Chapter 3: The Child Nobody Mentioned

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

For several seconds, he couldn't understand the sentence.

Then he heard it again in his head.

Liam was never supposed to be living here.

His fingers tightened around the torn backpack.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Marcus—”

“What does that mean?””

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

Ethan appeared behind her.

“We need to move.””

Marcus turned.

“My son is missing.””

“I know.””

“Then call the police.””

Ethan shook his head.

“Not yet.””

Marcus stepped toward him.

“Not yet?””

“If the wrong people hear that Liam has been taken, they may—”

Marcus grabbed Ethan by the collar.

“My son is twelve years old.””

Ethan didn't fight him.

“I know.””

“Then you have ten seconds to tell me why I shouldn't call the police myself.””

Vanessa grabbed Marcus’s arm.

“Because there are people inside the police department who have been paid.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

“I don't know who.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I don't care what you believe!””

Her voice cracked.

For the first time, Vanessa looked less like the woman who had been arguing over receipts and more like someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy to hold.

“They know about the trust,” she said.

“They know Liam is the beneficiary. They know you didn't know.””

Marcus stared.

“Why didn't I know?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because your father made sure you wouldn't.””

Marcus shook his head.

“My father loved me.””

“He did.””

“Then why?””

“Because he knew what would happen if you knew.””

“What would happen?””

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

He nodded slowly.

She whispered:

“Your brothers would have killed you.””

The words landed harder than a slap.

Marcus stepped back.

“My brothers?””

“Yes.””

“You're saying Daniel and Richard wanted me dead?””

“I’m saying your father believed they would.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That’s insane.””

Ethan opened the black briefcase again.

“Look at this.””

He handed Marcus another document.

It was dated six months before his father died.

Marcus read the first line.

*Confidential Memorandum — Estate Protection Instructions.*

His father’s handwriting filled the page.

Marcus recognized it immediately.

He had spent years looking at those letters.

There was no doubt.

He read.

If Marcus learns about the trust before Liam turns eighteen, the trust becomes vulnerable.

His eyes moved lower.

My sons will attempt to gain control of the assets.

Then another line.

Vanessa is the only person I trust to protect Liam until Marcus can safely assume responsibility.

Marcus looked up.

“That doesn't make sense.””

Vanessa said nothing.

“You were the only person he trusted?””

She nodded.

“Why?””

“Because I promised him.””

“What did you promise?””

“That I would keep Liam safe.””

Marcus looked toward the open window.

“And you failed.””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“I know.””

Marcus turned away.

His mind raced.

He remembered the day Liam had come to live with them.

Vanessa had told him the boy needed stability.

A distant relative had died.

There had been paperwork.

Complications.

Marcus had been traveling constantly because of the company.

He had trusted Vanessa.

He had signed what she put in front of him.

He had never questioned why Liam’s surname was different on some school documents.

He had assumed it was an administrative issue.

He had never asked enough questions.

Now he understood why.

Vanessa had kept him uninformed.

But why?

Marcus looked at Ethan.

“Who is Liam’s mother?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Marcus's voice softened.

“Vanessa.””

She whispered:

“You already know her.””

Marcus frowned.

“No, I don't.””

“You do.””

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Me.””

Marcus went completely still.

Ethan's eyes lowered.

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Liam is my son.””

Marcus stared at her.

The hallway seemed to tilt.

“You told me he was your nephew.””

“I lied.””

“You told me his mother died.””

“I lied.””

“You told me his father was unknown.””

Vanessa began crying.

“I lied.””

Marcus backed away from her.

“How long?””

“Since he was born.””

“Five years?””

“Twelve.””

Marcus looked toward the room where Liam’s bedroom was.

Twelve years.

His entire life.

“Why did you make me believe he wasn't your son?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Because your father knew what would happen.””

“To Liam?””

“To all of us.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You're telling me I've been raising your biological son without knowing?””

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe he was some distant relative?””

“Yes.””

“And you spent thirty thousand dollars on Brandon and Kayden while Liam wore clothes with holes in them?””

Vanessa flinched.

“I was trying to keep attention away from him.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You humiliated him to protect him?””

“I had no choice.””

“You always have a choice.””

“No,” she whispered.

“Not with them.””

“Who are they?””

Vanessa looked toward the front door.

Ethan answered.

“The people who killed your father.””

Marcus's face hardened.

“My father died of a heart attack.””

Ethan stared at him.

“That is what the official report says.””

Marcus felt something cold move through his stomach.

“What are you saying?””

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Your father wasn't alone when he died.””

Marcus remembered.

The hospital room.

The machines.

The doctor saying it had happened quickly.

His brothers arriving before he did.

Vanessa telling him to focus on the funeral.

The memory suddenly felt wrong.

Every piece.

Every detail.

“Who was with him?””

“Your brother Daniel.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Daniel.

Older.

Calm.

Always the reasonable one.

Richard had been the aggressive brother.

Daniel had been the negotiator.

Marcus had trusted Daniel more than anyone.

“What did Daniel do?””

Ethan didn't answer.

Marcus opened his eyes.

“Tell me.””

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

She nodded.

“Daniel changed the medication.””

Marcus stared.

“No.””

“He increased the dosage.””

“No.””

“He made it look accidental.””

Marcus turned away.

He pressed both hands against his face.

His father.

His brother.

The trust.

Liam.

The money.

The missing boy.

It all connected.

But one question remained.

“If you knew all of this,” Marcus said, “why did you stay with me?””

Vanessa looked at him through tears.

“Because your father told me to.””

“That isn't an answer.””

“It is.””

“No. It isn't.””

She stepped closer.

“He told me that if I ever left you, they would know you had discovered the truth.””

Marcus stared.

“He used our marriage as protection.””

“Yes.””

“And the money?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I needed to make it look like I was draining the accounts.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

“If Daniel was watching, he had to believe I was greedy. Selfish. Careless.””

She pointed toward the designer bags.

“Those purchases were deliberate.””

Marcus looked at them.

“You bought all that to make him think you were stealing?””

“Some of it.””

“Some?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Marcus understood.

“Which part wasn't?””

She didn't answer.

Ethan cleared his throat.

“The point is, the trust needed to appear unstable.””

Marcus looked at him.

“And Liam needed to appear worthless.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Yes.””

Marcus looked down at the torn backpack.

His son had paid the price for their deception.

He had been dressed poorly.

Ignored.

Blamed.

Made to feel less important.

All to hide an inheritance he didn't even know existed.

Marcus's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

Nothing.

Then a child's breathing.

Marcus straightened.

“Liam?””

A faint voice answered.

“Dad?””

Marcus's heart nearly stopped.

“Liam! Where are you?””

There was static.

Then Liam whispered:

“I'm okay.””

“Where are you?””

“I don't know.””

“Look around.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because they told me not to.””

Marcus's voice trembled.

“Who has you?””

Silence.

Then Liam said:

“Dad, I saw something.””

“What?””

“Something about Grandpa.””

Marcus looked at Ethan.

“What did you see?””

Liam's breathing quickened.

“A video.””

Marcus froze.

“What video?””

“Grandpa made it.””

The line crackled.

Then Liam whispered:

“He said if anything happened to him, I should give it to you.””

Marcus's heart pounded.

“Where is the video?””

“I don't have it.””

“Then who does?””

A man's voice suddenly came through the phone.

Cold.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Marcus.””

Marcus stopped breathing.

He knew that voice.

He had heard it at board meetings.

At family dinners.

At his father's funeral.

His brother Daniel.

“You have something that belongs to us,” Daniel said.

Marcus stared at the phone.

“What do you want?””

Daniel laughed softly.

“Not what.””

A pause.

“Who.””

Marcus's eyes moved toward Vanessa.

Daniel continued.

“Bring us the folder.””

Marcus tightened his grip.

“And you'll give me my son?””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice became almost gentle.

“We'll give you the truth.””

The call ended.

Marcus lowered the phone.

Ethan looked at him.

“What did he say?””

Marcus stared at the folder in his hand.

Then at the empty bedroom.

Then at Vanessa.

“He wants the folder.””

Ethan nodded.

Marcus slowly opened it.

The final page had been folded in half.

He hadn't noticed it before.

He unfolded it.

There was one handwritten sentence from his father.

Marcus read it once.

Then again.

And his blood ran cold.

*Marcus, if Daniel ever asks you for this folder, do not trust Vanessa.*

He looked up.

Vanessa was standing directly in front of him.

May you like

And for the first time, Marcus wondered whether his wife had been protecting his son—

or protecting herself.
