Chapter 8: The Father Who Waited Outside

Nobody moved.

Daniel stood on the porch.

Marcus stood in the doorway.

And behind Marcus, Nia watched the man who had existed only as a name on a document.

A stranger.

A possible father.

A missing piece of her life.

Daniel looked older than Marcus expected.

Not dangerous.

Not arrogant.

Just tired.

Like someone who had spent years carrying something heavy.

Marcus stepped outside and closed the door behind him.

“What do you want?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I want to see Nia.””

“You’ve had fifteen years.””

The words landed hard.

Daniel looked down.

“I know.””

“Then why now?””

“Because I found out Vanessa finally told you.””

Marcus stared.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Daniel sighed.

“Richard contacted me.””

Marcus remembered the messages.

“Who is Richard?””

“Vanessa’s cousin.””

“Why is he involved?””

Daniel looked toward the house.

“Because he knows what your wife did.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“Don’t call her my wife like you know her.””

Daniel nodded.

“I understand.””

“No, you don’t.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“You don’t get to show up after fifteen years and act like you understand anything.””

Daniel didn’t argue.

That surprised Marcus.

Instead, he said:

“You’re right.””

The answer caught him off guard.

Daniel continued.

“I should have been here.””

“Why weren’t you?””

The man looked away.

“Because every time I tried, I was stopped.””

Marcus shook his head.

“By Vanessa?””

“By her mother.””

“And you just accepted that?””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice cracked slightly.

“I fought.””

“Not hard enough.””

The silence after that was brutal.

Daniel nodded.

“Maybe not.””

Marcus studied him.

“Tell me everything.””

Daniel looked at the house.

Then back at Marcus.

“I was twenty-eight when Vanessa told me she was pregnant.””

“And?””

“I was happy.””

The answer was immediate.

“I wanted a family.””

Marcus didn’t respond.

“I bought a ring.””

That surprised him.

“I was going to propose.””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“Then Vanessa disappeared.””

Marcus frowned.

“She disappeared?””

“She stopped answering calls. She blocked my number.””

“Why?””

“I didn’t know.””

Daniel looked toward the ground.

“Until her mother called me.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“What did she say?””

“She told me Vanessa chose you.””

“Did you believe her?””

“No.””

Daniel looked up.

“I knew Vanessa.””

Marcus said nothing.

“I knew she wouldn’t leave without explaining.””

“So what did you do?””

“I went to her house.””

“And?””

“She told me to leave.””

Marcus felt something twist inside him.

“Vanessa told you?””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“She said she wanted a different life.””

Marcus looked back at the house.

At the woman inside.

The woman who had spent years hiding pieces of herself.

“Did you believe her?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why leave?””

The question hung there.

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Because she looked me in the eyes and told me she hated me.””

Marcus was quiet.

“She was crying when she said it.””

That detail mattered.

Because it meant Daniel had noticed something was wrong.

“I asked her what happened.””

Daniel swallowed.

“She told me if I cared about her, I would walk away.””

Marcus looked down.

“And you did.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked directly at him.

“Because I loved her.””

The answer bothered Marcus.

Because it was the same kind of love he had felt.

The kind that made people believe sacrifice was the right choice.

“What happened after?””

Daniel looked at the house.

“I tried again.””

“When?””

“When Nia was three.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“What?””

“I found out where they lived.””

“And?””

“I went there.””

His voice became quieter.

“Vanessa’s mother answered.””

“What did she say?””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“She told me Nia was happy.””

Marcus clenched his jaw.

“She said Nia had a father.””

The words hurt.

Because Marcus realized he had unknowingly become part of someone else’s lie.

“I asked to see her.””

“And?””

“She refused.””

“Did Vanessa know?””

Daniel looked away.

“Yes.””

Marcus waited.

“She came outside.””

“What did she say?””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“She said she had moved on.””

“And you left?””

“I did.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You left your daughter.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

No excuses.

No defense.

Just guilt.

That somehow made it harder.

The front door opened.

Marcus turned.

Nia stood there.

“Dad.””

Marcus immediately moved toward her.

“Nia, go inside.””

“No.””

Her voice was stronger than before.

“I want to talk to him.””

Daniel looked terrified.

Not because of Marcus.

Because of her.

“Nia…”

She stepped onto the porch.

The man who might be her father stared at her.

Neither spoke.

Finally, Daniel whispered:

“You look like your mother.””

Nia’s expression changed.

“I don’t know if that’s a compliment.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For everything.””

Nia crossed her arms.

“You missed my first day of school.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

“You missed my birthdays.””

“I know.””

“You weren’t there when I was sick.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“Do you know how many times I wondered if something was wrong with me?””

Daniel looked destroyed.

“Nia…”

“No.””

She wiped her face.

“I spent my whole life thinking maybe I wasn’t worth staying for.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

Daniel shook his head.

“That was never true.””

“Then why did everyone leave?””

No one answered.

Because everyone had.

In different ways.

Daniel stepped closer.

“I should have fought harder.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised him.

Nia looked at him.

“You should have.””

Daniel nodded.

“I’m sorry.””

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Daniel reached into his jacket.

“I brought something.””

He pulled out a small box.

Nia looked confused.

“What is it?””

Daniel handed it to her.

“Something I bought before you were born.””

She opened it slowly.

Inside was a tiny silver bracelet.

A small engraved charm hung from it.

Marcus leaned closer.

The engraving said:

*N. Cross*

Nia stared at it.

Daniel whispered:

“I never stopped believing I would give it to you.””

Before anyone could speak, a car stopped outside the house.

Everyone turned.

A man stepped out.

Richard.

He walked toward them holding a folder.

His face was serious.

“I’m sorry to interrupt.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Who are you?””

Richard stopped.

Then looked at Nia.

“I’m the person who knows why your birth certificate was changed.””

He opened the folder.

“And I have proof.””

Marcus took the folder.

The first page was a legal document.

The second page made his blood run cold.

Because it wasn’t about Daniel.

It wasn’t about Vanessa.

It was about him.

*Marcus Hale was listed as the legal father before the amendment.*

He looked up.

“What is this?””

Richard’s expression was grim.

“The reason Vanessa never told you the truth.””

He paused.

“Because legally…”

Richard swallowed.

“You are not just Nia’s father.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

May you like

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“She made sure you would be.””
