Chapter 6: The Name on the Paper
Marcus spent the next hour searching through every document in the house.
Not angrily.
Not desperately.
Quietly.
That scared everyone more.
Anger would have been easier.
Anger burned hot.
Anger disappeared.
But this was something else.
This was a man rebuilding his entire understanding of his life piece by piece.
Vanessa followed him into the office.
“Marcus.””
He opened a drawer.
“Where are the birth records?””
“In the filing cabinet.””
“Which one?””
She pointed.
He unlocked it.
Inside were years of paperwork.
Insurance forms.
School documents.
Medical records.
Everything a family collected over time.
Except one thing.
Nia’s original birth certificate.
Marcus looked through the files again.
Nothing.
“Where is it?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
“I don’t know.””
He turned.
“You don’t know where your daughter’s birth certificate is?””
Her face tightened.
“I have the updated one.””
“Updated?””
The word echoed.
Marcus reached for the folder.
“Show me.””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then handed it over.
He opened it.
There it was.
Nia Hale.
Date of birth.
Hospital.
Mother.
Father.
Marcus’s name.
Everything looked normal.
Too normal.
He looked closer.
The document date.
His eyebrows lowered.
“This was issued three years after she was born.””
Vanessa went silent.
“Why?””
“I told you. I don’t know.””
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew enough to hide it.””
She looked away.
That was answer enough.
A knock came at the door.
They turned.
Nia stood there.
“I found something.””
Marcus immediately moved toward her.
“What?””
She held a small box.
“I found it in the attic.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Nia.””
“What?””
Her mother stepped forward.
“Give it to me.””
Marcus blocked her.
“No.””
Nia looked nervous.
“It was hidden behind old boxes.””
Marcus took the box.
It was covered in dust.
Inside were photographs.
Old letters.
Medical papers.
And one envelope.
Different from the first.
Marcus opened it.
Inside was a copy of a hospital document.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
The room disappeared.
Because the name written under *Father* was not his.
Marcus read it again.
And again.
He couldn’t make his mind accept it.
Vanessa whispered:
“Marcus…”
He looked up.
“Who is Daniel Cross?””
Vanessa went completely still.
Nia looked confused.
Caleb and Ava stood at the doorway.
Nobody spoke.
Marcus held the paper.
“Who is Daniel Cross?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“He was…”
She stopped.
Marcus waited.
“He was someone I knew before you.””
His grip tightened.
“Someone you knew?””
“Yes.””
“And he’s listed as Nia’s father.””
Silence.
Vanessa sat down.
“Marcus, listen.””
“No.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“You let me raise a child while hiding another man’s name.””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She had no answer.
“When Nia graduated?””
Silence.
“When she got married?””
Silence.
“When she had children?””
Vanessa cried.
“I was scared.””
Marcus looked at the paper.
The anger came slowly now.
“You let me love her.””
Vanessa looked up.
“Yes.””
“You let me believe she was mine.””
“Yes.””
“And she is not?””
Nia stepped forward.
“Dad.””
Marcus looked at her.
The pain on her face stopped him.
Because suddenly the question changed.
This wasn’t about biology.
This wasn’t about paperwork.
This was about a fifteen-year-old girl watching her family break apart.
Marcus softened immediately.
“Nia…”
She shook her head.
“Is it true?””
Nobody answered.
That was the worst answer.
“Am I not your daughter?””
Marcus walked to her.
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“You are my daughter.””
“But…”
“No.””
He held her shoulders.
“Listen to me.””
Her eyes filled.
“You are my daughter because I chose you every single day.””
She cried.
“But Dad…”
“I don’t care what a piece of paper says.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“But I do care about the lies.””
Vanessa lowered her head.
Then her phone buzzed again.
Nobody moved.
Another message.
Marcus looked.
The sender was Richard.
This time, the message wasn’t a warning.
It was a photograph.
A man standing outside a building.
A man Marcus had never seen.
Below the image was one sentence.
*Ask Vanessa why Daniel Cross was never allowed to meet his daughter.*
Marcus stared at the photo.
Then slowly looked at his wife.
“Vanessa…”
She covered her face.
And for the first time, Marcus realized the truth was not a single secret.

It was a chain.
And someone had just pulled the first link loose.
