Chapter 13: The Target Was Never Lily

The message from Claire stayed on my phone screen.

It was only a few words.

But they changed everything.

The birthday cake wasn’t meant for Lily.

It was meant for me.

I stared at the photograph attached beneath the message.

The document.

The signature.

Ethan’s signature.

Yesterday’s date.

My hands started shaking.

“Sarah?””

Ethan’s voice came from behind me.

I turned slowly.

For the first time, he looked afraid of me.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Afraid.

“What did you sign yesterday?””

His face changed.

A small movement.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

And I knew.

“You know.””

He swallowed.

“I can explain.””

I closed my eyes.

I was so tired of those words.

Explain.

Everyone always wanted to explain after they had already destroyed something.

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“Not this time.””

The room went silent.

The police officers were still speaking with Ethan’s father.

Vanessa was holding the younger Lily’s hand.

My Lily was standing beside me.

Both girls were watching.

Watching adults break everything they had built.

“What did you sign?””

Ethan looked at the floor.

“It was a transfer agreement.””

My stomach tightened.

“Transfer of what?””

He didn’t answer.

“Ethan.””

His voice broke.

“The house.””

I frowned.

“The house?””

He nodded.

“I was transferring ownership.””

“To who?””

Silence.

That silence told me enough.

“Your father?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at the girls.

Then back at me.

“Someone working for him.””

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan sat down.

“I found out my father wasn’t acting alone.””

The room became colder.

“There was someone else.””

“Who?””

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“You signed documents for someone you didn’t know?””

“I thought I was fixing things.””

I stared at him.

“How?””

He looked exhausted.

“When Claire contacted me, she told me she had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That my father planned everything.””

I waited.

“She said if I helped expose him, she could protect everyone.””

I looked at the document.

“But instead, you signed something yesterday.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His eyes filled.

“Because she threatened me.””

“With what?””

He looked at Lily.

My heart stopped.

“What did she threaten?””

“She said if I didn’t sign, she would tell you something.””

“What?””

“That the accident at the birthday party was my fault.””

The room went silent.

I felt sick.

“Was it?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

Too immediately.

“Then why would she say that?””

Ethan looked away.

Because there was something else.

Something he hadn’t told me.

“Ethan.””

He closed his eyes.

“The cake…”

I waited.

“The cake was supposed to fall.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

He looked at Lily.

“Someone tampered with it.””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“What?””

Ethan continued.

“The support underneath the table was weakened.””

I remembered.

The cake falling.

The screams.

Lily standing there.

Three minutes later, a photograph appeared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought it was my fault.””

“Why?””

His voice cracked.

“Because I was the one who moved the table.””

Silence.

I stared.

“You moved it?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before the party.””

“Why?””

“Because I saw someone near the hallway.””

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

The same answer.

Again.

Always too many unknowns.

“Then why didn’t you say anything?””

“Because I recognized something.””

“What?””

He looked at the two girls.

“A bracelet.””

I froze.

“What bracelet?””

“The same symbol my father used on his documents.””

The room went quiet.

Ethan pulled out his phone.

He opened a photo.

A small mark.

A circle with a line through it.

I recognized it.

Because I had seen it before.

On the envelope Claire sent.

On the hospital documents.

On the old records.

“What is that?””

Ethan whispered:

“It belonged to a private organization.””

My stomach tightened.

“Organization?””

“My father called them guardians.””

I almost laughed.

Guardians.

People always gave beautiful names to ugly things.

“What did they guard?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Families.””

The answer made no sense.

Until it did.

“They chose families?””

He nodded.

“They believed they could create perfect bloodlines.””

I looked at my daughters.

Two children who had been turned into pieces on a board.

“Who leads them?””

Ethan looked toward his father.

“He never told me.””

A nurse suddenly rushed into the room.

“Excuse me.””

Everyone turned.

“The man in the bed is missing.””

The room froze.

“What?””

The nurse looked terrified.

“He disappeared.””

The police moved immediately.

But I already knew.

Someone had helped him leave.

Someone who knew the hospital.

Someone who knew our secrets.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

Unknown number.

This time there was a video.

I pressed play.

The screen showed my house.

The birthday party.

The hallway.

The person filming walked slowly through the rooms.

Then the camera stopped.

At the mirror.

The same mirror from the photograph.

A voice whispered:

“You’re looking for the wrong person.””

The camera moved.

A woman stepped into view.

Not Vanessa.

Not Claire.

Not Emma.

Someone else.

Someone I had never seen before.

Then she said:

“Sarah, you need to know what Ethan’s father was protecting.””

She smiled.

“And why you were chosen.””

The video ended.

A final message appeared.

“Come alone if you want the truth.””

I looked at Ethan.

For once, he didn’t tell me not to go.

He only whispered:

“Sarah…”

I looked at my daughters.

Then at the phone.

Because I knew.

Whatever happened next would finally reveal why all of this started.

And who had been watching us from the beginning.
