Chapter 5: Room 417

At 11:18 p.m., Maya and Daniel reached St. Catherine's Medical Center.

The hospital stood at the edge of the city, its upper floors dark and its entrance blocked by temporary construction barriers. A banner announced a future redevelopment project. Wind snapped the loose corners against the metal fencing.

Maya stared at the building.

“People were born here.””

Daniel switched off the headlights.

“Thousands.””

“And someone decided my birth was worth covering up.””

“Maybe.””

She turned toward him.

“You're still doing that.””

“Doing what?””

“Giving everyone the benefit of the doubt except the people who are actually trying to help.””

Daniel sighed.

“I'm trying not to give you a theory that might destroy you before we have proof.””

“My life is already destroyed.””

“No, Maya. Your understanding of your life has been shattered. Those aren't the same thing.””

She looked away.

For a moment, she hated him for saying something sensible.

Then she noticed a light flicker behind a boarded window on the third floor.

“Someone's inside.””

Daniel followed her gaze.

He took his phone out, photographed the window, and sent the image to an encrypted contact.

“I'm notifying the one officer I still trust.””

“Who?””

“Deputy Lena Ortiz.””

“Is she actually trustworthy?””

“She once arrested her own brother for stealing evidence from an investigation.””

Maya raised an eyebrow.

“That's either reassuring or deeply concerning.””

“Both.””

They crossed the parking lot and entered through a side door Daniel opened with a narrow metal tool.

Inside, the air smelled of damp plaster and disinfectant. Their footsteps echoed through a deserted corridor lined with peeling paint. Plastic sheets covered the floors, and abandoned wheelchairs sat beneath dust-covered signs.

Maya switched on her flashlight.

A directory hung beside the elevator.

*BASEMENT LEVEL: MEDICAL RECORDS AND ARCHIVES.*

Daniel pressed the elevator button.

Nothing happened.

“Of course,” Maya muttered.

They took the stairs.

On the basement landing, Maya noticed a small brass plaque screwed into the wall.

*ROOM 417 — RESTRICTED ARCHIVE.*

The door stood at the end of a narrow corridor.

It was newer than the surrounding doors, reinforced with steel, and fitted with a keypad.

Maya took out Vanessa's key.

It slid into a narrow slot beneath the keypad.

She turned it.

Nothing happened.

Daniel crouched beside the lock.

“Nia was right. It doesn't open this door.””

Maya examined the key.

A small number had been stamped into the metal near its teeth.

*B-17.*

She turned toward the basement staircase.

“Maybe it opens something on level B.””

Daniel followed her gaze.

“There's another level beneath this one?””

“There's a sign beside the elevator. It said basement level, plural. Medical records and archives.””

“That doesn't mean there's a second basement.””

Maya pointed toward the stairs.

“Then let's find out.””

They descended another flight.

At the bottom, a steel door stood slightly open.

Beyond it was a narrow service passage with exposed pipes running along the ceiling.

Maya inserted the key into a small lock beside the door.

It turned smoothly.

The door opened.

Inside, rows of metal shelves stretched into darkness. Cardboard boxes sat beneath yellowed labels. A broken clock hung above a filing cabinet.

At the far end of the room stood a single wooden desk.

On it lay a photograph of Nia.

She was younger, perhaps twenty-three, wearing blue hospital scrubs and holding a newborn against her chest.

Beside the photograph sat a sealed envelope.

Maya approached it slowly.

Her name was written across the front.

*MAYA ELIZABETH JOHNSON.*

Daniel moved beside her.

“Don't open it yet.””

“Why?””

“Because it was placed here recently.””

“How can you tell?””

“The dust.””

He pointed to the desk. A clean rectangular outline surrounded the envelope, indicating that something had been sitting there before it was removed.

Maya looked around.

“What was here?””

Daniel examined the empty space.

“Something heavier than the envelope.””

A sound came from behind the shelves.

Metal scraping against metal.

Daniel immediately drew his weapon.

“Who's there?””

Silence.

Then a woman's voice answered.

“You shouldn't have brought her.””

Maya's flashlight shook.

A figure stepped from behind the shelving.

She wore a dark coat and carried a canvas bag. Her hair was streaked with gray, and a pale scar crossed her left cheek.

Maya knew that face.

It was the woman from the photograph.

The woman who looked exactly like Nia.

But there was something different about her now.

Nia's face had always softened when she looked at Maya.

This woman's expression remained cold.

Daniel raised his weapon.

“Elena Reyes?””

The woman nodded.

“Put that down, Detective.””

“Not until you explain why a dead woman is standing in front of me.””

Elena looked at Maya.

“Because the dead are sometimes more useful than the living.””

Maya stepped forward.

“Are you my mother?””

Elena's eyes flickered.

Then she shook her head.

“No.””

Maya felt the answer like a slap.

“But you look exactly like Nia.””

“We were sisters.””

The room went silent.

Daniel lowered his weapon slightly.

“Sisters?””

“Twins,” Elena replied.

“Identical twins.””

Maya stared at her.

Her mother had never mentioned having a sister.

Not once.

Elena placed the canvas bag on the desk.

“Nia told you about the babies?””

“She told me not to come here.””

“Then for once in her life, she gave you good advice.””

Maya's anger surged.

“Where is she?””

Elena's gaze moved toward the ceiling.

“Alive, last I heard.””

“Where?””

“If I knew, I wouldn't be standing here.””

Maya grabbed the edge of the desk.

“Everyone keeps saying they want to protect me, but nobody will tell me anything! My father lied. My stepmother tried to stop my mother from leaving a locked room.

A detective is investigating a woman who supposedly died twenty years ago. And now you appear out of nowhere, looking like the woman who raised me, and tell me you're her sister.””

Elena watched her quietly.

Then she said, “You're right.””

Maya stopped.

“What?””

“You have every reason to be angry.””

Elena opened the canvas bag and removed a thick file.

“Seventeen years ago, two babies were born at St. Catherine's within eleven minutes of each other. One belonged to Adrian Cole and his wife, Rebecca. The other belonged to my sister Nia and her husband, Thomas.””

Maya frowned.

“My mother was married before Marcus?””

Elena nodded.

“Thomas Johnson died before you were born. Nia was working at the hospital, trying to survive on her own.””

“What happened to the babies?””

Elena placed two photographs on the desk.

One showed a newborn with a small crescent-shaped mark near his shoulder.

The other showed a baby wrapped in a striped blanket.

Maya stared at them.

“Which one is me?””

“That's what we spent seventeen years trying to prove.””

“Why?””

“Because the hospital's records were altered. The baby identified as Adrian Cole's son disappeared. The baby identified as Nia's daughter was declared dead. Yet Nia went home with a living child.””

Maya's throat tightened.

“So she stole Adrian Cole's baby?””

Elena shook her head.

“No. She took home the baby who had been placed in her arms.””

“Who placed the baby there?””

“I did.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You switched the babies?””

Elena looked at him.

“I moved them because someone was trying to kill one of them.””

Maya felt dizzy.

“Which one?””

Elena hesitated.

“The Cole baby.””

“Why?””

“Because his father had discovered something about the hospital's research program. Something that could destroy several powerful people.””

Maya stared at the photographs.

“Babies were being used in medical experiments?””

“No,” Elena said sharply.

“Not like that. The program involved a confidential genetic study, and the adults who controlled it were willing to do terrible things to keep its findings hidden. The children were never supposed to be harmed, but one doctor decided that a child could be used as leverage against his father.””

Daniel's expression darkened.

“Dr. Victor Hale.””

Elena nodded.

“He falsified records, arranged the disappearance of medical files, and threatened to expose Adrian Cole as an unfit parent unless he agreed to fund the research program.””

“Why would Adrian agree to that?””

“Because he believed his son was dying. Hale told him the research was the only chance to save the child.””

Maya looked at the photographs again.

“And what did you do?””

“I moved the babies. I thought I could protect them until I found someone who would listen.””

“Then why did my mother raise one of them under a false name?””

“Because the plan fell apart. Someone discovered the switch. Thomas was dead, Nia was terrified, and I was being hunted. She took the child and disappeared.””

Maya's mind raced.

“So I could be Adrian Cole's son.””

“Or you could be Nia's daughter.””

“But you said the Cole baby disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“Then which baby did my mother take home?””

Elena looked at her.

“I don't know.””

Maya slammed her hand against the desk.

“Stop saying that!””

Elena didn't flinch.

“You want certainty. I understand. But the only person who knew the answer for sure was the nurse who carried the babies out of the nursery.””

“Who was she?””

Elena's lips parted.

Before she could answer, a loud crash echoed from the corridor.

Daniel spun toward the door.

“Police! Hands where I can see them!””

A burst of gunfire shattered the silence.

Daniel grabbed Maya and pulled her behind the desk.

Wood splintered above their heads.

Maya screamed.

Elena dropped to the floor and reached inside her coat.

Daniel fired twice toward the doorway.

Someone shouted.

Footsteps thundered down the corridor.

Then the room went silent.

Daniel looked over the desk.

“Everyone alive?””

Maya nodded, trembling.

Elena slowly rose.

A dark stain spread across the sleeve of her coat.

“You're bleeding!”” Maya shouted.

“It's nothing.””

“That's not nothing!””

Elena pressed a hand against her arm.

“Listen to me. You need to get out of here.””

Daniel moved toward the door.

“Not without identifying the shooter.””

“You won't find him,” Elena said.

“He knows this building better than you do.””

She grabbed the file from the desk and shoved it into Maya's hands.

“Take this.””

Maya stared at her.

“What is it?””

“Your mother's original medical record. The one that proves Nia never gave birth at St. Catherine's.””

Maya's fingers tightened around the file.

“Then whose baby did she take home?””

Elena's expression broke.

For the first time, Maya saw tears in her eyes.

“She took home the baby who was supposed to die.””

A siren sounded in the distance.

Daniel looked toward the corridor.

“We have to move.””

Elena shook her head.

“No. You two go. I'll draw them away.””

Maya grabbed her wrist.

“You're not leaving me with another mystery!””

Elena looked directly at her.

“Then remember this. Your mother's name isn't the only thing that was stolen.””

She reached into her bag and removed a small recording device.

“Listen to the last file.””

Maya pressed the button.

A man's voice filled the room.

Adrian Cole.

“If my son is alive, I want him brought home. If he's dead, I want the person responsible to confess. And if the child being raised as Nia Johnson's daughter is actually mine, then every person who helped conceal the truth will answer for it.””

The recording clicked off.

Maya looked at Elena.

“Where did you get that?””

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“From the man who paid me to switch the babies.””

Daniel raised his weapon again.

“Who paid you?””

Elena looked toward the doorway.

May you like

Then she whispered a name that made Maya's blood turn to ice.

“Marcus Johnson.””
