Chapter 7: The Enemy Inside the House

The phone remained silent in Daniel’s hand.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The last words Evelyn had spoken hung in the air like a warning.

*The person who betrayed us is already standing beside you.*

Daniel slowly lowered the receiver.

His eyes moved across the room.

Margaret.

Richard.

Celeste.

Three people.

Three possible answers.

Three people who had lied to him.

The worst part was that he no longer knew which lies were meant to protect him and which were meant to destroy him.

Oliver held onto his jacket.

“Daddy?””

Daniel looked down immediately.

The fear in his son’s voice brought him back.

Not the company.

Not the secrets.

Not the Sterling name.

Oliver.

That was the only thing that mattered.

“It’s okay,” Daniel whispered.

But Oliver looked toward Richard.

“Is he bad?””

The question froze everyone.

Richard’s expression changed.

For the first time since appearing alive, he looked almost human.

“I’m not here to hurt you.””

Oliver did not move closer.

Children knew things adults ignored.

They felt danger before they understood it.

Daniel placed a protective hand on his son’s shoulder.

“You don’t go near anyone unless I say.””

Richard studied him.

“Good.””

Daniel looked at him sharply.

“Good?””

“Yes.””

Richard glanced around the room.

“Because for the first time in your life, you’re acting like a father instead of a Sterling.””

The insult should have angered him.

Instead, Daniel felt something worse.

Because part of him knew Richard was right.

For years, Daniel had measured everything by the family standard.

Success.

Power.

Appearance.

Control.

Even Oliver had become part of that.

The heir.

The future.

The symbol.

He hated himself for realizing it too late.

Celeste stepped forward.

“Daniel, you need to understand something.””

He looked at her.

“I’ve had enough people telling me what I need to understand.””

Her expression softened.

“Then listen to what you need to know.””

A pause.

“Evelyn never wanted to expose the Sterling family.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“She wanted to save it.””

Richard nodded.

“She believed the company could survive without the people controlling it.””

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“And you?””

The old woman remained silent.

That silence answered everything.

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“You knew.””

Margaret finally spoke.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Long enough.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Her eyes met his.

“Since before Oliver was born.””

Daniel felt the words like a physical blow.

Before Oliver was born.

Before everything.

Before the wedding.

Before the hospital.

Before he became a father.

“What did you know?””

Margaret walked slowly toward the desk.

“I knew your father had created something dangerous.””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“She always uses softer words.””

Margaret ignored him.

“I knew the company had hidden operations.””

“Hidden operations?””

Daniel’s anger returned.

“You mean illegal ones?””

Margaret did not answer.

Richard did.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at Margaret.

“You knew my father was breaking the law.””

“I knew your father was doing whatever was necessary to protect the family.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s your excuse?””

“No.””

Margaret looked at him.

“That was my mistake.””

The admission surprised him.

Margaret Sterling did not admit mistakes.

Not ever.

“I believed the Sterling name was worth protecting at any cost.””

Her voice became quieter.

“I was wrong.””

Richard looked at her.

“Too late.””

“Yes,” Margaret replied.

“For everyone.””

The words carried more weight than Daniel expected.

Before he could respond, a loud crash echoed from upstairs.

Everyone turned.

Daniel immediately moved toward the stairs.

“Oliver’s room.””

They rushed upward.

The ballroom was still full of guests.

The party continued.

Music played.

People laughed.

They had no idea that the Sterling family was collapsing beneath them.

Daniel ignored everyone.

He ran through the hallway.

When he reached Oliver’s bedroom, the door was open.

The room looked untouched.

Almost.

A drawer had been pulled out.

Books were scattered across the floor.

The window was open.

Cold night air entered the room.

Daniel’s heart stopped.

“Oliver?””

His son stood near the bed.

“I didn’t do it.””

Daniel immediately knelt.

“Do what?””

Oliver pointed toward the window.

“Someone was here.””

Daniel looked outside.

Nothing.

Only darkness.

“Who?””

Oliver hugged his airplane.

“I don’t know.””

Celeste examined the room.

“He was looking for something.””

Daniel turned.

“How do you know?””

“Because whoever came here ignored everything valuable.””

She pointed.

Jewelry.

Money.

Expensive toys.

All untouched.

“They weren’t stealing.””

Richard entered behind them.

“They were searching.””

Daniel looked at him.

“For what?””

Richard’s eyes moved toward Oliver.

The boy’s hand.

The toy airplane.

Daniel followed his gaze.

The repaired wing.

The piece Celeste had fixed earlier.

Richard walked closer.

“Where did you get that?””

Oliver stepped back.

“Mommy gave it to me.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked at him.

“When?””

“Before she left.””

Daniel’s voice softened.

“Oliver, Mommy gave you this two years ago?””

The boy nodded.

“She said I had to keep it safe.””

Celeste immediately understood.

“The airplane.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

“Evelyn hid something inside it.””

Oliver looked confused.

“Inside?””

Daniel picked up the toy carefully.

The wooden airplane seemed ordinary.

Small.

Simple.

A child’s toy.

But Evelyn had always been clever.

He examined the repaired wing.

The tape.

The crack.

The piece Celeste had fixed.

His eyes narrowed.

“Wait.””

He looked at Celeste.

“You repaired this.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Did you open the wing?””

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

Her face changed.

“Yes.””

Daniel turned the airplane over.

Something was different.

The repaired piece was not the original wood.

It was newer.

Someone had already replaced it.

Someone had already opened it.

His phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

Daniel looked at the screen.

*You are finally looking in the right place.*

Another message arrived.

*But you are still too late.*

Then a third.

A photograph.

Daniel opened it.

The image showed Oliver’s bedroom.

Taken moments ago.

From inside.

Daniel’s blood turned cold.

Someone had been watching them.

Another message appeared.

*Ask Celeste why she was really chosen.*

Daniel slowly looked up.

Celeste saw his expression.

“What happened?””

He turned the phone toward her.

She looked at the image.

Her face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Daniel noticed.

“You know who sent this.””

Celeste did not answer.

“Celeste.””

Her voice was quiet.

“I was afraid this would happen.””

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“Afraid of what?””

She looked at Oliver.

Then at Daniel.

“Of him finding out.””

“Who?””

Celeste swallowed.

“The person who hired me.””

The room became silent.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You said you were helping Evelyn.””

“I was.””

“Then who hired you?””

Celeste closed her eyes.

“I wasn’t hired to destroy the Sterlings.””

A pause.

“I was hired to protect one.””

Daniel looked at Oliver.

His chest tightened.

“Protect who?””

Celeste looked toward the window.

Toward the darkness outside.

Then she whispered:

“Your son.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel felt a chill.

“From who?””

Celeste’s answer was barely audible.

“From his own father.””

The words cut deeper than anything else.

Daniel stared at her.

“What?””

Celeste looked at him with sadness.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice became cold.

“No more secrets.””

She reached into her coat and pulled out a small envelope.

Not a weapon.

Not evidence.

A letter.

She handed it to him.

“This is why Evelyn disappeared.””

Daniel took it.

The handwriting on the front made his heart stop.

*For Daniel.*

He opened it.

The first sentence destroyed the last piece of certainty he had.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, then Celeste has finally told you the truth.*

His hands trembled.

The next line was worse.

*I never left because I was afraid of your family.*

Daniel stared.

Then he read the sentence below.

*I left because I discovered you were the one person I could no longer protect Oliver from.*

And for the first time that night, Daniel Sterling had no answer.

Because the person he had spent two years searching for had finally revealed the one truth he never wanted to face.

May you like

Maybe Evelyn had not been running away from him.

Maybe she had been running away from what he had become.
