Chapter 7: The Mother Who Let Me Go

Andre stared at the envelope on the kitchen table.

He had stopped being surprised.

That was the terrifying part.

A week ago, an envelope like this would have meant nothing.

A piece of mail.

A forgotten document.

Something ordinary.

Now it felt like every envelope in the world carried the power to destroy his life.

He looked at Marcus.

Then at Linda.

Then back at the envelope.

“*My biological mother knew?*”

Nobody answered immediately.

Andre’s patience disappeared.

“*I asked a question.*”

Marcus nodded slowly.

“*Yes.*”

Andre looked at Linda.

His voice softened, but only slightly.

“*Did you know her?*”

Linda’s eyes filled with tears.

“*Yes.*”

The answer hurt more than he expected.

Because every new truth created another question.

“*Who was she?*”

Linda sat down.

Her hands trembled as she touched the envelope.

“*Her name was Rachel Hale.*”

Andre froze.

“*Hale?*”

Marcus nodded.

“*Robert Hale’s daughter.*”

The room went silent.

Andre slowly processed the words.

“*The doctor who delivered me… was her father?*”

Linda nodded.

“*Yes.*”

“*And she was my mother?*”

Another nod.

Andre stepped back.

He felt like he was standing in the middle of a storm, trying to understand which direction the wind was coming from.

“*Why didn’t anyone tell me this?*”

Linda looked down.

“*Because Rachel made a choice.*”

Andre’s expression hardened.

“*What choice?*”

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Marcus answered.

“*She chose to leave.*”

The words were simple.

But they carried years of pain.

Andre stared at him.

“*She abandoned me?*”

Linda immediately shook her head.

“*No.*”

“*Then explain it.*”

His mother looked at the envelope.

“*Rachel didn’t know about the mistake at first. When Robert discovered what happened, he told her.*”

Andre frowned.

“*And then?*”

“*Then she came to see me.*”

The image formed in Andre’s mind.

Two women.

Both connected to him.

Both knowing something he didn’t.

“*Why would she come to you?*”

Linda looked away.

“*Because she was afraid.*”

“*Afraid of what?*”

Her voice became quiet.

“*Of losing you.*”

Andre shook his head.

“*But she did lose me.*”

Linda closed her eyes.

“*Yes.*”

A painful silence followed.

Marcus sat down across from Andre.

For the first time, he looked less like the father who controlled every situation.

And more like a man carrying a regret he couldn’t escape.

“*You need to understand something about that night.*”

Andre looked at him.

“*I’m listening.*”

Marcus took a breath.

“*When we found out about the mistake, everything changed.*”

“*For everyone except me.*”

Marcus accepted that.

“*Yes.*”

“*Go on.*”

Marcus looked at the table.

“*Rachel wanted to take you. She wanted to raise you herself.*”

Andre’s heart tightened.

“*Then why didn’t she?*”

Linda answered.

“*Because Ethan was still in the hospital.*”

Andre looked at her.

“*What does Ethan have to do with this?*”

“*Everything.*”

Linda wiped her eyes.

“*Rachel had just lost the child she gave birth to. The baby she thought was hers was gone. Then she discovered another child existed. You.*”

Andre looked down.

“*So she had a choice.*”

“*Yes.*”

“*Me or Ethan.*”

Nobody denied it.

Andre felt something heavy settle in his chest.

“*And she chose him.*”

Linda nodded.

“*She chose the child who needed her more at that moment.*”

Andre looked away.

Part of him understood.

But another part—the child inside him who had wondered his whole life why he was never special enough—felt something else.

A quiet kind of grief.

“*Did she ever try to find me?*”

Linda looked at Marcus.

Marcus answered.

“*Yes.*”

Andre turned.

“*What?*”

“*Several times.*”

“*And?*”

Marcus looked down.

“*I stopped her.*”

The confession hit harder than anything before.

Andre stared at him.

“*You stopped my mother from seeing me?*”

Marcus’s eyes closed.

“*Yes.*”

“*Why?*”

“*Because I was afraid.*”

Andre laughed bitterly.

“*Everyone was afraid. Everyone made choices because they were afraid. Do you realize I’m the only person who never got to choose anything?*”

Marcus had no answer.

Andre stood.

“*Where is Rachel now?*”

Linda hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“*Mom.*”

She whispered:

“*She’s alive.*”

Andre’s heart started beating faster.

“*Where?*”

“*I don’t know.*”

“*You don’t know?*”

“*Not anymore.*”

Andre looked between them.

“*What does that mean?*”

Marcus reached into the envelope.

He pulled out a letter.

“*Rachel wrote this before she left.*”

Andre stared at it.

“*To who?*”

Marcus handed it to him.

“*To you.*”

Andre didn’t take it immediately.

A letter.

From his biological mother.

A woman who had known him before he knew himself.

Finally, he grabbed it.

The handwriting was delicate.

The first line made his throat tighten.

My son,

Andre stopped.

No one had ever called him that except Linda.

He kept reading.

If you ever read this, it means the people who loved you finally found the courage to tell you the truth.

His hands shook.

I need you to know something. I did not leave because I didn’t love you.

Andre swallowed.

I left because I believed staying would destroy two children instead of saving one.

He looked up.

Nobody spoke.

He continued.

*Your brother Ethan needed me. But you needed something too. You needed a home.

A family. A father who would love you.*

Andre looked at Marcus.

The man who raised him.

The man who lied to him.

The man who loved him.

Both things were true.

And that made everything harder.

He kept reading.

I asked Marcus to raise you because I saw the way he looked at you. I knew he loved you. I knew he would protect you.

Andre stopped.

A strange feeling moved through him.

Because his anger wanted Marcus to be a villain.

But the truth refused to be simple.

Then he reached the final paragraph.

There is one thing nobody will tell you. One reason I disappeared completely.

Andre leaned closer.

Because the person responsible for the mistake at the hospital was never punished.

His eyes widened.

He looked at Marcus.

Then Linda.

“*What does this mean?*”

Nobody answered.

Andre read the last sentence.

And every piece of the story shifted again.

Robert Hale didn’t switch the records by accident.

Andre lowered the letter.

“*He did it on purpose?*”

Marcus looked away.

“*Yes.*”

Andre felt cold.

“*Why?*”

Linda whispered:

“*Because Robert knew something about your birth that nobody else knew.*”

“*What?*”

She looked terrified.

“*He knew there was a reason you and Ethan were never supposed to be separated.*”

Andre stared.

“*What reason?*”

Before anyone could answer, Marcus’s phone began ringing.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

Andre noticed immediately.

“*Who is it?*”

Marcus didn’t respond.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, Andre stepped closer.

“*Dad. Who is calling?*”

Marcus slowly turned the screen toward him.

The name displayed there made Andre’s breath stop.

*Rachel Hale.*

His biological mother.

After twenty-two years of silence.

She was calling now.

Marcus answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then a woman’s voice came through.

A voice filled with fear.

“*Marcus… he found out, didn’t he?*”

Marcus looked at Andre.

Rachel continued:

“*Andre knows the truth.*”

A pause.

May you like

Then her voice dropped.

“*You need to get him away from Robert before it’s too late.*”
