Chapter 10: The Signature That Shouldn’t Exist
The hospital file arrived the next morning.
Marcus expected paperwork.
He expected explanations.
He expected another piece of a puzzle that had already become too complicated.
What he did not expect was to see a signature that made his entire body go cold.
They sat in a small conference room at the hospital where Nia had been born.
Marcus sat beside Nia.
Not across from her.
Beside her.
He wanted her to feel what he had failed to show her for years.
That he was staying.
Daniel sat on the other side of the table.
Vanessa sat quietly at the end.
Richard stood near the window.
And across from them was the hospital administrator, a woman named Karen Mitchell.
She placed a thick folder on the table.
“Before we begin, I want to apologize.””
Marcus looked at her.
“For what?””
“For the fact that these records were never properly reviewed.””
His eyes narrowed.
“Meaning?””
Karen opened the folder.
“When a patient requests a correction to a birth record, there is a strict process.””
She turned a page.
“Verification. Documentation. Legal authorization.””
Marcus nodded.
“And?””
Karen looked uncomfortable.
“And the process was not followed.””
Silence.
Nia looked at the papers.
“What does that mean?””
Karen softened.
“It means someone changed important information without proper permission.””
Marcus felt anger rise.
“Who?””
Karen looked down.
“The person who submitted the request was listed as…”
She paused.
“Evelyn Whitmore.””
Vanessa’s mother.
The name sat in the room like a ghost.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You said she died.””
“She did.””
“Then how did she change legal documents?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Richard stepped forward.
“She had power of attorney.””
Everyone looked at him.
Marcus frowned.
“For Vanessa?””
Richard nodded.
“During the pregnancy.””
Marcus turned to Vanessa.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“Because I was sick.””
Marcus’s expression softened slightly.
“What?””
“I had severe complications during pregnancy. I was in and out of the hospital.””
She looked at the floor.
“My mother handled everything.””
Marcus stared at the paperwork.
“So she had authority.””
“Yes.””
Richard added:
“But not unlimited authority.””
Karen nodded.
“Exactly.””
She pointed at a page.
“This document allowed Evelyn to make certain medical decisions during Vanessa’s treatment.””
Marcus leaned closer.
“This says nothing about changing paternity.””
“No.””
Karen flipped another page.
“This signature was outside her authority.””
Marcus looked at the signature.
Then the date.
Then the attached request.
Something felt wrong.
“What is this?””
Karen looked at him.
“A request to remove Daniel Cross from the birth record.””
Daniel looked away.
Marcus noticed.
“You knew?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why does it look like you expected this?””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Because I knew Evelyn would do anything.””
Marcus studied him.
“You’re telling me you knew she was capable of this?””
“Yes.””
“And you still left?””
Daniel looked at Nia.
“I thought leaving was protecting her.””
Nia looked hurt.
Marcus saw it.
Daniel immediately continued.
“I was wrong.””
The room became quiet.
Karen closed the folder.
“There is one more issue.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
She pulled out another document.
“This.””
He took it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
The document wasn’t about Daniel.
It wasn’t about Vanessa’s mother.
It was about him.
A guardianship agreement.
Signed fifteen years ago.
Marcus frowned.
“I don’t understand.””
Karen looked at Vanessa.
“This agreement was created before the adoption.””
Marcus looked at his wife.
“Why?””
Vanessa’s face turned pale.
“I…”
Marcus stood.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
But everyone felt the warning.
“You are not going to tell me you forgot.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I didn’t.””
“Then tell me.””
She closed her eyes.
“When Nia was born, my mother convinced me Daniel would fight for custody.””
Marcus waited.
“He had the right to.””
“Yes.””
“So she created a plan.””
“What plan?””
Vanessa’s voice shook.
“To make sure Nia had a stable father.””
Marcus stared.
“Me.””
“Yes.””
The room felt smaller.
“You didn’t marry me because you loved me.””
Vanessa immediately looked up.
“No.””
The answer was fast.
Too fast.
“I did love you.””
“But?””
She cried.
“But I also needed you.””
Marcus looked away.
Because that was the truth he had been avoiding.
She had loved him.
And used him.
Both could exist.
That was what made it painful.
Karen spoke softly.
“Mr. Hale, there is something else.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
“The adoption process was completed legally.””
He nodded.
“So?””
“But the original agreement included a clause.””
“What clause?””
Karen hesitated.
“A clause stating that if Daniel Cross ever attempted to establish legal contact with Nia, the adoption could be challenged.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Daniel looked shocked.
“I never knew.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Did you?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You knew.””
“I knew my mother wanted it.””
“And you let it exist.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
Nia stared at her mother.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked devastated.
“Because I was afraid.””
Nia shook her head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Her voice cracked.
“But nobody says they were afraid for me.””
Nobody spoke.
Because she was right.
Marcus reached for her hand.
Nia held it.
Karen quietly gathered the documents.
“There is one more reason I contacted you.””
Marcus looked up.
“What reason?””
She slid a final page forward.
“This was attached to Evelyn Whitmore’s personal file.””
Marcus read the first line.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Richard moved closer.
“What does it say?””
Marcus couldn’t answer immediately.
Because the document wasn’t about Nia.
It was about Vanessa.
The title read:
*Emergency Medical Consent Revision.*
Below it was a signature.
Not Evelyn’s.
Not Vanessa’s.
Someone else’s.
Marcus looked up.
“Who is this?””
Karen’s face tightened.
“That is what we were hoping you could tell us.””
Marcus stared at the name.
A name he had never seen before.
A name that somehow had the authority to rewrite his family’s history.
Then Nia leaned closer.
“Dad?””
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed at the bottom of the page.
There was another note.
A handwritten message.
Three words.
*Ask the father.*
Marcus felt a chill.
May you like
Because there was only one father in that room who had not spoken yet.
Daniel.
