Chapter 2: The Woman in the Mirror

Ethan didn’t answer.

That was the moment I knew the truth was worse than whatever he had been hiding.

People lie when they are afraid.

But silence?

Silence happens when someone knows there is no lie big enough to cover what happened.

I held the phone tighter.

The woman in the reflection was blurry, but I could see enough.

Dark hair.

A thin face.

A small scar near her eyebrow.

My chest tightened.

Because I remembered her.

Not clearly.

Not completely.

But enough.

Ten years earlier, before I ever met Ethan, I had been working nights at a small emergency clinic.

One rainy evening, a young woman came in carrying a little boy.

The child couldn’t have been older than three.

He was unconscious.

The woman was crying.

Begging.

“Please,” she had said.

“Save my son.””

I remembered her voice.

I remembered the panic in her eyes.

And I remembered what happened afterward.

The police arrived.

Questions were asked.

The woman disappeared.

The little boy survived.

But I never saw either of them again.

Until now.

“Sarah.””

Ethan’s voice pulled me back.

I looked at him.

“Tell me I’m wrong.””

He said nothing.

“Tell me that woman isn’t someone from your past.””

His jaw tightened.

That was my answer.

Lily was still holding onto me.

I lowered my voice.

“Sweetheart, go sit on the couch with your blanket.””

“But Mommy—”

“I’ll be right here.””

She looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

Finally, she walked away.

The second she was out of earshot, I turned.

“Start talking.””

Ethan sat down slowly.

For the first time in years, he looked older than his age.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I wanted to.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

I waited.

He stared at the floor.

“Before I met you, I had a son.””

The words hit me like a physical blow.

A son.

I felt the room tilt.

“What?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I was nineteen.””

I said nothing.

“I was young. Stupid. I thought I knew everything.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What happened?””

Ethan looked toward the stairs.

“The woman in that picture was named Vanessa.””

The name sounded familiar.

“She was my girlfriend.””

“Your girlfriend?””

He nodded.

“She was pregnant.””

I felt cold.

“Where is your son?””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“He died.””

The room went silent.

I didn’t know what to say.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

He shook his head.

“No. You shouldn’t be.””

“Ethan—”

“Because he didn’t die naturally.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Someone tried to hurt him.””

The phone vibrated again.

Both of us jumped.

A new message appeared.

This time, it wasn’t from an unknown number.

It was from a contact saved in Ethan’s phone.

A name.

A name I had never seen before.

Vanessa.

The message contained one sentence.

“You told her about the boy. Good. Now tell her why her daughter was next.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan stood quickly.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying again.””

“I swear.””

“You knew this woman was coming back.””

“No.””

“You knew something was happening.””

He looked away.

That was enough.

I walked toward the front door.

“Where are you going?””

“To protect Lily.””

“Sarah, wait.””

I turned.

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“I spent seven years trusting you with our daughter. Seven years believing you would protect her.””

“I would.””

“Then why did someone send a picture of her before an accident happened?””

His face fell.

Because he didn’t have an answer.

A loud crash came from upstairs.

We froze.

“Lily.””

I ran.

Ethan followed behind me.

The hallway was dark.

The bedroom door was open.

“Lily?””

No answer.

I rushed inside.

She was sitting on the floor beside her toy box.

Crying.

I dropped beside her.

“What happened?””

She pointed toward the closet.

“She was there.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

“The lady.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“What lady?””

Lily looked at him.

“The one in the mirror.””

Ethan went completely still.

I noticed something then.

Something I had never noticed before.

He wasn’t confused.

He was terrified.

“Ethan,” I whispered.

He looked at me.

“You know she’s here.””

He didn’t deny it.

A slow knock came from downstairs.

Three knocks.

Everyone froze.

The front door.

Someone was outside.

Ethan grabbed my arm.

“Don’t open it.””

“Why?””

“Because if it’s her…”

The knock came again.

Three slow knocks.

Then a woman’s voice floated through the house.

“Ethan?””

Lily screamed.

I looked at my husband.

He looked like he had seen a ghost.

The woman outside spoke again.

“I know you’re in there.””

A pause.

Then:

“I came to take back what you stole from me.””

May you like

Ethan whispered:

“Vanessa.””
