Chapter 6: The Third Name
Andre stared at the DNA report until the letters stopped looking like words.
He read the same line again.
Then again.
As if somehow the answer would change if he looked long enough.
It didn’t.
The name remained there.
A name he had never heard before.
A name that belonged to a man who wasn’t Marcus Robinson.
Wasn’t Daniel.
Wasn’t anyone he recognized.
Andre slowly lifted his eyes.
“*Who is Robert Hale?*”
Ethan didn’t respond immediately.
That bothered Andre more than anything.
Everyone had been doing that.
Pausing.
Looking away.
Deciding how much truth he could handle.
He was tired of being treated like a child.
“*Who is Robert Hale?*” Andre repeated.
Ethan leaned back.
“*Someone your mother knew before you were born.*”
Andre’s chest tightened.
“*Another secret?*”
Ethan nodded.
“*Yes.*”
Andre looked down at the DNA report.
His hands felt numb.
“*So let me understand this.*”
His voice became sharper.
“*My whole life, I thought Marcus Robinson was my father. Then I find out about you. Then I find out Daniel exists. Now you’re telling me there’s another man?*”
Ethan didn’t argue.
“*I know how it sounds.*”
Andre laughed quietly.
“*No, you don’t.*”
He folded the paper.
“*You have no idea what it feels like to find out your entire identity was built on things people hid from you.*”
Ethan looked down.
“*Actually, I do.*”
That stopped Andre.
For the first time, he remembered.
Ethan had lived with secrets too.
Maybe different ones.
But secrets.
“*Tell me everything.*”
Ethan looked toward the window.
Cars moved through the city streets outside.
People walking.
People living normal lives.
While Andre’s life had turned upside down in less than twenty-four hours.
“*When I found my birth records, I didn’t just find out about you.*”
Ethan tapped the DNA report.
“*I found out something was wrong.*”
“*What do you mean?*”
“*The records didn’t match.*”
Andre frowned.
“*Match what?*”
“*The hospital records said one thing. The adoption records said another.*”
Andre listened carefully.
“*Someone changed information.*”
A cold feeling moved through him.
“*Who?*”
Ethan shook his head.
“*I don’t know. But I found clues.*”
“*And those clues led to Robert Hale?*”
“*Yes.*”
Andre stared at the name.
“*Who was he?*”
Ethan hesitated.
“*A doctor.*”
The answer made Andre’s stomach drop.
“*A doctor?*”
“*The doctor who delivered you and me.*”
Andre looked away.
The pieces were beginning to form.
But none of them made sense.
“*Why would my mother have a DNA connection to him?*”
Ethan’s expression changed.
“*That’s the question I’ve been trying to answer.*”
Andre stood.
“*No.*”
Ethan looked up.
“*No?*”
“*I’m not doing this anymore.*”
He grabbed the papers.
“I’m not sitting here while another person explains my life to me like I’m reading someone else’s story.””
Ethan watched him.
“*Then ask your mother.*”
Andre stopped.
“*What?*”
“*Ask Linda.*”
“*You think she’ll tell me?*”
Ethan’s face was serious.
“*I think she has been waiting for someone to force her to.*”
Andre drove straight to his parents’ house.
He didn’t call.
He didn’t warn them.
He needed answers before anyone had time to prepare another speech.
When he opened the front door, the house was quiet.
Too quiet.
“*Mom?*”
No response.
He walked through the living room.
The family pictures on the wall suddenly looked different.
Every smile.
Every memory.
Every moment.
Now had questions attached.
He found Linda sitting at the kitchen table.
The same place where everything had started.
She looked up.
And immediately knew.
“You met him.””
Andre didn’t sit down.
“*You knew.*”
His mother’s face changed.
“*Knew what?*”
He placed the DNA report on the table.
Linda looked at it.
And all the color left her face.
“*Where did you get this?*”
Andre stared.
“*That’s your first question?*”
“*Andre—*”
“*No. Answer me.*”
His mother touched the paper but didn’t pick it up.
“*You met Ethan.*”
“*Yes.*”
“*And he showed you this?*”
Andre’s eyes narrowed.
“*So you know what it is.*”
Linda closed her eyes.
A painful silence filled the room.
Then she whispered:
“*Yes.*”
Andre stepped back.
Even though he expected it, hearing it hurt.
“*How long?*”
“*How long what?*”
“*How long have you known I wasn’t Marcus’s son?*”
Linda looked like the question physically wounded her.
“*Andre…*”
“*How long?*”
She looked down.
“*Since before you were born.*”
The words landed like a punch.
Andre stared at her.
“*So everyone knew except me.*”
“*Not everyone.*”
“*Who didn’t know?*”
Linda’s voice became small.
“*Marcus.*”
Andre froze.
“*What?*”
She looked at him.
“*Your father didn’t know at first.*”
“*At first?*”
She nodded.
“*I found out after you were born.*”
Andre tried to understand.
“*You found out Marcus wasn’t my biological father… after I was born?*”
“*Yes.*”
“*How?*”
Linda looked toward the window.
“*Because Robert contacted me.*”
Andre felt his stomach drop.
“*The doctor?*”
She nodded.
“*He told me there had been a mistake.*”
Andre stared.
“*A mistake?*”
Linda’s eyes filled.
“*The hospital records were mixed up.*”
“*Mixed up?*”
“*Two babies. Two families. A mistake that should never have happened.*”
Andre sat down slowly.
The anger was still there.
But confusion was taking over.
“*Are you telling me I was switched?*”
Linda nodded.
“*Yes.*”
The word barely came out.
Andre covered his face.
His entire life was becoming something impossible.
“*Then who am I?*”
His mother reached for him.
He moved away.
“*Don’t.*”
She stopped.
“*I’m sorry.*”
Andre looked at her.
“*Sorry doesn’t fix twenty-two years.*”
A tear fell from her eye.
“*I know.*”
“*Where are my biological parents?*”
Linda went completely still.
That reaction told him everything.
“*Mom.*”
She looked down.
“*Robert said he would help us fix everything.*”
“*But you didn’t.*”
“*No.*”
“*Why?*”
Her voice broke.
“*Because by then, you were already my son.*”
Andre felt a strange pain.
Because part of him understood.
And that made it worse.
“*So you chose me.*”
Linda nodded.
“*Yes.*”
“*But you stole my choice.*”
She closed her eyes.
The truth hurt because it was true.
Before she could answer, the front door opened.
Andre turned.
Marcus walked inside.
This time, he looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just tired.
He looked at Andre.
“*You know now.*”
Andre stood.
“*Did you know?*”
Marcus didn’t pretend.
“*Yes.*”
“*When?*”
Marcus took a breath.
“*The day Linda told me.*”
Andre shook his head.
“*And you stayed.*”
“*Yes.*”
“*Why?*”
Marcus looked toward the hallway.
Then back at him.
“*Because by then, you were already my son.*”
Andre’s eyes burned.
“*But I wasn’t yours.*”
Marcus stepped closer.
“*Biology doesn’t decide who raises a child.*”
Andre looked away.
Because he knew that was true.
But it didn’t erase the betrayal.
Then Marcus said something that made Andre look back.
“*There’s one thing Ethan doesn’t know.*”
Andre frowned.
“*What?*”
Marcus reached into his coat pocket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Andre recognized it immediately.
The same hospital logo.
The same date.
The day he was born.
“*Robert Hale wasn’t the only person who knew about the switch.*”
Marcus placed the envelope on the table.
“*Someone else helped cover it up.*”
Andre stared.
“*Who?*”
Marcus looked at Linda.
And Linda looked terrified.
“*Your biological mother.*”
Andre went silent.
Because for the first time, he realized something.
Everyone had been searching for answers.
May you like
But someone had been hiding them on purpose.
And that person was still out there.
