Chapter 5: The Name on the Bracelet
Vanessa looked at the hospital bracelet.
Her lips trembled.
Marcus held it between them.
“Why does it say Cole?””
She shook her head.
“Because that was his name.””
“Whose?””
“Liam's.””
Marcus stared.
“That doesn't answer anything.””
“It does.””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“Not anymore.””
Brandon and Kayden watched from the hallway.
Marcus pointed toward the stairs.
“Both of you. Downstairs.””
Brandon hesitated.
“Dad—”
“Now.””
They left.
Marcus waited until their footsteps disappeared.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“Tell me the truth.””
She closed her eyes.
“Liam was born twelve years ago.””
“I know.””
“His biological father was Ethan.””
Marcus turned toward the man standing behind him.
Ethan looked down.
Marcus felt something inside him crack.
“You?””
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.””
Vanessa whispered, “I didn't tell you because—”
Marcus raised his hand.
“Don't.””
He looked at Ethan.
“You're Liam's father.””
“Yes.””
“You've known?””
“Since before he was born.””
“And you just walked into my house today?””
“I had to.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You had to?””
“I was trying to protect him.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Marcus held up the bracelet.
“Everyone claims they're protecting Liam.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Yet he's the one wearing ripped clothes.””
She lowered her head.
“I know.””
“Everyone says they love him.””
“I do.””
“Then why did you make him feel like he didn't belong?””
Vanessa began crying.
“Because I needed Daniel to believe Liam wasn't important.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You could have told me.””
“I couldn't.””
“You could have trusted me.””
“I wanted to.””
“But you didn't.””
“No.””
Marcus turned toward Ethan.
“And you?””
“I didn't know if Marcus would believe me.””
“Why wouldn't I?””
“Because Daniel had spent years telling everyone I was a liar.””
Marcus stared at him.
“What did you do?””
Ethan looked toward the floor.
“I left.””
“For how long?””
“Eight years.””
“Why?””
“Because I was scared.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“At least that's honest.””
Ethan took a breath.
“I loved Vanessa.””
Marcus looked at him.
“And Liam?””
“I loved him more.””
“What happened?””
Ethan's jaw tightened.
“Daniel found out about the pregnancy.””
Marcus frowned.
“He threatened you?””
“He threatened Vanessa.””
“How?””
“He said if she didn't give the baby to the family, he'd destroy my business, have me arrested, and make sure Liam disappeared.””
Marcus stared.
“So Vanessa gave him away?””
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I didn't.””
Ethan looked at Marcus.
“We hid him.””
“From Daniel?””
“From everyone.””
Marcus thought about the years.
The school records.
The paperwork.
The strange explanations.
Vanessa's constant insistence that Liam needed to stay away from certain people.
Everything suddenly looked different.
“But I knew him as Liam.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I changed his name.””
“Why?””
“To protect him.””
Marcus looked at the bracelet.
“So Cole was his original name.””
“Yes.””
“And Liam?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“Your father chose it.””
Marcus froze.
“My father?””
“He told me Liam meant protection.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Your father loved that boy.””
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
His father.
Vanessa.
A baby.
There was something in his father's expression Marcus had never seen before.
Tenderness.
Fear.
Pride.
Marcus swallowed.
“Why didn't Dad tell me?””
“Because Daniel was listening.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Vanessa pointed toward the ceiling.
“Your father believed the house was monitored.””
Marcus stared.
“You're saying there were cameras?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“Everywhere.””
Marcus looked around the room.
His skin crawled.
“The kitchen?””
“Yes.””
“The bedrooms?””
“Not Liam's.””
“Why not?””
“Because your father drew the line there.””
Marcus immediately looked at Liam's room.
He remembered how often Vanessa had insisted on privacy.
How she never allowed anyone to renovate that room.
How she'd said Liam needed a quiet place.
Maybe that had been true.
Maybe it had also been the only safe room in the house.
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“How did Liam get taken?””
Ethan's face tightened.
“We don't know.””
Marcus stared.
“Then find out.””
“I will.””
“No.””
Marcus picked up the black box.
“We.””
He opened the flash drive compartment.
There was a tiny USB drive.
Marcus held it up.
“What’s on this?””
“Your father's final recording.””
“Have you seen it?””
“No.””
“Then why did he leave it?””
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
“She doesn't know.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“What don't you know?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I only knew about the trust.””
“Then let's watch it.””
They moved downstairs.
Marcus connected the drive to his laptop.
A video appeared.
The screen showed his father's office.
Marcus recognized the room.
The old leather chair.
The wooden shelves.
The clock behind his desk.
Then his father appeared.
Older.
Tired.
Looking directly into the camera.
Marcus stopped breathing.
His father's voice filled the room.
“Marcus, if you're watching this, then I failed to protect you.””
Marcus sat down.
The recording continued.
“I need you to understand something before you believe anyone.””
His father leaned closer.
“Liam is not the reason your family is in danger.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“He is the reason your family survived.””
The video flickered.
His father continued.
“I made three mistakes.””
A pause.
“I trusted Daniel.””
Marcus's hands tightened.
“I trusted Richard.””
Another pause.
“And worst of all…”
His father looked directly into the camera.
“I trusted Vanessa.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Marcus looked at her.
The video continued.
“She has done terrible things.””
Vanessa began sobbing.
“But I know why.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“Vanessa was forced to choose between two children.””
The screen flickered again.
“Brandon and Kayden were never Daniel's target.””
Marcus's face changed.
His father continued.
“Liam was.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Then back at the screen.
“And that is why she made Liam look neglected.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“She needed Daniel to believe she had no reason to protect him.””
His father paused.
Then said:
“But there is something Vanessa does not know.””
The recording ended.
The laptop screen went black.
Marcus stared.
“What does she not know?””
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Marcus stood.
“Then why would Dad say that?””
A notification appeared on the laptop.
*NEW VIDEO FILE DETECTED.*
Marcus clicked it.
A second video opened.
His father's face appeared again.
But this time, he looked terrified.
“Marcus, if you've reached this recording, then Daniel already knows.””
The image shook.
“Do not bring the trust documents.””
Marcus leaned closer.
“Do not bring the money.””
His father's voice dropped.
“And whatever you do…”
He looked behind him.
“…do not let Vanessa see who Liam's legal father is.””
Marcus froze.
Ethan stared at the screen.
Vanessa whispered:
“What?””
The video cut to black.
Marcus slowly turned toward Ethan.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan looked terrified.
“I don't know.””
Marcus picked up the original trust document.
He scanned the names.
Then stopped.
There was a section he hadn't read.
A legal parentage clause.
Marcus read it once.
Then again.
His face went cold.
“Ethan.””
“Yes?””
“Why does this document list Liam's father as…”
He stopped.
The name on the page wasn't Ethan.
It wasn't Marcus.
It wasn't anyone in the family.
It was a name Marcus had never heard.
And beneath it was a signature dated twelve years earlier.
Vanessa saw the page.
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You know this name.””
She backed away.
“No.””
“You know this name.””
“I don't.””
“You just said no.””
She stared at the document.
Then whispered:
“He was supposed to be dead.””
Marcus's phone rang.
A text appeared.

Then another.
