't remember?””
“It was twelve years ago.””
Marcus stepped toward her.
“Who signed it?””
“I don't know.””
Ethan looked at the wall.
“There.””
He pointed beneath the writing.
A small metal plate had been screwed into the wall.
Marcus removed it.
Behind it was a sealed envelope.
His name was written on it.
*MARCUS.*
He opened it.
Inside was a copy of Liam's original birth certificate.
Marcus scanned it.
Mother: Vanessa Cole.
Father: *Unknown.*
He looked at Ethan.
“You weren't listed.””
“No.””
Marcus flipped the page.
At the bottom was the attending physician's signature.
*Dr. Samuel Voss.*
Vanessa's face drained of color.
Marcus noticed.
“You know him.””
“No.””
“Vanessa.””
She shook her head.
“I've never heard that name.””
Ethan looked at the certificate.
Then at her.
“You're lying.””
Vanessa turned.
“How dare you?””
“You know that name.””
“I don't.””
Ethan pointed to the signature.
“Samuel Voss was Daniel's doctor.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
“He treated Daniel after the accident.””
“What accident?””
Ethan hesitated.
“The one that supposedly happened before your father died.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“What accident?””
Vanessa suddenly whispered:
“Daniel wasn't supposed to survive.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What happened?””
“His car went off a bridge.””
“And?””
“He survived.””
“When?””
“Three weeks before Liam was born.””
Marcus stared at the birth certificate.
“Why would his doctor deliver Liam?””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“He didn't.””
A sound came from behind the wall.
Three knocks.
Marcus froze.
Then three more.
Someone was trapped.
He and Ethan rushed toward the sound.
They found a narrow service door.
Marcus kicked it open.
Liam was inside.
His wrists were tied.
His face was pale.
“Dad!””
Marcus dropped beside him.
“Oh God.””
He cut the restraints with a broken piece of metal.
Liam threw his arms around him.
Marcus held him tightly.
“I've got you.””
Liam whispered into his shoulder:
“I knew you'd come.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“I'll always come.””
Ethan crouched.
“Are you hurt?””
Liam shook his head.
“No.””
“Who brought you here?””
Liam looked toward the ceiling.
“Uncle Daniel.””
Marcus's blood went cold.
“What did he want?””
“The box.””
“Did you tell him where it was?””
“No.””
“Good.””
Liam pulled away.
“There was another man.””
Marcus stiffened.
“Who?””
“I couldn't see his face.””
“What did he say?””
Liam looked at Vanessa.
“He said Mom wasn't my real mother.””
Vanessa went pale.
Marcus stared at the boy.
“What else?””
Liam swallowed.
“He said my real mother died here.””
Silence.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She couldn't speak.
Liam reached into his pocket.
“I found this.””
He handed Marcus a small silver key.
Marcus recognized it immediately.
Same engraving.
*417.*
“Where did you get this?””
“From the man.””
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“The bank box.””
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because 417 wasn't the box number.””
Marcus frowned.
“What was it?””
Ethan stared at the key.
“It was the room number.””
Marcus looked at the door behind them.
*ROOM 7.*
Then he noticed a small number etched beneath the handle.
*4-17.*
His father's final clue.
Room 417.
Marcus slowly opened the hidden panel beside the door.
A narrow compartment appeared.
Inside was a video camera.
Still recording.
Marcus pressed play.
His father's face appeared.
But this time, he wasn't alone.
A woman stood beside him.
Marcus recognized her.
Not Vanessa.
A woman from the photograph.
The same woman who had been holding a newborn beside his father.
Marcus stared.
“Who is that?””
Vanessa whispered:
“I don't know.””
The woman on the recording turned toward the camera.
Her eyes were full of tears.
She said:
“Marcus, if you're seeing this, then Vanessa lied to you.””
The video stopped.
Liam looked at his father.
“Dad?””
Marcus couldn't answer.
The camera screen flashed.
*FILE 2 OF 2.*
He pressed play.
The woman returned.
And this time she spoke one sentence.
“Liam is not Vanessa's son.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She collapsed against the wall.
Then the warehouse lights came on.
Daniel stood at the far end of the corridor.
May you like
And beside him stood the woman from the video.
Alive.
