Chapter 9: The Choice I Never Expected
Nobody spoke.
Not because there was nothing to say.
Because everyone was waiting.
Waiting for Ricardo.
Waiting for Adrian.
Waiting for me.
The entire room felt like it was balanced on the edge of a blade.
Adrian stood near the entrance.
No weapon in his hand.
No anger on his face.
That somehow made him more dangerous.
Because people who wanted to hurt you usually looked like they wanted to hurt you.
Adrian looked like he wanted forgiveness.
And that was harder to understand.
“Ask him,” Adrian said.
My eyes stayed on Rico.
“Ask him why Elena left.””
Rico’s expression remained unreadable.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Adrian laughed quietly.
“Of course.””
He looked at me.
“He always says that.””
I swallowed.
“Ricardo.””
He looked at me.
And I saw it.
Fear.
Not fear of Adrian.
Fear of losing me.
“Did my mother leave you?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
Adrian smiled slightly.
“There it is.””
Rico ignored him.
“She left because she was scared.””
“Of you?””
The question came out before I could stop it.
His face changed.
A small crack.
But he answered.
“No.””
“Then who?””
“Everyone.””
The room went quiet.
Rico continued.
“Your mother knew the world I lived in. She knew what happened to people close to me.””
He looked at Leo.
“She didn’t want that for you.””
I looked at Adrian.
“And you?””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“I wanted to protect her.””
I almost laughed.
“By disappearing?””
His eyes lowered.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
The anger finally came.
“You left my mother. You left me.””
His face tightened.
“I thought leaving would keep you alive.””
“Everyone says that.””
My voice shook.
“Everyone leaves and calls it protection.””
That hit him.
Good.
Because I needed him to understand.
“I looked for you.””
The words stopped me.
Adrian looked at me.
“I looked for you for years.””
I stared.
“Then why didn’t you find me?””
His expression broke.
“Because Ricardo hid you.””
I looked at Rico.
Another secret.
Another missing piece.
“Did you?””
Rico didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I stepped back.
“I don’t know who to believe anymore.””
For the first time, nobody argued.
Because they knew.
They had created this.
They had built a world where I couldn’t trust anyone.
A small voice interrupted.
“Clara?””
Leo.
He was standing behind Rico.
His eyes were wide.
He didn’t understand the details.
But he understood fear.
I walked toward him.
Immediately, both men reacted.
Rico moved.
Adrian moved.
I stopped.
“Don’t.””
They froze.
I looked at both of them.
“You both keep deciding what happens to me.””
My voice became stronger.
“My whole life.””
I held Leo’s hand.
“I’m done being something people protect.””
Nobody spoke.
“I’m a person.””
The silence afterward felt different.
Not empty.
Respectful.
Because for once, everyone was listening.
Maria stepped forward.
“Clara is right.””
Everyone looked at her.
She reached into her bag.
And pulled out a small drive.
“I kept this for twelve years.””
Rico stared.
“What is it?””
“The evidence Elena collected.””
Adrian’s face changed.
“No.””
Maria looked at him.
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“What’s on it?””
Maria looked at me.
“Everything.””
She handed it to Rico.
But before he could take it, Adrian stepped forward.
“No one understands what happens if that becomes public.””
Rico’s eyes narrowed.
“Is that a threat?””
“No.””
Adrian looked at me.
“It’s a warning.””
He looked exhausted.
Not evil.
Not innocent.
Just broken.
“Clara, your mother died because she believed exposing the truth would save people.””
He swallowed.
“But she was wrong.””
I stared.
“What do you mean?””
His eyes moved toward the drive.
“Because the people behind it are still alive.””
A cold feeling moved through the room.
Rico looked at Dante.
“Get the files open.””
Dante nodded.
Adrian suddenly looked toward the windows.
His expression changed.
“Too late.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
Then we heard it.
Cars.
Multiple cars.
Stopping outside.
Not Adrian’s men.
More.
Many more.
Rico looked toward the entrance.
His face hardened.
“Who are they?””
Adrian answered quietly.
“The people who killed Elena.””
The mansion fell silent.
Then the front doors exploded inward.
Guards rushed in.
Dante pulled Leo back.
Rico grabbed my hand.
And for the first time, Adrian moved beside him instead of against him.
Two enemies.
Standing together.
Protecting me.
A man I had feared.
A man I had hated.
Both fighting for the same reason.
Me.
Then a woman’s voice echoed from the doorway.
“After twelve years, Elena’s daughter finally comes home.””
Everyone froze.
Because Rico recognized the voice.
Adrian recognized the voice.
Maria started crying.
And I knew immediately.
This person was the reason my mother died.
The woman stepped into the light.
And she smiled.
“Hello, Clara.””
She looked exactly like the woman from my childhood photographs.
Because I had seen her before.
She was standing beside my mother.
The night I was born.
May you like
And the woman who had just walked into the mansion…
Was my mother’s sister.
