Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Smile
For three seconds, Daniel could not move.
The hidden room beneath Sterling Manor suddenly felt impossibly small.
The walls that had protected generations of Sterling secrets now felt like they were closing in around him.
Celeste stood at the top of the stairs.
The woman who had spent the evening smiling gently at Oliver.
The woman who had fixed his broken toy airplane.
The woman who had seemed different from the others.
She held a gun in her hand.
Not shaking.
Not hesitating.
Just holding it.
Like she had done this before.
Daniel slowly stepped in front of the desk.
Not because he thought he could fight her.
Because Oliver was upstairs.
And every instinct inside him screamed one thing.
Protect his son.
“Where is Oliver?””
Celeste’s expression changed slightly.
Not fear.
Not guilt.
Something closer to disappointment.
“That’s the first thing you ask?””
Daniel stared at her.
“Where is my son?””
She walked down the stairs slowly.
Her heels clicked against the stone steps.
“You really are exactly what she said you were.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Celeste stopped.
“Evelyn.””
The name hit the room like a weapon.
Daniel felt his anger rise.
“You knew her.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Celeste looked around the hidden office.
“Because I helped her build this.””
Margaret moved forward.
“You.””
Celeste looked at her.
The two women stared at each other.
There was history there.
A history Daniel did not understand.
“You knew she survived,” Margaret said.
Celeste smiled faintly.
“You knew she would come back.””
Daniel looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Neither woman answered.
His frustration exploded.
“I am done being the last person to know what is going on in my own life.””
Celeste looked at him.
For a moment, the cold expression disappeared.
“You want the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Then listen carefully.””
She lowered the gun slightly.
“Two years ago, Evelyn Sterling did not disappear because she wanted to leave you.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“I know that.””
“No, you don’t.””
Celeste stepped closer.
“She left because she found out your father’s company was built on something much worse than corruption.””
Daniel shook his head.
“My father died before—”
“Your father did not work alone.””
The words stopped him.
Celeste looked toward Margaret.
“And neither did your grandmother.””
Margaret’s voice became sharp.
“Be careful.””
Celeste laughed quietly.
“That’s what you always said.””
Daniel watched them.
The way they spoke.
The anger.
The familiarity.
They had known each other for years.
“You worked with Evelyn,” Daniel said.
Celeste looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Who are you?””
A silence followed.
Then she answered.
“My real name is Celeste Laurent.””
Daniel frowned.
“That means nothing.””
“It will.””
She placed the gun on the desk.
A strange gesture.
Not surrender.
Something else.
“I was an investigative attorney before I ever met your family.””
Daniel looked at the flash drive.
“You were investigating Sterling Corporation?””
“Yes.””
“And Evelyn?””
“She found me.””
Celeste’s voice softened.
“She was the first person in your family who actually wanted the truth.””
Daniel looked away.
That hurt more than he expected.
Because he knew it was probably true.
Evelyn had always questioned things.
She had always looked beyond the obvious.
And he had always told her she was too suspicious.
Too emotional.
Too dramatic.
He had chosen his family over her.
Every time.
“What happened the night she disappeared?”” Daniel asked.
Celeste’s expression darkened.
“That night was supposed to be the end.””
“Of what?””
“Of everyone who knew too much.””
The room went silent.
Margaret looked toward the door.
“Where is Evelyn now?””
Celeste ignored her.
Daniel noticed.
“Answer her.””
Celeste looked at him.
“She’s alive.””
“I know that.””
“No.””
Celeste’s voice lowered.
“You know she survived. That is different.””
Daniel felt cold.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Evelyn is not hiding from you.””
She paused.
“She is hiding from the people who tried to erase her.””
Daniel looked at the necklace inside the box.
“What is on the flash drive?””
Celeste looked at it.
“Everything.””
“Everything?””
“Financial records. Names. Dates.
Payments. Conversations.””
Daniel stared.
“Why leave it here?””
“Because she knew one day you would have to choose.””
“Choose what?””
Celeste’s eyes met his.
“Your family name.””
A pause.
“Or your family.””
The words stayed in the air.
Daniel looked upstairs.
At Oliver.
The little boy who had spent his life carrying a burden he never understood.
A child born into a war he never started.
A child who had been treated like an heir before he was allowed to be a son.
“Where is Evelyn?””
Celeste looked at him.
“Do you really want to know?””
“Yes.””
“Even if the answer changes everything?””
Daniel did not hesitate.
“Yes.””
Before Celeste could respond, Margaret suddenly moved.
Fast.
Much faster than Daniel expected.
She grabbed the flash drive from the desk.
Celeste immediately raised the gun.
“Don’t.””
Margaret held the drive tightly.
“You have no idea what this will do.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What are you doing?””
Margaret’s eyes stayed on Celeste.
“Saving this family.””
“No.””
Daniel stepped toward her.
“You’re protecting yourself.””
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“You think Evelyn told you the truth?””
“Yes.””
“You think she was innocent?””
Daniel stopped.
Margaret continued.
“You never asked why she was investigating the company.””
“Because she found something wrong.””
“No.””
Margaret’s voice became colder.
“Because she was looking for something.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Margaret looked at Celeste.
Then back at him.
“The reason your son was born.””
Daniel felt his stomach drop.
“What?””
Celeste’s expression changed.
For the first time, she looked shocked.
“Margaret.””
But the older woman continued.
“You believe Oliver is simply your child.””
Daniel’s voice became dangerous.
“He is my son.””
“I didn’t say he wasn’t.””
The room went silent.
Margaret whispered:
“But Evelyn discovered something about Oliver’s birth.””
Daniel looked at Celeste.
Then Margaret.
“What are you talking about?””
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was something neither woman wanted to say.
Daniel’s hands curled into fists.
“What did Evelyn discover?””
Margaret looked at him.
Then at the flash drive.
Then at the hidden room.
Finally, she said:
“The truth about who Oliver’s biological father really is.””
Daniel felt like the world stopped.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Impossible.
It had to be impossible.
Oliver was his son.
He had held him the night he was born.
He had watched him take his first steps.
He had kissed his forehead every night.
“No.””
Celeste looked at Margaret with anger.
“You had no right.””
Margaret ignored her.
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“Tell me she’s lying.””
Celeste said nothing.
That silence was worse.
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew?””
Celeste looked away.
“I knew there were questions.””
“Questions?””
His voice echoed.
“My entire life is falling apart, and you’re talking about questions?””
A sound suddenly came from upstairs.
A small voice.
“Daddy?””
Daniel froze.
Oliver.
Everyone looked toward the staircase.
Oliver stood at the top.
Holding his toy airplane.
His eyes moved between the adults.
Then toward Celeste’s gun.
“Why are you fighting?””
Daniel immediately moved.
“Oliver, go back to your room.””
But Oliver did not move.
He looked at Margaret.
Then Celeste.
Then Daniel.
And quietly said:
“Mommy told me not to trust Grandma.””
Nobody breathed.
Daniel slowly turned toward Margaret.
Because there was one thing he finally understood.
The secret beneath Sterling Manor was not just about money.
It was not just about Evelyn.
It was not even about the company.
It was about Oliver.
And every person in the room had been lying to him.
Then Oliver reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“Mommy said I should give this to Daddy when everyone was together.””
Daniel stared.
The handwriting on the paper was familiar.
Evelyn’s.
He opened it.
Only one sentence was written inside.
*Daniel, if Oliver gave you this letter, it means I was wrong about one thing.*
His heart raced.
The next words made him stop.
*I thought you were the person who betrayed me.*
Daniel looked down.
*I was wrong. The person who betrayed us was standing beside you the entire time.*
May you like
A cold silence filled the hidden room.
And slowly, everyone’s eyes turned toward the same person.
