Chapter 8: The Dead Doctor's Last Confession

The name Victor Hale had haunted the night like a ghost.

Now his body had appeared in Vanessa's car, and Nia was insisting that she had watched him die seventeen years earlier.

Daniel moved toward the door.

“I'm calling Ortiz back.””

Adrian caught his arm.

“No.””

Daniel pulled free.

“You don't give me orders.””

“Listen to me. If Hale is dead, there are people who will do anything to keep his records buried.””

“And if he's been dead for seventeen years, how do you explain the body in the trunk?””

Adrian's face tightened.

“I don't know.””

“Then stop pretending you do.””

Maya stood between them.

“Everyone needs to stop shouting.””

Neither man listened.

Adrian turned to his guards.

“Get the car ready.””

Daniel drew his weapon.

“Nobody is leaving this room.””

One guard reached beneath his jacket.

Maya screamed.

“STOP!””

Every head turned.

She stepped toward Adrian.

“You want your son back? Then help us find out who he is. You want the truth about Rebecca? Then stop treating every person in this room like an enemy.””

Adrian stared at her.

For the first time, the powerful businessman seemed uncertain.

Then he nodded to his guards.

They lowered their hands.

Daniel slipped his phone into his pocket.

“Ortiz is securing the scene. We wait until she confirms the body's identity.””

Nia shook her head.

“You don't understand. If that's really Victor, then someone has found the old records.””

“What records?”” Maya asked.

Nia looked at the file.

“The original birth ledger. The one that lists every child born at St. Catherine's that night.””

Daniel frowned.

“You said the ledger was missing.””

“It was.””

“Then where is it now?””

Nia looked toward the floor.

“I buried it.””

Maya blinked.

“Where?””

“In the cemetery where Rebecca's baby was supposed to be buried.””

Adrian grabbed the back of a chair.

“You buried my son?””

“No!”” Nia cried.

“I buried the box containing the records. The grave was empty.””

Maya felt a fresh wave of confusion.

“Whose grave?””

Nia swallowed.

“The grave marked with your name.””

Nobody spoke.

Nia continued, her voice trembling.

“After Rebecca disappeared, Victor told the hospital board that both babies had died. He produced two death certificates and demanded that the records be sealed. I knew the documents were false, so I stole the original ledger.””

“Why didn't you go to the police?”” Maya asked.

“Because the police officer who took my statement was the same man who had helped Victor remove the children from the nursery.””

Daniel looked at Captain Reeves's name on his phone.

“Who was the officer?””

Nia's answer came quietly.

“Franklin Reeves.””

Daniel went rigid.

“My captain?””

Nia nodded.

“He was a junior detective then. He helped Victor cover up the disappearance because Victor had promised him a share of the research foundation's money.””

Adrian cursed under his breath.

Daniel stared at the wall.

“My captain has been hiding this for seventeen years.””

“And he wasn't the only one,” Nia said.

She turned toward Marcus.

“Your father helped them too.””

Marcus looked as though he had been struck.

“My father died when I was twelve.””

“Your biological father,” Nia clarified.

“The man who raised you wasn't your biological father.””

Maya watched Marcus's face.

He shook his head.

“No. That's not possible.””

Nia's voice softened.

“Marcus, you remember the envelope your mother kept in her sewing box?””

He stared at her.

“How do you know about that?””

“Because she brought it to me after you started working at the hospital. She told me she had found your original birth certificate and didn't know what to do with it.””

Marcus's hands began to shake.

“What did it say?””

Nia looked at him.

“Your biological father was Thomas Johnson.””

Maya's heart stopped.

Thomas Johnson.

Her mother's first husband.

The man Marcus had believed was dead before Maya's birth.

Marcus sank into a chair.

“No.””

Nia nodded through her tears.

“Thomas was your half-brother. Your mother had you before she married him, and your father agreed to raise you as his own. You grew up believing you were an only child.””

Marcus covered his face.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

“Because the family concealed it to protect your mother.””

Maya stared at her father.

The man who had raised her had spent his life believing he was someone he wasn't, just as she had.

But the realization didn't erase what he had done.

It only made the lies more complicated.

Daniel's phone rang again.

He answered.

“Ortiz?””

The deputy's voice was sharp and urgent.

“We have identification. The fingerprints match Victor Hale.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Any sign of Vanessa?””

“Not yet. But there's something else.””

“What?””

“The body has been dead for less than twelve hours.””

Nia stopped breathing.

Daniel looked at her.

“Are you sure?””

“Positive. The medical examiner estimates the time of death between noon and three this afternoon.””

Maya remembered the previous day.

Her mother had been preparing hot chocolate in the kitchen. Vanessa had been smiling at the school ceremony. Marcus had been adjusting his tie in front of the mirror.

And somewhere, Victor Hale had been alive.

Daniel ended the call.

Nia whispered, “Then I didn't see him die.””

Adrian looked at her.

“You said you watched someone kill him.””

“I watched someone who looked exactly like him.””

Maya stepped forward.

“Another twin?””

Nia shook her head.

“No. A man wearing his face.””

Daniel went very still.

“Plastic surgery?””

“Perhaps. Or a disguise. I never saw the man's face clearly.

I heard his voice. I saw his hands. He wore Victor's watch, his ring, even the same shoes.””

Adrian stared at her.

“Who was he?””

Nia looked at Maya.

“I think it was someone who wanted everyone to believe Victor Hale was dead.””

Daniel opened his phone and pulled up the photograph of the body.

He enlarged the image.

A gold ring gleamed on the dead man's right hand.

Maya leaned closer.

“That's the same ring from the hospital footage.””

Daniel nodded.

“But look at the wrist.””

A dark tattoo circled the man's skin.

Three small black lines crossed by a fourth.

Maya had seen that mark before.

On the security guard at the school.

She closed her eyes, trying to remember.

Then it came to her.

The guard had worn a black wristwatch. When he reached for the keys, his sleeve had slipped back.

The tattoo had been there.

Maya looked at Daniel.

“The man who locked my mother in the room had that mark.””

Daniel pulled up the photograph again.

“Then either the guard is connected to Hale, or someone has been using the same symbol.””

Adrian took out his phone.

He searched through a series of photographs, then held one up.

A man stood beside Victor Hale at a hospital fundraiser. His face was partly obscured by a crowd, but the tattoo on his wrist was visible.

Adrian pointed to him.

“That's Nathan Vale. Hale's head of security.””

“Where is he now?”” Daniel asked.

“Missing for six years.””

Nia let out a strangled cry.

“He was the man who took Rebecca.””

Adrian turned sharply.

“What?””

“The night she disappeared from the safe house, I saw a car leaving. Nathan was driving. I followed him as far as the highway, but he vanished.””

Maya stared at the photograph.

“So Nathan Vale pretended to be Victor Hale, killed the real Victor today, and took Rebecca seventeen years ago?””

“It's possible,” Daniel said.

“But we still need evidence.””

Adrian's phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”” Maya asked.

He turned the phone toward her.

An email had arrived from an address that contained only a string of numbers.

The subject line read:

*THE SON YOU BURIED IS ALIVE.*

Adrian opened it.

A photograph appeared.

A young man stood outside a university building, carrying a backpack and laughing at something someone had said off-camera.

He looked about eighteen.

Dark hair.

Strong jaw.

A small crescent-shaped birthmark near his left shoulder, visible above the collar of his T-shirt.

Maya stared.

The mark was identical to hers.

Beneath the photograph was a message.

*You have twenty-four hours to identify the girl who was switched with him. Otherwise, both children will disappear.*

Maya looked up.

“Who is he?””

Adrian's lips parted.

“My son.””

Daniel examined the photograph.

“Do you know his name?””

Adrian shook his head.

“No. But I know where this picture was taken.””

He pointed to the university building.

“That's Westbridge University. I funded its medical research center.””

Maya stared at the young man's face.

For the first time, she saw something familiar in a stranger.

Not a memory.

Not a resemblance she could explain.

Just the unsettling sense that her life had been moving toward this person long before she knew he existed.

Adrian looked at her.

“If he's my son, then the girl who was switched with him could be you.””

Maya shook her head.

“Or I could be the girl who was supposed to die.””

Nia reached for her.

“Baby, whatever the records say, you belong with me.””

Maya let her mother hold her hand.

“I know.””

But the photograph remained on the table.

The boy looked so ordinary.

He could have been any student, walking to class, worrying about exams, wondering whether his friends would show up for dinner.

He had no idea that powerful people were searching for him.

He had no idea that someone had buried a false death certificate under his name.

And he had no idea that a girl he had never met might be the only person who could prove who he was.

Daniel's phone rang again.

He listened, then slowly lowered it.

“Ortiz found something in the trunk.””

“What?”” Maya asked.

“A second phone. It belongs to Vanessa.””

“Can you track it?””

“We already did.””

Daniel looked at the map on his screen.

The signal was coming from a residential address three miles away.

Adrian recognized the street immediately.

His face went pale.

“That's Rebecca's old house.””

Nia stood so abruptly that her chair fell backward.

“No.””

Maya grabbed her arm.

“What's wrong?””

Nia stared at the map.

“Rebecca's house was demolished twelve years ago.””

Daniel enlarged the location.

The signal was coming from beneath the property.

A basement.

An underground room.

And on the map, beside the blinking location marker, someone had entered a label.

*PATIENT 001.*

Adrian looked at Maya.

“That's the first patient in the research program.””

“Who?””

He swallowed.

“Rebecca Cole.””

Nia began to cry.

Then Maya's phone rang.

An unknown number.

She answered.

A woman's voice came through, soft and exhausted.

“Maya?””

Maya froze.

“Who is this?””

“My name is Rebecca.””

Adrian dropped his phone.

The woman continued.

“I know what they told you about me. I know what they told you about your mother. But before you believe another word they say, you need to understand one thing.””

Maya's heart pounded.

“What?””

Rebecca's voice broke.

“I'm not the woman who gave birth to you.””

A pause.

May you like

Then she whispered, “I'm the woman who was supposed to raise you.””

The call ended.
