Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Cake

Nobody moved.

The house that had been filled with laughter an hour earlier now felt like a place where every shadow had a secret.

I could hear my own heartbeat.

I could hear Lily crying.

I could hear Ethan breathing beside me.

But the voice outside was the loudest sound of all.

“Ethan.””

Vanessa.

The name felt poisonous.

I stood slowly.

“Stay upstairs with Lily.””

Ethan grabbed my wrist.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””

His face fell.

Maybe because he knew I was right.

Maybe because he knew he had lost the right to ask for my trust.

Another knock.

Harder.

“Open the door.””

I moved toward the stairs.

Ethan followed.

“Sarah, please.””

“No.””

I stopped at the bottom step.

“You’re going to tell me everything.””

“I will.””

“Now.””

He swallowed.

“When I was nineteen, Vanessa and I had a son.””

I stared at him.

“You already told me that.””

“There’s more.””

“There always is.””

His eyes dropped.

“The night he got hurt, I wasn’t there.””

“Where were you?””

He hesitated.

“I left.””

The answer made me angry.

“You left your child?””

“I was scared.””

“You left?””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa was unstable.””

The front door shook slightly.

A hand.

Someone touching the other side.

Ethan continued.

“She believed everyone was trying to take our son away. She became obsessed. She started accusing people.””

“People like you?””

“Yes.””

The hallway light flickered.

I looked toward the door.

“Then what happened?””

Ethan’s voice became quieter.

“The night our son was injured, Vanessa blamed me.””

“Was it your fault?””

“No.””

“But you think it was.””

He didn’t answer.

That told me everything.

The door handle moved.

Lily screamed from upstairs.

“Mommy!””

I ran up two steps.

Then stopped.

Because Ethan said something that made my blood freeze.

“Sarah.””

I turned.

He was staring at the door.

“She doesn’t want Lily.””

“What?””

“She wants you.””

I felt cold.

“Why?””

He looked at the phone.

At the photograph.

At the message.

“Because ten years ago, when her son was dying…”

He paused.

“You were the nurse who saved him.””

Everything went silent.

The memory returned.

The little boy.

The rain.

The woman begging.

The police.

“You knew?””

Ethan nodded.

“I found out years later.””

“You knew I saved your son?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you marry me?””

Pain crossed his face.

“Because I loved you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Sarah—”

“You married me knowing this woman might come back?””

“I thought she was gone.””

The door suddenly opened.

Not all the way.

Just enough.

A woman’s hand appeared around the edge.

Lily screamed.

I pulled her into my arms.

A voice whispered:

“Sarah.””

I looked down the hallway.

Vanessa stepped inside.

She looked exactly like the woman in the photograph.

Older.

Tired.

Broken.

But smiling.

“I’ve waited a long time to meet you again.””

Ethan moved in front of me.

“Vanessa, don’t.””

She laughed softly.

“Still protecting her?””

“You need to leave.””

Her eyes moved to Lily.

Then back to me.

“She doesn’t know, does she?””

My grip tightened around my daughter.

“Know what?””

Vanessa smiled.

“That Lily isn’t the only child you saved.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She took a step forward.

Ethan looked horrified.

“Stop.””

Vanessa ignored him.

She pulled something from her coat pocket.

A photograph.

An old one.

She handed it to me.

My hands shook as I took it.

The picture showed a hospital room.

A young version of me.

Standing beside a small boy.

The boy who had survived.

The boy I had saved.

But there was something written on the back.

A name.

I turned the photograph over.

And my breath disappeared.

Because the name written there was not Ethan’s son.

It was Lily’s.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What did you do?””

Her smile vanished.

Then she whispered:

“Ask your husband why your daughter has the same birthmark as my dead son.””

May you like

And behind me, Ethan whispered the words I never expected to hear.

“Because Lily was never supposed to be ours.””
