Chapter 8: The Truth Beneath the Truth
Marcus didn’t answer the phone immediately.
He just stood there.
Frozen.
The entire kitchen watched him.
Andre had spent his whole life seeing his father as a man who always knew what to do. Marcus Robinson was the person who fixed broken things. The person who made decisions. The person who never admitted fear.
But now?
Now his hand was shaking.
“*Marcus?*” Rachel’s voice came through the speaker.
Andre stepped closer.
“*Let me talk to her.*”
Marcus looked at him.
For a second, Andre thought his father would refuse.
Instead, Marcus slowly handed him the phone.
Andre pressed it to his ear.
“*Hello?*”
Silence.
Then a shaky breath.
“*Andre?*”
The sound of his name from her voice felt strange.
Not wrong.
Just unfamiliar.
Like hearing someone sing a song he had never heard but somehow recognized.
“*Yes.*”
Rachel started crying.
Quietly.
Like she was trying not to let him hear.
“*You sound like him.*”
Andre frowned.
“*Like who?*”
A pause.
“*Your father.*”
Andre looked at Marcus.
The man who raised him stood a few feet away.
The man who wasn’t his biological father.
But was still his father.
“*Which one?*”
The question slipped out before he could stop it.
Rachel went silent.
And somehow, that silence carried years of pain.
“*Andre… I know you’re angry.*”
“*You don’t know anything about what I feel.*”
The words came out harder than he expected.
But he didn’t take them back.
“*You left.*”
Rachel’s breathing changed.
“*Yes.*”
“*You knew where I was.*”
“*Yes.*”
“*You knew I existed.*”
“*Yes.*”
Andre looked away.
“*Then why wasn’t I enough?*”
The question broke him more than he expected.
Because beneath all the anger was something simpler.
A child asking why someone didn’t choose him.
On the other end of the phone, Rachel cried.
“*You were always enough.*”
Andre closed his eyes.
“*Then why?*”
Her voice trembled.
“*Because loving you was the easiest thing I ever did. Losing you was the hardest. But keeping you would have destroyed another child who needed me.*”
Andre looked at the photograph of Ethan sitting on the table.
His brother.
A stranger.
A person who carried the same beginning but a completely different life.
“*Everyone keeps saying they protected me.*”
Rachel whispered:
“*I know.*”
“*Do you understand how that feels? Everyone decided what was best for me. Nobody asked me.*”
There was a long pause.
Then Rachel said something he didn’t expect.
“*You’re right.*”
Andre opened his eyes.
“*What?*”
“*You’re right to be angry.*”
That surprised him.
No excuses.
No defense.
Just acceptance.
“*I made a choice for you before you had a voice. Marcus made choices for you. Linda made choices for you. Robert made choices for everyone.*”
Her voice cracked.
“*And every choice came from fear.*”
Andre leaned against the counter.
“*Tell me about Robert.*”
The change in Rachel’s breathing was immediate.
Fear.
Real fear.
“*You need to understand something about my father.*”
Andre listened.
“**Robert Hale was brilliant. People respected him. He was a gifted doctor.
But he believed he could control everything. Even things that didn’t belong to him.**”
“*Like babies?*”
Rachel went quiet.
“*Like lives.*”
Andre looked at Marcus.
His father lowered his eyes.
“*What did he do?*”
Rachel answered softly.
“*Robert was the one who discovered the hospital mistake.*”
“*And he covered it up.*”
“*Yes.*”
“*Why?*”
Another silence.
Then:
“*Because he made a decision about Ethan before Ethan was even born.*”
Andre frowned.
“*What does that mean?*”
Rachel took a shaky breath.
“*Robert believed Ethan had a better chance with a wealthy family than with us.*”
Andre looked confused.
“*So he arranged the adoption?*”
“*Not exactly.*”
“*Then what?*”
Rachel’s voice dropped.
“**He manipulated everything. The records. The paperwork.
The timing. He made sure Ethan ended up where he wanted.**”
Andre felt anger rising again.
“*And nobody stopped him?*”
“*Your father tried.*”
Andre looked at Marcus.
Marcus looked away.
Rachel continued.
“*Marcus found out later. He confronted Robert.*”
“*And?*”
“*Robert threatened him.*”
Andre’s face tightened.
“*With what?*”
Rachel hesitated.
“*With taking you away too.*”
The room went silent.
Andre slowly turned toward Marcus.
His father’s face was pale.
“*Is that true?*”
Marcus nodded.
“*Yes.*”
Andre stared.
“*You never told me.*”
“*Because I wanted you to have a normal life.*”
“*A normal life built on lies.*”
Marcus looked down.
“*I know.*”
Andre looked back at the phone.
“*Where is Robert now?*”
Rachel didn’t answer.
That worried him.
“*Mom?*”
The word escaped before he could think.
Rachel went completely silent.
Andre realized what he had said.
He had never called her that.
Not once.
On the phone, Rachel started crying.
“*I’m sorry.*”
Andre swallowed.
“*Where is he?*”
“*He’s been looking for you.*”
A chill moved through him.
“*Why?*”
Rachel’s voice became urgent.
“*Because he knows the truth is coming out.*”
“*What truth?*”
Before Rachel could answer, there was a loud knock at the front door.
Everyone froze.
Marcus looked toward the hallway.
Linda’s face turned white.
Andre lowered the phone.
“*Who is that?*”
Nobody responded.
The knock came again.
Harder.
Then a voice from outside.
An older man.
Calm.
Confident.
“*Marcus. I know you’re in there.*”
Andre felt every person in the room tense.
Rachel whispered through the phone:
“*Andre… listen to me.*”
He pressed it back to his ear.
“*What?*”
Her voice shook.
“*Do not let him inside.*”
The voice outside continued.
“*I only want to talk.*”
Marcus moved toward the door.
Andre grabbed his arm.
“*Don’t.*”
His father looked at him.
For the first time, Andre saw something he had never seen before.
Fear.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Fear.
“*Andre, you don’t understand.*”
“*Then explain.*”
Marcus looked toward the door.
“*That’s Robert.*”
The name alone changed the air in the house.
The man who had created the secret.
The man who had controlled their lives.
The man who had been hiding in the background for twenty-two years.
Was standing outside.
The knocking stopped.
Then came one final sentence.
“*Andre, I know you’re in there.*”
Andre froze.
His blood ran cold.
Because Robert Hale knew his name.
The door handle moved.
Slowly.
May you like
“*And I know exactly who your real father is.*”
The door unlocked.
