Chapter 6: The Truth Beneath the Name
I didn’t sleep.
Not even for a minute.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the photograph.
My mother.
My father.
Me.
A family that existed before I knew it existed.
A family built on secrets.
By sunrise, I was standing in Ricardo Moretti’s office with the photograph in my hand.
He looked up the second I entered.
He already knew.
“You found it.””
I froze.
“You knew?””
His silence answered.
Again.
Always silence.
Always secrets.
“You knew there was a chance Adrian would contact me.””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing.””
“Because I hoped he wouldn’t.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You hoped?””
Rico stood.
“Clara.””
“No.””
I held up the photograph.
“You don’t get to say my name like you care after hiding my entire life.””
The words hurt him.
I saw it.
But I didn’t care.
Not anymore.
“I need the truth.””
Rico looked at the photograph.
Then slowly walked to the desk.
He opened a drawer.
And pulled out a small wooden box.
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized it.
My mother had one exactly like it.
“What is that?””
“Something Elena left with me.””
My anger disappeared for one second.
“What?””
“She came to me the night before she died.””
The room went silent.
“You saw her?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you save her?””
The question came out sharper than I intended.
Rico accepted it.
Because he deserved it.
“I tried.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t understand.””
He looked at me.
“I watched my mother die believing nobody was coming.””
Rico looked down.
“And I spent twelve years knowing I failed her.””
The honesty silenced me.
He opened the box.
Inside was a letter.
Old.
Folded.
My name written on the front.
I stared.
“She wrote this for you.””
My fingers trembled.
“Why didn’t I get it?””
“Because she told me not to give it to you unless Adrian returned.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because she knew he would come back.””
I opened the letter.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
My mother.
My knees almost gave out.
*Clara,*
*If you are reading this, it means the past found you.*
I stopped.
Rico looked away.
I continued.
*I wanted to give you a normal life. I wanted you to grow up believing the world was kinder than it really was.*
My vision blurred.
*But there are things you need to know.*
I turned the page.
*Ricardo Moretti is not your enemy.*
I looked up.
Rico watched me carefully.
Then I read the next line.
*He is your biological father.*
The room disappeared.
No.
No.
That couldn’t be true.
I looked at Rico.
He didn’t deny it.
That was the worst part.
“You’re lying.””
His face broke slightly.
“I wish I was.””
I stepped backward.
“My father…”
“Adrian raised you.””
“But you—”
“Yes.””
His voice was quiet.
“I’m your father.””
Everything I thought I knew collapsed.
The necklace.
The photograph.
My mother.
The lies.
The years.
All of it.
“Why?””
It was the only word I could say.
Rico looked at the letter.
“Because Adrian couldn’t have children.””
I went still.
“What?””
“He knew Elena was pregnant with my child.””
My hand covered my mouth.
“He knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he raise me?””
Rico’s expression darkened.
“Because he wanted what I had.””
I shook my head.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does if you understand Adrian.””
He stepped closer.
“He didn’t want a daughter.””
My chest tightened.
“He wanted leverage.””
The room became cold.
“He raised you because he knew one day you would matter to me.””
I stared at him.
“You’re saying he kept me as a weapon?””
Rico didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
A knock suddenly interrupted us.
Dante entered.
His face was pale.
“Boss.””
Rico immediately looked up.
“What happened?””
Dante glanced at me.
Then back at him.
“We found Adrian.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
Dante swallowed.
“He’s outside.””
Nobody moved.
Then:
“He’s not alone.””
Rico’s expression changed.
“How many?””
Dante looked toward the window.
“Too many.””
A second later, the mansion security system came alive.
But this time, there was no voice through the speakers.
No message.
No warning.
Only one sound.
A gunshot.
The window behind Rico shattered.
He moved instantly.
He grabbed me and pulled me down.
Glass rained over us.
And as I lay on the floor, protected by the man who had just learned I was his daughter, I heard a voice outside.
A voice I had waited my entire life to hear.
My father.
Adrian Hayes.
“Ricardo!””
Another shot fired.
Then his voice came through the broken window.
“You took everything from me.””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“Now I’m taking your daughter back.””
