Chapter 7: The Mother Who Stole Two Babies
The second lock clicked open.
Maya stood motionless in the darkness, the file clutched against her chest, while Adrian Cole's words continued to echo inside her head.
Neither of those babies was my biological child.
And the woman who switched them is standing right beside you.
Nia pulled desperately against her restraints.
“Adrian, don't you dare do this!””
A ceiling light flickered on.
Behind the steel door, someone turned a handle.
Marcus raised his gun.
“Everybody stay back!””
The door swung inward.
A man in an expensive charcoal suit stepped into the room, accompanied by two men wearing black jackets. He looked older than the photograph Maya had seen, with silver hair, tired eyes, and a thin scar beneath his chin.
He didn't look like a monster.
That was what frightened Maya most.
Monsters were supposed to announce themselves.
Adrian Cole simply straightened his cuffs and looked around the room as though he had arrived for a business meeting.
“Marcus,” he said.
“Put the gun down.””
Marcus's hand trembled.
“You promised she would be safe.””
“She is safe.””
“You locked her in a basement!””
“Because you brought her into a situation you couldn't control.””
Marcus stepped in front of Maya.
“She isn't yours.””
Adrian's expression hardened.
“Move.””
“No.””
One of Adrian's men reached for Marcus's arm.
Marcus swung the gun toward him.
“Touch me and I'll shoot.””
Maya grabbed her father's sleeve.
“Dad, please.””
He glanced at her.
For one brief second, she saw the man who used to sit on the edge of her bed and tell her that nothing bad could happen while he was there.
Then she remembered the money.
The altered birth certificate.
The agreement requiring him to tell the world she was dead.
She released his sleeve.
Adrian noticed.
“That's the problem with secrets, Marcus,” he said.
“Eventually, the people you're protecting stop trusting you.””
Nia spat at him.
“You have no right to lecture anyone about secrets.””
Adrian looked at her with quiet contempt.
“And you have no right to pretend you saved those children.””
Maya stepped forward.
“Enough! You keep talking about children as if we're objects you can move around a room. Tell me what happened.””
Adrian studied her.
“You deserve the truth.””
“Then tell it.””
He glanced at Nia.
“Ask your mother why she arranged Rebecca's death.””
Nia's face went white.
Maya stared at her.
“Mom?””
Nia shook her head.
“He's lying.””
Adrian took a folded document from his jacket.
“This is a copy of the original hospital report. Rebecca Cole died at 3:12 a.m. on October 29, seventeen years ago. Her death was recorded as a sudden cardiac event.””
He placed the document on the table.
“Three hours earlier, she had delivered twins.””
Maya looked at the report.
Two names appeared beneath the heading for newborn registrations.
Baby A.
Baby B.
Beside Baby A was a handwritten notation.
*Male. Stable.*
Beside Baby B:
*Female. Critical.*
Maya swallowed.
“Which one survived?””
Adrian ignored the question.
“Rebecca had discovered that Dr. Hale was falsifying genetic research records. She intended to expose him. She also knew that the research foundation had been using confidential patient information to secure private funding.””
Daniel, standing near the door, interrupted.
“Where does the baby switch fit into this?””
Adrian turned toward him.
“Rebecca was afraid that if Hale couldn't control her, he would use her children against her. She asked Nia, her nurse and trusted friend, to protect them.””
Nia shook her head.
“That's not what happened.””
Adrian continued as though he hadn't heard her.
“On the night Rebecca died, Nia removed two infants from the nursery. One was my son, according to the records. The other was the daughter of a patient named Elena Reyes.””
Maya felt her pulse quicken.
“But Elena was supposedly my biological mother.””
“Supposedly,” Adrian repeated.
He moved closer to the table.
“The records were deliberately confused. Names were changed. Blood samples disappeared.
Dr. Hale told me my son had died, then demanded that I continue funding his research if I wanted the truth.””
“Why would you believe him?”” Maya asked.
“Because he showed me a death certificate and a body in a hospital morgue.””
Maya felt sick.
“Whose body?””
“A newborn's.””
The room fell silent.
Adrian's voice lowered.
“I buried a child I believed was my son. For seventeen years, I thought someone had stolen the only other baby who might have survived.””
Maya stared at him.
“And now you think I'm that baby?””
“I think you may be one of the children involved.””
“One of the children?”” she repeated.
“You said both survived.””
Adrian nodded.
“Because they did.””
He turned toward Nia.
“Tell her.””
Nia's lips trembled.
“I was supposed to protect Rebecca's children,” she whispered.
“That was all. I was supposed to keep them away from Hale until we could find someone who would expose him.””
“Then why did you change the records?”” Maya demanded.
“Because someone came into the nursery and tried to take one of the babies. I didn't know which child they wanted. I panicked.””
“Who came into the nursery?””
Nia looked at Adrian.
He didn't answer.
Instead, he pulled another document from his jacket.
It was a photograph of a hospital employee badge.
The picture showed a younger Marcus Johnson.
Maya's father.
Her knees weakened.
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Don't,” he whispered.
Adrian placed the photograph beside the hospital report.
“Your father worked security at St. Catherine's before he became a real estate contractor. He was on duty the night Rebecca died.””
Maya turned toward Marcus.
“You worked at the hospital?””
“Yes.””
“You told me you met Mom at a community college.””
“I did.””
“Then why didn't you tell me this?””
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“Because I was ordered not to.””
“By whom?””
“Victor Hale.””
Adrian nodded.
“Marcus was the last person to see Rebecca alive.””
Nia began to cry.
“That isn't true.””
Adrian looked at her.
“Then tell us what happened.””
For several seconds, Nia struggled against the restraints.
Finally, she whispered, “Rebecca didn't die in the hospital.””
Maya stared at her.
“What?””
“She was alive when we left.””
Adrian's expression changed.
“What did you say?””
Nia's voice broke.
“Rebecca was alive. I took her out through the service entrance. I thought if we could get her away from Hale, she could expose everything.””
Adrian stepped toward her.
“You told me she was dead.””
“I was told she died later.””
“By whom?””
Nia looked at Marcus.
He lowered his head.
Maya felt her chest tighten.
“Dad?””
Marcus's eyes filled with tears.
“I drove the car.””
Adrian's two men exchanged glances.
Maya took a step backward.
“You helped Mom escape?””
Marcus nodded.
“We drove Rebecca to a safe house outside the city. She was weak, but she was alive. Nia stayed with her while I went back to the hospital.””
“What happened when you returned?””
“I found Victor Hale waiting for me.””
Marcus swallowed.
“He showed me a photograph of you.””
Maya froze.
“A photograph of me?””
“You were a newborn. He told me that if I ever revealed what happened that night, he'd make sure you disappeared. He said he had people everywhere.””
“And you believed him?””
“I was twenty-six years old. I had no money, no power, and no idea who I could trust.””
“So you lied to me for seventeen years.””
“Yes.””
The answer was almost unbearable in its simplicity.
Adrian struck the table with his palm.
“Where is Rebecca?””
Marcus looked at him.
“I don't know.””
“You drove her away!””
“And I never saw her again.””
Nia sobbed.
“I went back to the safe house the following morning. The room was empty. Rebecca was gone, and someone had left a note saying she would be killed if I tried to find her.””
Maya looked between them.
“Then who died in the hospital?””
Nobody answered.
Adrian turned toward his men.
“Search the building. Find the original archive.””
One man nodded and left.
The other stayed near the door.
Maya glanced at the file she had been holding.
The handwritten notes.
The two baby photographs.
The message about the second baby.
Something in the file had bothered her from the beginning.
She opened it again and examined the hospital records.
Two infants.
One boy.
One girl.
But the names had been crossed out.
Beneath the red ink, she could make out the faint outline of a different notation.
*Twin A: blood type O-negative.*
*Twin B: blood type AB-positive.*
Maya remembered a conversation with her mother when she was fourteen.
She had needed a school medical form completed, and Nia had laughed when Maya complained about having her blood drawn.
“You've got your father's stubbornness and my blood type,” she'd said.
Maya had asked what her blood type was.
Nia had told her.
O-negative.
Maya stared at the paper.
Then she looked at Adrian.
“What is your blood type?””
He frowned.
“AB-positive.””
“And Rebecca's?””
“O-negative.””
Maya's heart hammered.
“Then both babies could have inherited different blood types.””
“Correct,” Adrian said.
“But if I'm O-negative, that doesn't prove I'm Nia's daughter. It could mean I'm Rebecca's daughter.””
Adrian nodded slowly.
“Exactly.””
Maya looked at Nia.
“Why didn't you tell me about Rebecca?””
Nia's tears fell freely now.
“Because I promised her I would keep you safe.””
“Which one of us?””
Nia looked at her.
For a moment, her face seemed to collapse under the weight of seventeen years of silence.
Then she whispered, “Both.””
Maya felt a terrible cold settle in her chest.
“Both what?””
Nia took a trembling breath.
“Both babies were placed in my care that night. One was a boy. One was a girl.””
Maya couldn't move.
“Where is the boy?””
Nia looked toward Adrian.
“He was raised by someone who never knew the truth.””
Adrian's face drained of color.
“Who?””
Nia's eyes returned to Maya.
“Your father.””
Marcus lifted his head.
“No.””
Nia's voice became firmer.
“Marcus, look at her.””
He stared at Maya.
Nia continued.
“You raised the girl because you believed she was mine. But the boy—the child you were told had died—was never missing. He was taken home by a different family under a different name.””
Maya's hands went numb.
Adrian backed away from the table.
“Who has my son?””
Nia closed her eyes.
“I don't know his name.””
“Then how can you possibly know he's alive?””
“Because I received a photograph of him three months ago.””
Adrian grabbed the edge of the table.
“Where is it?””
Nia looked directly at Maya.
“Vanessa has it.””
At that exact moment, Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
A woman's frantic voice filled the room.
“Detective Brooks, it's Deputy Ortiz. We've found Vanessa Johnson's car outside the old hospital.””
Daniel straightened.
“Is she there?””
“No. But there's a body in the trunk.””
Maya felt the blood drain from her face.
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Who is it?””
Ortiz hesitated.
Then she spoke four words that made Adrian Cole stagger backward.
“It's Dr. Victor Hale.””
And Nia began screaming.
“NO! THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE! HE WAS ALIVE WHEN I LEFT HIM!””
Maya turned toward her mother.
“What do you mean, when you left him?””
May you like
Nia looked at her daughter with absolute terror.
“Because seventeen years ago, I watched someone kill him.””
