Chapter 12: The Truth That Destroyed Us All
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not Rico.
Not Adrian.
Not Celeste.
Not even me.
Because the man standing behind Dante was not a stranger.
He was family.
My mother’s brother.
My uncle.
The man whose face had appeared in old photographs beside Elena.
The man who had smiled beside my childhood memories.
But now he was holding a gun.
“Let him go,” Rico said.
My uncle smiled.
“I was wondering how long it would take before you recognized me.””
His name was Thomas Hayes.
I knew that now.
Another name.
Another person.
Another lie.
Dante remained still.
His jaw clenched.
“Clara.””
I looked at him.
His eyes were apologetic.
He had tried.
He had failed.
And now everyone was paying for it.
“Leo,” I whispered.
My eyes moved upstairs.
My uncle smiled.
“Your concern is touching.””
Rico stepped forward.
“Where is the boy?””
Thomas tilted his head.
“You still care about other people.””
The insult was obvious.
Rico’s expression hardened.
“Where is Leo?””
Thomas laughed.
“Safe.””
Nobody believed him.
Not one person.
Because men like him didn’t use the word safe.
They used it when they meant control.
I looked at my uncle.
“Why?””
He looked at me.
And for a second, I saw something familiar.
Not kindness.
Pain.
“You have your mother’s eyes.””
The sentence was almost gentle.
Almost.
Then it disappeared.
“And that is exactly why this is difficult.””
I felt sick.
“Difficult?””
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“I don’t.””
I stepped forward.
“You all keep saying that.””
Thomas watched me.
“You think I wanted any of this?””
I laughed.
“Did you want my mother dead?””
The room froze.
Thomas looked away.
That was enough.
My heart sank.
“You did.””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
“I didn’t kill Elena.””
Everyone stared.
“Then who did?””
Silence.
Thomas looked at Rico.
And said:
“You did.””
The room exploded.
“What?”” Adrian shouted.
Rico didn’t move.
But I saw the pain.
The old wound.
The one he had carried for years.
Thomas continued.
“You think Victor was the villain?””
He laughed.
“You think Adrian was the monster?””
He looked at me.
“Your father was manipulated.””
Then at Rico.
“But you?””
He shook his head.
“You were the one Elena feared would become exactly like your father.””
My stomach dropped.
I looked at Rico.
“No.””
He looked at me.
And I hated that I couldn’t immediately know.
Because that doubt had been planted.
Thomas saw it.
“You want the truth?””
Rico’s voice was low.
“Don’t.””
But Thomas continued.
“The night Elena died, she confronted Ricardo.””
I stared.
“About what?””
Thomas smiled.
“About the evidence.””
The room went silent.
“She wanted to expose Victor.””
A pause.
“But Ricardo wanted to handle it his way.””
My breathing became shallow.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas looked at me.
“It means your father was angry.””
Rico’s voice broke through.
“I never hurt her.””
Thomas looked at him.
“Didn’t you?””
Rico froze.
A terrible silence followed.
I looked at him.
And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Guilt.
“Ricardo?””
He closed his eyes.
“I was angry.””
My heart sank.
“Why?””
“Because she was going to leave.””
The honesty hurt.
“She was taking you away.””
He looked at me.
“I thought I was losing my family.””
Nobody spoke.
Then:
“What happened?””
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“I went to find her.””
My hands went cold.
“And?””
“I argued with her.””
“Did you hurt her?””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“I swear to you, Clara.””
His eyes filled.
“I never touched her.””
Thomas laughed.
“Convenient.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Thomas looked at him.
“You don’t get to defend him.””
Adrian’s face changed.
Because he knew something.
Something he hadn’t said.
“What?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“I saw Ricardo leave.””
The words hit like a punch.
My entire body went cold.
“You saw?””
Adrian nodded slowly.
“That night.””
Rico looked at him.
“You never told me.””
“I thought Elena was alive.””
Silence.
The world narrowed.
Too many truths.
Too many versions.
Then Maria spoke.
Quietly.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
She was crying.
“No.””
She looked at Thomas.
“You weren’t there.””
Thomas’s face changed.
Maria stepped forward.
“I was.””
My heart raced.
“What?””
Maria looked at me.
“I saw what happened.””
The room froze.
“Then tell me.””
Her lips trembled.
“Your mother was alive after Ricardo left.””
I looked at Rico.
Then Maria.
“She called someone.””
“Who?””
Maria closed her eyes.
And whispered:
“Thomas.””
My uncle’s expression changed.
For the first time all night…
He looked afraid.
Maria continued.
“She begged him to help her.””
A tear fell down her cheek.
“And he came.””
Everyone stared at Thomas.
Maria’s voice broke.
“He didn’t save her.””
The silence was unbearable.
“He finished what someone else started.””
Thomas’s grip on Dante tightened.
“No.””
Maria looked at him.
“Yes.””
Rico stepped forward.
His voice was deadly calm.
“You killed Elena.””
Thomas shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
Rico’s eyes turned cold.
“You’re right.””
He looked at me.
“I understand now.””
A sudden sound interrupted.
A small voice.
“Clara?””
Everyone turned.
Leo stood at the top of the stairs.
Alive.
Confused.
And behind him…
Another person stood.
A person nobody expected.
Because she was supposed to be dead.
Maria screamed.
Rico froze.
Adrian stopped breathing.
And I stared at the woman standing behind Leo.
The woman with tears in her eyes.
The woman whose face I had seen in every memory.
The woman I had buried twelve years ago.
May you like
My mother.
Elena Hayes.
