Chapter 6: The Name Written in Blood
Daniel read Evelyn’s letter again.
Then again.
The words refused to make sense.
*The person who betrayed us was standing beside you the entire time.*
Everyone was looking at everyone else.
Celeste.
Margaret.
Daniel.
No one spoke.
The hidden room beneath Sterling Manor had become a courtroom, and every person inside was both a witness and a suspect.
Oliver stood at the top of the stairs, still holding his toy airplane.
Too young to understand.
Too innocent to know that the adults around him had spent years turning his life into a battlefield.
Daniel folded the letter slowly.
“Oliver.””
The boy looked at him.
“Come here.””
Oliver walked down the stairs.
Every step felt painfully slow.
Daniel crouched and pulled him close.
“It’s okay.””
But even as he said the words, he knew they were a lie.
Nothing was okay.
Not anymore.
Celeste watched them quietly.
Margaret looked away.
Daniel noticed.
That bothered him.
Because Margaret Sterling never looked away from anything.
“Tell me the truth,” Daniel said.
His voice was calm now.
Too calm.
“Who betrayed Evelyn?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel looked at Margaret.
“You.””
Her eyes met his.
For a moment, he expected anger.
Instead, he saw exhaustion.
“You think I am the villain because it is easier.””
Daniel stood.
“No.””
He pointed toward the letter.
“I think you are the villain because my wife wrote your name without writing it.””
Margaret’s jaw tightened.
“She didn’t know everything.””
“Neither do I.””
“That is exactly why you should stop.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“Stop?””
He looked around the hidden room.
“At what point did you all decide my life was something you could control?””
Margaret said nothing.
Daniel turned to Celeste.
“You knew Evelyn.””
“Yes.””
“You helped her hide.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about Oliver’s birth.””
A pause.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
More than he expected.
Daniel stared at her.
“And you still stood in front of my son tonight pretending to be someone who wanted to be his mother.””
Celeste lowered her eyes.
“I never pretended to care about him.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
“No.””
Her voice became softer.
“It isn’t.””
Daniel looked at the gun.
“Why bring that?””
Celeste looked at it.
“Because I knew someone else would come.””
The room went silent.
Someone else.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Before Celeste could answer, the lights above them flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then everything went dark.
Oliver gasped.
Daniel immediately grabbed him.
“Stay behind me.””
A sound echoed from the staircase.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Confident.
Someone was entering the hidden room.
Margaret whispered:
“No.””
Daniel heard something he had never heard from her before.
Fear.
The emergency lights turned on.
A figure stood at the entrance.
A man.
Older.
Wearing a black suit.
His hair was gray.
His face was familiar.
Impossible.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Because he knew that face.
Everyone in the Sterling family knew that face.
“Richard?””
The man smiled.
“Hello, little brother.””
Daniel could not move.
Richard Sterling.
His older brother.
The man everyone believed had died eighteen months ago.
The man whose funeral Daniel attended.
The man whose ashes sat in the family cemetery.
Standing alive in front of him.
Oliver tightened his grip on Daniel’s hand.
“Daddy?””
Daniel could not answer.
His mind was racing.
This was impossible.
“You’re dead.””
Richard smiled.
“So I was told.””
Margaret stepped forward.
“Richard, you should not be here.””
His eyes moved toward her.
“Still giving orders after all these years?””
Daniel looked between them.
“You knew?””
Richard laughed.
“Of course she knew.””
Daniel felt sick.
His family.
Every person he trusted.
Every memory.
Everything was collapsing.
“Why?”” Daniel asked.
Richard looked at him.
“Because I needed you to finally see the truth.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You sent the messages?””
“Yes.””
“You sent the photograph of Evelyn?””
“Yes.””
“You knew she was alive?””
Richard smiled.
“She was never dead.””
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“Where is she?””
Richard looked toward Oliver.
“Closer than you think.””
The words made Daniel’s stomach tighten.
“What does that mean?””
Richard walked into the room.
He looked at Oliver carefully.
Not with affection.
Not like family.
Like he was studying something valuable.
Daniel immediately moved Oliver behind him.
Richard noticed.
“That’s interesting.””
“What?””
“You finally chose your son over the Sterling name.””
Daniel frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard looked at Margaret.
“She never told you, did she?””
Daniel’s anger returned.
“Told me what?””
Richard smiled.
“The truth about Oliver.””
Daniel’s hand tightened around the letter.
“I already heard enough.””
“No.””
Richard shook his head.
“You heard a piece of the truth.””
He looked at Celeste.
“You should have told him.””
Celeste’s face hardened.
“You don’t get to pretend you care about honesty.””
Richard ignored her.
“Daniel, do you remember the night Oliver was born?””
Daniel stared.
“What kind of question is that?””
“Answer it.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Of course he remembered.
The hospital.
Evelyn crying.
Holding their baby.
The happiest night of his life.
“He was my son.””
Richard nodded slowly.
“That’s what you believed.””
Daniel’s eyes became dangerous.
“Choose your next words carefully.””
Richard stepped closer.
“Evelyn discovered that the hospital records had been changed.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“The DNA results.””
Silence.
Daniel felt his heart pounding.
“No.””
Richard continued.
“She found out before Oliver turned one.””
Daniel looked at Celeste.
“Is this true?””
Celeste did not answer immediately.
That was enough.
Daniel’s face changed.
“Is this true?””
Finally, she whispered:
“Yes.””
The word destroyed something inside him.
Daniel looked down at Oliver.
His son.
His little boy.
The child who called him Daddy.
The child he loved more than anything.
Oliver looked up at him.
“Daddy?””
Daniel immediately pulled him close.
“No matter what.””
His voice broke slightly.
“No matter what anyone says, you are my son.””
Richard watched quietly.
“That’s the difference between you and the rest of us.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
“You actually love something more than the family name.””
Daniel stared.
“Then why are you doing this?””
Richard’s expression darkened.
“Because someone has to end this.””
“End what?””
“The Sterling lie.””
Richard pointed toward the flash drive.
“That contains evidence of what our father built. What Margaret protected. What I tried to expose.””
Daniel looked at Margaret.
“And what did you do?””
The older woman said nothing.
Richard answered for her.
“She made a deal.””
Daniel’s stomach dropped.
“With who?””
Richard looked toward the door.
“The person who actually controls Sterling.””
A sound came from the hallway.
A phone ringing.
Everyone froze.
It was coming from the desk.
The hidden desk.
Daniel slowly walked toward it.
A small old-fashioned phone sat beneath the papers.
It had not been there before.
Or maybe he simply had not noticed.
The phone kept ringing.
Margaret whispered:
“Don’t answer.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
For the first time, Margaret looked terrified.
“Because that person has been waiting for you to pick up.””
The phone rang again.
Daniel reached for it.
Everyone watched.
He lifted the receiver.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice answered.
Soft.
Familiar.
A voice he had not heard in two years.
A voice he had dreamed about every night.
“Daniel.””
His knees almost gave out.
Because he knew that voice.
Everyone in the room knew that voice.
Oliver heard it too.
And the little boy whispered:
“Mommy?””
Daniel gripped the phone.
“Evelyn?””
A long silence.
Then she spoke.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“She’s alive.””
Evelyn’s voice trembled.
“Yes.””
“Where are you?””
Another silence.
Then:
“Daniel, I’m not the person you need to find.””
His brow furrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Her voice became urgent.
“Because the person who tried to destroy me is not in Sterling Manor.””
Daniel looked around the room.
Everyone stared back.
Then Evelyn said the words that made his blood run cold.
“The person who betrayed us is already standing beside you.””
The call suddenly ended.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
And every person in the hidden room looked at each other.
Because now they knew one thing.
May you like
Evelyn was still afraid.
And whatever was coming next was bigger than any secret they had uncovered.
